How Does it Work?

Also known as a boob job or augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation is an effective surgical procedure that enhances female breast size and shape. It is one of the most performed plastic surgery procedures in the whole world. When performing this procedure, surgeons normally use two types of implants: silicone and saline. The former is the most preferred type of implant because it guarantees more natural results.

What Does a Breast Augmentation with Implants Involve?

The breast augmentation with implants surgery takes 2 hours to complete and it is regularly performed as an outpatient procedure. If you decide to have this surgery, we will make sure that you have a pleasant trip and on the other hand, the surgeons will make it a point that they customize the surgery so as to match your needs, preferences as well as the clinics’ practices.

Here are some of the stages you should expect to go through if you decide to go through this procedure:

1.     Taking the Anesthesia

This surgery is usually performed while the patient is under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. This is done so that the patient doesn’t feel any sort of pain or discomfort during the procedure.

2.     Making the incision

Incisions are made soon after the anesthesia kicks in. Surgeons typically use one of the following techniques to make incisions:

  • Periareolar Incision: This technique involves making an incision along the bottom edge of your areola.
  • Inframammary Incision: When using this technique, surgeons will make incisions just under the breast along the bottom fold.
  • Transaxillary Incision: This technique implies that the incision will be made at the bottom of your underarm.
  • Tuba Incision: Surgeons rarely use tuba incisions because it complicated. This technique involves making the incision from the belly button.

3.     Inserting the Implants

Once the incisions are made, your surgeon will have to start inserting implants. This process can be done using any of the 2 techniques:

  • Subglandular placement: This technique allows your surgeon to insert the implants behind the breast tissue and in front of the pectoral muscle.
  • Subpectoral placement: When using this technique, the implant is placed in a pocket under the pectoral muscle.

The type of technique used to insert implants will depend on your body type, implant type as well as the size of the implant.

4.     Closing the incisions

When the implants have been inserted, the incisions will either be stitched or closed using skin adhesives or surgical tapes –this normally depends on the site of the incision. Once the incisions are closed, you will be dressed up with bandages. Suppose your surgeon close the incisions using dissolvable stitches, you can expect them to vanish between the 6th and 8th week, but if your surgeon uses sutures that are not absorbable, they will have to be removed after 7 days.

Breast Implant Shapes

There are 2 different types of breast implant shapes.

  • Round breast implants: Round implants are the most preferred ones. As the name suggests, round breast implants will make your breasts to look more rounder and fuller. But the downside of this implant shape is that it appears less natural.
  • Teardrop breast implants: Unlike the round breast implants, the teardrop shaped implants are sloped in contour and they look more natural.

What Should I Expect from Breast Implants?

  • When you woke up after anesthesia, you will probably feel uncomfortable and painful. This is one of the reasons why we recommend that you bring a companion to take you home.
  • Your surgeon will advise you on the sleeping position.
  • If yours is not a job that involves a lot of physical activities, you can return to work after one week.
  • During the healing process, you should wear a support bra to support the breasts and also to minimize swelling.
  • You should make sure that you use the medication prescribed to you by your surgeon so that you avoid post-op pain and infections.
  • You should avoid straining yourself and you are advised to keep your daily activities on a very light level.
  • Acute pain can be felt for a few days after the surgery, but it’s nothing that can’t be handled by the prescribed meds.
  • Your surgeon may allow you to take a shower 24 hours after the surgery, but you should avoid being in a bathtub or swimming pools in the first 2 weeks after the surgery.

Things You Should Do Before Breast Augmentation Surgery

  • A week before the procedure, you should stop taking Aspirins and any other meds associated with blood thinning.
  • If you are allergic to any drugs, you should inform your surgeon as soon as possible.
  • Patients advised to avoid smoking 24 hours before the surgery.
  • Consuming any alcoholic beverages can affect anesthesia. So you should not take in anything alcoholic 24 hours prior surgery.
  • If you are taking meds for chronic or acute diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, you should inform your surgeon before the surgery commences.

FAQ

Is Breast Augmentation Painful?

You may feel pain or soreness after the procedure is done. However, your surgeon may prescribe painkillers to relieve this pain and discomfort.

Does Breast Augmentation Leave a Scar?

Most breast augmentation scars will appear red or pink and mostly hidden under the bikini line and they become less noticeable over time.

What Are the Main Differences Between Fat Transfer and Breast Implants?

Breast implants do not require additional surgery in other parts of the body as in the fat graft procedure. The cost of breast augmentation surgery with implants is much lower than that of fat grafting. Finally, the implants can be easily removed, but it is more difficult to remove the fat after injection. The advantage of fat transfer is to get rid of the stubborn excess fat accumulated in certain parts of the patients' body.
