What is Presbyopia Treatment?

Presbyopia is an eye condition in which your eyes can't focus on nearby objects. It is a disorder that happens naturally from aging. Presbyopia occurs when the muscles attached to your lens become flexible.

For your eyes to see near objects, the muscles attached to the lens tighten, and when you focus on seeing far objects, the muscles relax. But as you age, the lens attached to the muscle losses flexibility causing the Presbyopia.

Who Can Have Presbyopia Treatment?

You would be ideal for a Presbyopia treatment lens if you developed Presbyopia due to natural aging. And you don't have an existing eye condition like glaucoma or cataract.

Presbyopia Treatment Duration

There is no cure for Presbyopia, but there are several treatments (surgical and non-surgical) to correct your vision. If you decide to take the Presbyopia surgery approach, your ophthalmologist will suggest LASIK treatment.

LASIK surgery takes 15 minutes per eye. It doesn't need general anesthesia; your doctor will use eye drops that function as local anesthesia.

Presbyopia Treatment Side Effects & Risks

Potential side effects from the presbyopia treatment surgery include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Glare, halos, starbursts, and double vision
  • Overcorrections and under corrections
  • Eye infections
  • Vision loss

Presbyopia Treatment Recovery Time

After the correction, your doctor will place a bandage over your eyes to protect them from light, germs, and dust. Your vision will be blurry for the first week. Your doctor will prescribe you eye drops medication to keep your eyes moist and relieve pain.

Your vision will improve each day gradually. Expect to experience a full recovery a month after the surgery.

Presbyopia Treatment Success Rate

With the LASIK procedure approach, the chances of treating Presbyopia have a success rate of 96%.

Presbyopia Treatment Alternative Treatments

  • Corrective lens
  • Contact lens
  • Non-prescription reading glasses

How Does Presbyopia Treatment Work?

The treatment options include refractive or getting a lens implant. The goal of the treatment is to compensate for the inability of the eye to focus on nearby objects. Your doctor might suggest LASIK treatment to create monovision; this adjustment corrects Presbyopia.

Causes of Presbyopia

When you're young, the muscles attached to your eye lens are elastic and flexible. The muscles adjust themselves to accommodate near and far objects. But with aging, your muscles lose their natural ability to adapt its flexibility.

Most patients tend to develop Presbyopia when they reach the age of 40. But if you feel you might have Presbyopia symptoms earlier, you might suffer from premature Presbyopia, which could be a sign of a medical condition.

You're at a higher risk of premature Presbyopia if you have:

  • anemia
  • cardiovascular disease
  • diabetes
  • hyperopia, or farsightedness, which means you have a greater difficulty seeing objects nearby than objects that are far away
  • Multiple sclerosis. It is a chronic illness that affects your spine and brain
  • myasthenia gravis, which is a neuromuscular disorder that affects your nerves and muscles
  • eye trauma or disease

Also, you might develop premature Presbyopia if you regularly consume certain drugs; you're more likely to develop premature Presbyopia:

  • alcohol
  • antianxiety drugs
  • antidepressants
  • antihistamines
  • antipsychotics
  • antispasmodics
  • diuretics

What Does Presbyopia Treatment Involve?

We will plan and arrange the procedure to suit your personal preferences and match you with the best ophthalmologist available in Turkey. There are a few primary steps involved in this procedure:

Here are the primary stages of the surgery:

  1. Online Consultation

You will have an online consultation with your ophthalmologist. At this stage, our specialist will try to know if you're a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Your health history, allergies, medications you use, your ideas about the process, and your expectations from treatment are critical data to determine the most appropriate treatment for you at this stage.

2. Eye Drops to numb the eyes

Your doctor will start with local anesthesia in the form of eye drops. Your eyes will be numb, and they tend to last for an hour.

3. Creating the flap

A unique tool will be placed on your eye to hold it in an open position. You won't feel any pain or discomfort.

Then your doctor will ask you to focus on the light and keep your eyes steady. Then the doctor will create the fold by using precision instruments. Your vision will be blurred during this process, but it will return to normal when the flap is created.

4. Shaping the cornea

After your doctor has created the flap, they will remove the tissue from the cornea to create a new shape with an excimer laser.

5. Sealing the flap

After the reshaping process of the cornea is done, your doctor will carefully replace the flap, and then the journey to recovery begins.

What Should I Expect After Presbyopia Treatment?

  • Follow your doctor's aftercare instructions. Rest, avoid strenuous physical activity, and stay away from products that may irritate the eye.
  • Your doctor will prescribe eye drops to prevent infection and aid healing.
  • Wear sunglasses outside—sun exposure can scar the cornea after surgery.
  • Expect to experience short-term blurred vision during the first week. Your ophthalmologist can recommend over-the-counter or prescription eye drops for pain.
  • Schedule follow-ups with your doctor as instructed—it can take up to three months for vision to stabilize completely.

Things You Should Consider Before Presbyopia Treatment

  • Your doctor will review your medical history, test your vision, examine your eyes, and measure your cornea and pupil to determine if this procedure is proper for you.
  • You may not be a good candidate if you're under 21, pregnant, nursing, or have pre-existing conditions, including cornea disease, uncontrolled diabetes, cataracts, dry eye syndrome, or advanced glaucoma.
