Who Can Have Gastric Surgery?
You're an ideal candidate to have Gastric Surgery if you're:

How Does Gastric Surgery Work?
Gastric surgery is an invasive surgery that aims to reduce stomach size, which reduces the amount of food you can take. The procedure is also known as stomach reduction surgery.
Types of Gastric Surgeries:
- Gastric Bypass: the surgeon will divide the stomach into a small upper pouch and a larger lower pouch.
- Gastric Sleeve: the surgeon will create a small stomach "sleeve" using a stapling device, and the rest of the stomach is permanently removed.
- Gastric Band: The surgeon places the band around the upper portion of the stomach and attaches a tube to the band. The tube is accessible through a port under the skin of the abdomen. The surgeon injects a saline solution into the band to inflate it using this port.
- Gastric Balloon: the surgeon will place a medical silicone balloon endoscopically into the stomach. The balloon is filled with a saline solution to reduce the amount of food you can take.
- Gastrectomy: Gastrectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the stomach. Gastrectomy surgery is most often performed to treat benign stomach ulcers, bleeding, inflammation, blockages, or tumors.
What Does Gastric Surgery Involve?

1. Administrating the anesthesia
your surgeon will administrate general anesthesia with a sedative.
2. Procedure
Most Gastric Surgeries are performed laparoscopically; the surgeon will insert instruments through multiple small incisions in the abdomen.
Once the general anesthesia is applied, your surgeon will make incisions and then cut across the top of the stomach. After dividing the top of the stomach from the rest of the stomach, the bottom end of the divided small intestine is brought up and connected to the newly created small stomach pouch.
This pouch will be a walnut-size, and it can hold a small amount of food.
3. Post-Op Instructions
You can start low-intensity activities immediately after the surgery as part of your recovery process. It helps to prevent pneumonia, blood clots, and constipation. Also, it increases weight loss.
Your surgeon will prescribe medication to manage the pain. You will need to do post-procedure medical tests to monitor your recovery as planned.
Follow your doctor's aftercare instructions to speed up your recovery and maintain the surgery results.
What Should I Expect After Gastric Surgery Treatment?
- You will be on a strict only fluids diet for the first few days. You're allowed to consume water, broth, and plain gelatin.
- Gradually you will be allowed to consume soft foods and other fluids such as fat-free or low-fat milk. Then move to soft food, like mashed foods and puree.
- After eight weeks, you can start eating solid foods slowly.
- Three to four months after surgery, you may switch to a regular healthy diet depending on your recovery level, physician guidance, and food tolerance.
Things You Should Consider Before Gastric Surgery
- A week before the procedure, you should stop taking Aspirin and any other medication that causes blood thinning.
- If you are allergic to any drugs, you should inform your surgeon as soon as possible.
- Avoid smoking before the surgery.
- Consuming any alcoholic beverages can affect anesthesia. So it would be best if you did not take in anything alcoholic before surgery.
- Follow your doctor-prescribed medication that adjusts your current medicines.
- The patient should not eat from midnight before the day of the surgery. Most people can resume most normal activities within two days, but they may need to take a week's leave from work.

During my vacation in Bodrum, I developed a large abscess, which was causing a lot of pain. I had a flight back to home the next day and the hotel doctor was not sure if I would be allowed to fly, so I was transferred to this magnificent hospital. I was examined by the doctor right after I arrived the hospital and I was given painkillers. The doctor told me that I could take the flight next day and suggested me to stay in the hospital overnight. He also offered me that I could have the surgery the same day! I said I would like to have the surgery at home. I stayed in the hospital and for the next 18 hours I was given medications. My room was a huge suite with bathroom, balcony and TV. The next day my doctor examined me to make sure that I can have the flight. He provided me medications and a medical report for my doctor at home.
