Cheek Implants

Cheek implants surgery, also known as cheek augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure used to alter, change or enhance a person’s cheeks in order to emphasize them, effectively changing the individual’s facial proportions.

Cheek augmentation or cheek implants techniques include:
● Cheek implants – the surgeon will use solid silicone implants to enhance the patient’s face
● Dermal fillers, also known as cheek fillers – the surgeon can use dermal fillers, a material based on hyaluronic acid, to gradually enhance and augment the patient’s cheeks
● Autologous fat transfer for cheek augmentation – surgeons can inject the patient’s own fat into the cheeks
● Cheek augmentation through osteotomy – surgeons can alter the zygomatic bone, commonly known as the cheekbone in order to achieve the desired effect

There are three different types of cheek implants:
● Malar – This is the most common type of implant used. It’s placed directly on the cheekbone and provides the patient with a more pleasing contour in the area.
● Submalar – Submalar cheek implants are usually used to enhance the midface
● Combined – These implants can enhance the cheekbones as well as the midface

Cheek implants surgery can be combined with a face lift procedure, neck lift, rhinoplasty but the most common choice is chin implant surgery.

Cheek Implants Candidates

Cheek implants surgery, also known as cheek augmentation is recommended for any individuals dissatisfied with the look or shape of their cheeks. Patients with flat cheeks usually opt for this surgery. Individuals who suffered traumatic injury or birth defects can also opt for this type of surgery.

Am I Suitable for Cheek Implants?

Cheek augmentation is not recommended for patients with an unusually round face. Patients with very little soft tissue in the cheeks area should not have this procedure, as the implants may become noticeable. Individuals suffering from any type of infection in the body, especially in or around the mouth and sinus should wait before going in for cheek implants surgery. Certain patients with serious underlying health conditions such as diabetes or heart problems may not be good candidates for cheek augmentation surgery.

Preparing for Cheek Implants

Patients need to avoid blood thinners, oral supplements, alcohol and smoking for at least 2 weeks before the cheek implants surgery.

How is Cheek Implants Performed?

Cheek implants surgery is done under sedation or general anaesthesia. Once the anaesthesia kicks in or the patient is sedated, the surgeon creates the incision needed for the implants. If the procedure is combined with eyelid lift surgery, brow lift, face lift or rhinoplasty, the implants can be inserted through the incisions made for these procedures.

If the cheek implants procedure is done alone, incisions can be created either through the lower eyelids or in the mouth. The surgeon will then create pockets in the cheek tissue and proceed to place the implants. Once the desired result is achieved, stitches are placed to close the incision site.

Dermal fillers can be used instead of implants. The dermal fillers allow the surgeon to gradually enhance the cheek area until the desired result is achieved. It’s important to note that dermal fillers are not a permanent solution and another intervention will be necessary in around 6 to 12 months.
