FUT Hair Implant Recovery Time

It takes approximately ten days to 14 days to recover after the procedure. You should avoid strenuous activity for at least four weeks. You will start to notice new hair growth after three months.

Expect to experience complete recovery 12 – 15 months after the procedure. You can return to work three days after the procedure; you will notice the swelling reduces during these days.

Avoid brushing your hair for at least three weeks, and don't wash your hair for the first three days. Follow your doctor's instructions to speed up your recovery.

How is FUT Hair Surgery Performed?

Your surgeon will administer the local anesthesia. Then your surgeon will remove a strip of hair from the donor area.

The donor area where a strip of hair was extracted is then sutured. This process usually leaves a linear scar on your head. But, the scar won't be visible because it is hidden underneath the hair.

The extracted donor strip will then be cut into individual follicular units using a microscopic dissection. Your surgeon will then create incisions –or canal openings – on the recipient area where the follicular graft units will be implemented.

After the transplant, your surgeon gently applies a disinfection solution to the scalp. And the donor area will be dressed using bandages.

Here is a step-by-step guide to the procedure:

Consultation:

  • Assessment: A detailed assessment to determine the donor and recipient areas.

Preparation:

  • Anesthesia: Applying local anesthesia to the donor area to minimize discomfort.

Extraction:

  • Strip Removal: A strip of scalp with hair is surgically removed from the donor area (usually the back of the head).
  • Suture: The incision is then sutured closed, leaving a linear scar.

Follicular Unit Preparation:

  • Dissection: The removed strip is dissected under a microscope to obtain individual follicular units.

Recipient Site Preparation:

  • Incisions: Creating incisions in the recipient area where the follicular units will be transplanted.

Implantation:

  • Transplanting Units: The individual follicular units are then implanted into the prepared incisions in the recipient area.

Closure:

  • Healing: The recipient and donor areas are allowed to heal.

Post-operative Care:

  • Guidelines: Following the surgeon's guidelines to foster proper healing and successful results.

Recovery:

  • Downtime: Recovery time might be slightly longer than FUE due to the surgical excision involved.

Results:

  • Initial Growth: Initial hair growth can be noticed in 3-4 months.
  • Full Results: Full results become apparent in about 12-18 months.

Note:

  • Scarring: There will be a linear scar in the donor area, which can be concealed with appropriate hair length.

It is a widely used technique aiming for a natural-looking result. Consulting with a healthcare provider for personalized medical advice is always recommended.
