What Our Patients Say
Gingival flap surgery is recommended for patients suffering from periodontal disease.
Not Recommended For Gingival Flap Surgery
Gingival flap surgery is not recommended for patients who have infected tooth or infected tooth roots. Also, patients with broken or fractured teeth should first resolve these issues before opting for this procedure. Any mobile teeth will have to be removed before undergoing a gingival flap surgery.
Overview
What is Gingival Flap Surgery? Gingival flap surgery, also known as periodontal flap surgery or period flap surgery for short, is a procedure in which the dentist separates the patient's gums from the teeth and fold them back for the duration of the procedure. This action will allow the dentist much-needed access to the root of the patient's teeth and the surrounding bone tissue. Gingival flap surgery, as opposed to other types of gum surgery, is mainly performed due to health concerns, whereas a gingivoplasty will be performed due to aesthetic reasons. The procedure itself can be coupled with other types of gum surgery, including:
Regardless if it is employed as a single operation or in conjunction with other procedures, gingival flap surgery is performed as a means to treat periodontal disease – the procedure allows the dentist to clear and clean any infectious pockets under the patient’s gum tissue.
Preparation
The patient will need to have a set of dental x-rays done in order to have his teeth and gum tissue assessed by the dentist.
How It Is Performed
This surgery can be performed under local or partial anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure. The dentist will begin by administering local anesthetic in the affected region. The patient's gum tissue will then be separated from the teeth and the teeth roots. Once this part of the procedure is done, the dentist will remove all bacteria, tartar, and plaque from the area – these are commonly referred to as a "periodontal pocket". The periodontal pocket is an accumulation of bacteria under the patient's gums. Before closing any incisions, the dentist will carefully smooth the tooth’s roots in order to prevent further build-up.
Recovery
Patients may feel moderate pain and discomfort after undergoing the procedure. The periodontist will prescribe painkillers for the recovery period. It’s important to maintain excellent oral hygiene after undergoing this procedure. The recovery period may last up to two weeks, and some patients may experience swelling during this time.

Does gingival flap surgery hurt?
The procedure itself is not painful, but patients will experience mild discomfort for up to a week after undergoing it.
When can I resume sports?

The bleeding should stop in the first 48 hours. If you experience bleeding after the first few days, contact your doctor.

Made my trip overseas so much easier!
Yasmin was extremely helpful, friendly and made planning my trip so much easier. I don't know what I would have done without her! She told me how to get a travel visa and luckily warned me of any travel restrictions that were going on! I had to rebook my trip twice due to covid & restrictions and Yasmin handled everything on the hospitals end. One of the times I had to rebook it was because my layover was in london and Turkey banned all incoming travel from the UK. The airline never notified me so if it wasn't for Yasmin warning me I would have gotten on the plane and been stuck in london! Going overseas to a country you've never been to before to get plastic surgery can be scary, having Yasmin made it a lot less scary knowing you have somebody there that's on your team to help you.

Long waiting times in UK…
Because of long waiting times in UK hospitals due to Covid19, I hit upon the idea of having my bilateral hernia surgery done while on a 2-week holiday in Antalya. After making inquiries through Yasmin, I had a short but comprehensive consultation with an eminent surgeon Prof Alihan Gürkan and my operation was scheduled for a day halfway through my stay in Antalya. It went well with keyhole surgery, I stayed in overnight and was discharged the next day, which gave me 6 days to recover before my flight home to Scotland. Yasmin kept in touch throughout, making sure I had transport to and from the hospital, and a special thanks to Fatma, my mentor and guide at the Memorial Hospital on my day of tests and examinations. I telephoned my surgeon a few days after the operation for advice on removing my plasters and he was most helpful and reassuring about my complete recovery. I was not too fond of the breakfast, but considered it as another form of medicine! My flight home was amazingly comfortable without painkillers, although they were definitely needed for a few days after my operation. In conclusion, I would be happy to have other treatment like this, though in a nice sort of way I hope never to set eyes on the Memorial Hospital again. 🙂
A very positive outcome
A very positive outcome, following my decision to pursue in having dental cosmetic surgery/treatment carried out in Turkey. Excellent advisory skills by Flymedi rep Abud. He was professional, well informed, and followed me up with total attention throughout the whole process. Last but not least, I thank Dr Ahmed Kumsan and his team at Infinity Smiles Dental Clinic for their commitment and professionalism. Highly recommended.
Thank you Flymedi
I was considering several different options, however Abud was by far the most committed and helpful of all the agents I'd been in discussions with. Everything was organised for me and I was guided throughout and if I was feeling apprehensive about anything or had any questions Abud was always on hand to answer my questions and give reassurances. I'm so happy with the results of my operation and I was left overwhelmed by how friendly and supportive everyone was throughout. If you're considering using flymedi then I can honestly say you'll be delighted with the service both before during and after your surgery.
