Cheek implants surgery, also known as cheek augmentation, is a plastic surgery procedure used to make fuller, change or enhance a person’s cheeks to provide harmony in the facial proportions.

Cheek augmentation or cheek implants techniques include:

● Cheek implants – the plastic surgeon uses solid silicone implants in this procedure to enhance the patient’s face

● Dermal fillers, also known as cheek fillers – the surgeon can also use dermal fillers, a material based on hyaluronic acid, to gradually improve the appearance of the patient’s cheeks

● Autologous fat transfer for cheek augmentation – in this particular procedure, surgeons can inject the patient's fat into the cheeks

● Cheek augmentation through osteotomy – surgeons can change the zygomatic bone of the cheek, commonly known as the cheekbone to achieve the desired effect.

There are three different types of cheek implants:

● Malar – This is the most common type of cheek implant used in this field. These implants are placed directly on the cheekbone and provide a more pleasing contour in the cheek area.

● Submalar – Submalar cheek implants are usually used to enhance the appearance of the midface.

● Combined – As the name suggests, these implants can enhance the cheekbones as well as the midface.

Cheek implant surgery is a safe procedure and can be combined with a facelift procedure, neck lift, and rhinoplasty but the most common choice is chin implant surgery. Cheek implant surgery is also an increasingly popular surgical procedure, and abroad options are often preferred considering the price advantage. For example, in countries well-experienced in the field of medical tourism such as Turkey, patients can find more affordable check implant surgery options compared to the US or most European countries.

Cheek implant surgery, also known as cheek augmentation, is recommended for any individuals dissatisfied with the look or shape of their cheeks. Individuals with flat cheeks, traumatic facial injuries, or birth defects usually prefer this surgery.

Cheek augmentation is not recommended for patients with unusual round faces. Patients with very little soft tissue in the cheek should not have this procedure, as implants may become apparent. Persons suffering from any type of infection in the body, especially in the mouth and sinus, should wait before undergoing cheek implant surgery. Certain patients with serious underlying health conditions such as diabetes or heart problems may not be good candidates for cheek augmentation surgery.

How many trips do I need to take abroad to complete the procedure?

You will need 1 trip abroad to complete the whole procedure and follow up with your local doctor.

Hospital stay: Overnight stay is not required

Duration: 45 to 90 minutes

Recovery time: 3 to 5 days

Patients need to avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, oral herbal supplements, alcohol, and smoking for at least 2 weeks before the cheek implant surgery. Patients may be advised to take a particular medication or change the dose of an existing medication while preparing for the surgery.

Cheek implant surgery is done under sedation or general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia applies, the cheek implant surgeon creates the incision to insert the implants. If the procedure is combined with eyelid lift surgery, brow lift, facelift, or rhinoplasty, the implants can also be inserted through the incisions already made for these procedures.

If the cheek implant procedure is performed stand-alone, incisions can be created either through the lower eyelids or in the mouth, according to the surgeon’s decision. The surgeon will then create “pockets” in the cheek tissue and proceed to place the implants carefully. Once the desired position is achieved, stitches are set to close the incision site.

As an alternative treatment, dermal fillers can be used instead of implants. The dermal fillers allow the surgeon to gradually enhance the cheek area until the desired result is achieved. It’s important to note that dermal fillers are not a permanent solution and another intervention will be necessary in around 6 to 12 months after the initial surgery.

The cheek implants recovery period lasts around 3 weeks. Most patients return to work in around a week after the procedure. A facial compression garment will be advised and provided to patients in order to speed up the healing process, it needs to be worn for 3 days after the cheek implant surgery.

Cheek implants surgery risks and complications can include:

● Cheek implants surgery revision

● Implant displacement

● Allergic reaction to anesthesia

● Asymmetry of the cheeks

● Infection

● Scarring

●Hematoma

●Fatty cysts

Risks and complications for cheek augmentation with dermal fillers are different than those of cheek implant surgery.

Cheek implants surgery side effects can include:

● Swelling

● Bruising

●Facial edema

● Sore cheeks

● Pain

Cheeks implant surgery reviews set the average success rate at 92%. The success rate for dermal fillers is almost the same at 89%, but this one is not a permanent solution.

With either technique, patients will enjoy fuller cheeks and more appealing facial proportions. If it is necessary to answer the question of “Can cheek implants be removed?”, the answer is yes: If you will not feel good with your cheek implants anymore, you can have another surgery to be removed them.
