What is a CT scan (or CAT scan)?
CT scan is a popular technique used to detect injuries and diseases. CT stands for Computed Tomography and is comprised of numerous X-ray photographs compiled together in order to give a detailed picture of one’s body or body part. While it is not recommended for perfectly healthy patients who just want to know if there are any undiscovered health problems in their bodies, it is one of the primary ways of looking for tumours and injuries once they are suspected to exist. Usually, the CT scan with contrast is performed to recognize better the anomalies. The most popular types of this procedure:
• Abdominal CT scan
• Heart CT scan
• CT scan of brain
Primary candidates for CT imaging are people who suffered injuries from accidents. Other groups which benefit from CT scan procedure are suspected cancer patients, whose doctors do not know where the tumour has formed.
CT scan procedure is a relatively safe one and doses of radiation to which patient is exposed are very low. However, women are asked to inform specialists conducting the CAT scan whether they are pregnant – radiation may have a damaging influence on foetus.
Informing about allergies (usually the CT scan with contrast is performed – a dye may cause allergy) and other medical conditions is a priority before your CT imaging. You will be asked to fast for some hours before CT scan procedure since a dye will be used to make the quality of CT better. Finally, you will be asked to remove metal objects such as jewellery before entering the CT scanner. You may be asked to wear a gown instead of your normal clothes.
CT scan is a very short medical procedure. You will be asked to lie on a CT scanner’s examination table and have dye given as a pill or injected (unless you are allergic to it). Patients who have anxiety or cannot stay still, including younger children, will have a sedative applied. Then you will be asked to hold still while the CT imaging proceeds. Then you are free to go home.
The length of a CT procedure depends on the size of the area being scanned, but it usually lasts only a few minutes to half an hour.
Overnight stay is not required
There is no recovery required for CT scan procedure. You are free to go and enjoy your daily activities, be it work, sport or a quality free time.
CT scan machine includes a low dose of radiation but it was not proven that it may cause any complications related to it. Only pregnant women are discouraged from having CT imaging done. Some people may have an allergy to the dye used in CAT scan but this is usually ruled out before the procedure.
There are no known side effects of CT scan. CT imaging is thought to be a perfectly safe procedure.
CT scan procedure is very helpful in finding tumours as well as injuries caused by accidents. For this reason, it remains a very popular and widely used procedure.
CT scan helps many patients to find out where their health problems lie and to start an effective therapy.
