Positron Emission Tomography is a neurological imaging system also known as PET - it is used for medical and research purposes. Neurologists are using pet imaging to examine the human brain in detail and to begin the diagnosis process. A PET scan allows the specialists to detect metastases and tumors or identify potential issues in the nervous system.

PET Scan Candidates

PET scan is recommended for cases of clinical suspicion, prevention, early diagnosis of neoplastic diseases, identifying and localizing tumours, detecting metastases, measuring the effectiveness of a treatment, to designate the exact location for radiotherapy and many other uses like cardiology, infectious diseases, etc.

Am I Suitable for PET Scan?

PET scan procedure is not painful and doesn’t involve any other inconvenient. The examiner will inform the patient about any associated risks and benefits of Positron Emission Tomography. Even though the radiations are low and it is a non-invasive process, this procedure is not recommended for pregnant patients or women who are breastfeeding.

Preparing for PET Scan

Preparation is very important in a PET scan procedure. It is recommended to wear warm, confortable clothing and avoid metal jewelry and accessories. The day before having a Positron Emission Tomography, the patient should properly hydrate and limit the caffeine and sugar consumption. Six hours before the examination the patient should not eat anything and drink a lot of water.
Diabetic patients should ask their doctor for specific instructions. Another important aspect of the preparation is the PET scan procedure cost. The patients should know the costs before starting the procedure.

How is PET Scan Performed?

Physicians perform PET scanning by injecting a small amount of radioactive material usually into blood circulation. After the injection, the patient will rest for an hour, waiting for the substance to dissolve in the organism. Patients will be asked to empty their bladder and lie down on the scanner bed before the process begins. Depending on the type of PET scan machine and the type of scan performed, the process will last between 15 to 35 minutes and it is important to lay still the whole time of the examination.
