Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), also known as the 'strip method', is a traditional and popular hair restoration technique. It imitates the pattern of natural hair growth and is a good choice for people who have large bald areas on their head. This procedure basically involves extracting an entire strip of hair from a donor area where hair loss is less and hair growth is still thick. The area from where the strip is taken is sutured leaving a linear scar on the scalp in the FUT hair transplant technique. As this procedure is invasive, it requires a longer recovery period than FUE hair transplant. Different from the FUE technique, a large number of follicles can be transplanted in a single session of FUT hair transplant procedure.

How Does it Work?

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a hair transplantation technique. This technique only differs with the FUE method in how the hair follicles are extracted from the donor area. When using the FUT technique, your surgeon will remove a strip of hair from the back of your head (the donor area).

Besides being regarded as a traditional hair transplantation technique, the FUT method is still effective and surgeons prefer it because it guarantees satisfactory results.

For your online consultation, we will kindly ask you to send your photos as shown in the Photography Guide down below, so we can evaluate your case.

What Does an FUT Hair Transplant Surgery Involve?

Just like any other surgery, the procedure is tailored to meet your individual needs, preferences and the clinics’ practices. To give you a clear picture of how everything pans out, here is a brief guideline below:

Consultation for FUT Hair Transplant

First things first, an online consultation (between you and FUE Hair Transplant specialist) will be conducted –this is done in order to make sure that you’re a suitable candidate for the beard transplant surgery. You will be asked to send some pictures of your face and head (from the top, front, left, right, and back angles). After a Hair Transplant specialists reviews your pictures, you will be told the approximate number of grafts that you need. During the online consultations, expect the following questions:

  • Have you ever had a beard transplant before?
  • Do you have any medical conditions that we should be aware of?
  • Are you currently taking any medication?
  •  Is your hair loss hereditary?
  • When did you start losing hair?

It is during this consultation that your surgeon will learn about motivation, expectations, and goals –in regards to the surgery.

What happens during the Surgery

  • Your surgeon will begin by giving you local anaesthesia.
  • When the local anesthesia comes into effect, your surgeon will remove a strip of hair from the donor area.
  • The donor area where a strip of hair was extracted is then sutured. This process usually leaves a linear scar on your head: but, the scar can be easily hidden underneath the remaining hair.
  • The extracted donor strip will be then cut into individual follicular units using a microscopic dissection.
  • Your surgeon will then create incisions –medically known as canal opening – on the recipient area where the follicular graft units will be inserted.
  • After the transplant is done, your surgeon will gently apply a disinfection solution on the scalp. And the donor area will be dressed using bandages.

A day after the surgery you will have to go back to the clinic for a review. It is during this meeting with your surgeon that he/she will give you instructions that will help you make the recovery period swift and flawless. Some of these instructions include the following:

  • You shouldn’t touch or wash the treated area on the first night.
  • To avoid damaging the transplanted hair grafts, you should use pillows to elevate your head when sleeping.
  • You should avoid partaking in every physical activities until the 5th day.
  • In the first few weeks you should avoid sunburn as it can affect the pigmentation of the skin and damages the transplanted hair.

What should I expect after the surgery?

  • For the first couple of days, you can have scabs in the recipient area, and you might as well notice facial swelling while the donor and recipient areas are crusting. You don’t have to panic as this is very natural during the recovery period.
  • After 10 or 14 days, the stitches from the donor area of your scalp should be removed. The donor area heals to form a linear scar.
  • Expect some of the transplanted hair to begin to fall off in the period between 14 days and 2 months. You shouldn’t be alarmed, as this is something that is normal.
  • From the 4th to the 10th month, expect to see your new hair to start growing.
  • Typically, new hair continues will begin to thicken in the period between month number 10 and 15 after the FUT hair transplant surgery.
  • If you follow the guidelines given to you by your surgeon, your recovery period will be smooth, and your results will more likely be favourably.
  • Instead of going for the FUT technique, you can opt for the FUE technique; which is a newer and more advanced method that minimizes scars in the back of the head.

Things You Should Avoid Before Surgery

  • A week before the procedure, you should stop taking Aspirins and any other meds associated with blood thinning.
  • If you are allergic to any drugs, you should inform your surgeon as soon as possible.
  • Patients advised to avoid smoking 24 hours before the surgery.
  • Consuming any alcoholic beverages can affect anesthesia. So you should not take in anything alcoholic 24 hours prior surgery.
  • If you are taking meds for chronic or acute diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, you should inform your surgeon before the surgery commences.

Is FUT Hair Transplant Painful?

FUT hair transplant procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so the patients do not feel anything during the procedure. If they experience any pain or soreness after the procedure, they can use prescribed painkillers to relieve their pain and discomfort.

Does FUT Hair Transplant Leave a Scar?

FUT procedure requires a surgical removal of a strip of scalp that contains hair from the donor area which leads to a linear scar on -especially- back of the head.

What's the Difference Between FUT and FUE?

The main difference between FUT and FUE hair transplant techniques is that in the FUT technique, the surgeon extracts a donor skin strip from which the surgeon will remove the follicular units to be transferred to the recipient area, whereas in FUE the follicular units are removed individually and directly from the scalp.
