What is PRK Eye Surgery?

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK surgery) is a laser technique that improves eyesight by reshaping the cornea. PRK technique can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Who Can Have PRK Eye Surgery?

You're an ideal candidate for PRK eye surgery if you're at least 18 years of age, have healthy corneas, and a stable vision. Also, if you don't have an existing eye condition like glaucoma or cataract.

PRK Eye Surgery Treatment Duration

PRK surgery takes 5 - 10 minutes per eye. It doesn't need general anesthesia; your doctor will use eye drops that function as local anesthesia.

PRK Eye Surgery Side Effects & Risks

Potential side effects include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Glare, halos, starbursts, and double vision
  • Overcorrections and under corrections
  • Eye infections
  • Vision loss

PRK Eye Surgery Recovery Time

After the correction, your doctor will place a bandage over your eyes to protect them from light, germs, and dust. Your vision will be blurry for the first week. Your doctor will prescribe you eye drops medication to keep your eyes moist and pain relief medication.

Your vision will improve each day gradually. Expect to experience a full recovery a month after the surgery.

PRK Eye Surgery Success Rate

PRK eye surgery has a success rate of 90%.

How Does PRK Eye Surgery Work?

During a PRK procedure, the top layer of the cornea is gently removed to allow access to the part of the eye that your doctor will reshape with the excimer laser. This removed outer layer will regenerate and repair itself naturally during the recovery process.

What Does PRK Eye Surgery Involve

We will plan and arrange the procedure to suit your personal preferences and match you with the best ophthalmologist available in Turkey. There are a few primary steps involved in this procedure:

Here are the primary stages of the surgery:

  1. Online Consultation

You will have an online consultation with your ophthalmologist. At this stage, our specialist will try to know if you're a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Your health history, allergies, medications you use, your ideas about the process, and your expectations from treatment are the most important data to determine the most appropriate treatment for you at this stage.

2. Eye Drops to numb the eyes

Your doctor will start with local anesthesia in the form of eye drops. Your eyes will be numb, and the effect will last for an hour.

3. Removing the top layer of the cornea.

The top layer of cornea tissue is removed; this takes about 30 seconds. An exact surgical tool, called an excimer laser, is used to fix any irregularities in the deeper corneal tissue layers. It also takes about 30-60 seconds. Then a special bandage similar to a contact lens is put on top of the cornea to help the tissue heal.

What Should I Expect After PRK Eye Surgery?

  • Follow your doctor's aftercare instructions. Rest, avoid strenuous physical activity, and stay away from products that may irritate the eye.
  • Your doctor will prescribe eye drops to prevent infection and aid healing.
  • Wear sunglasses outside—sun exposure can scar the cornea after surgery.
  • Expect to experience short-term blurred vision during the first week. Your ophthalmologist can recommend over-the-counter or prescription eye drops for pain.
  • Schedule follow-ups with your doctor as instructed—it can take up to three months for vision to stabilize completely.

Things You Should Consider Before PRK Eye Surgery

  • Your doctor will review your medical history, test your vision, examine your eyes, and measure your cornea and pupil to determine if this procedure is proper for you.
  • You may not be a good candidate if you're under 21, pregnant, nursing, or have pre-existing conditions, including cornea disease, uncontrolled diabetes, cataracts, dry eye syndrome, or advanced glaucoma.

FAQ

What is the difference between PRK and Lasik eye surgery (PRK Vs. LASIK)?

During the PRK procedure, the top layer of the cornea is gently brushed off to allow access to the part of the eye that your doctor will reshape with the excimer laser. But with LASIK, Your doctor will then lift the flap to manipulate the part of the eye with the excimer laser. The flap is realigned after the LASER treatment is complete.

My experience with the Flymedi team and hospital was excellent. Oubai checked on my wellbeing from Pre to post surgery and even when I had travelled back to the UK. The team did come across as one that was caring about the patients needs and made sure the patient was well look aftered. Any problems were quickly resolved by FlyMedi. They checked on me on every step of the way and were accommodating to my needs. The only downside I suppose was running out of the medication. \r\nLooking back I would recommend the experience to friends, family and colleagues. I would give a 5/5 if it wasn't for the medication running out. The quality of care was always present and the doctors and hospital to me objectively were better than the UK.
