How Does it Work?

Gastrectomy surgery is most often performed to treat stomach cancer. It can also be used in some cases to treat benign stomach ulcers, bleeding, inflammation, blockages, or tumors.

Risk factors for complications during the procedure

  • Obesity
  • Increasing age
  •  Smoking
  • Poor nutrition status
  • Having a chronic illness such as respiratory disease or heart disease

Surgeons can perform stomach surgery in two ways:

  • Open surgery, the surgeon removes the stomach from an incision in the abdomen.
  • Laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the area. It is less invasive and often leads to faster recovery times and less risk than open surgery.

What Does Gastrectomy Treatment Involve?

1.    Consultation for Gastrectomy

After we receive your information request, the first step will be the online consultation as in every procedure. During this consultation, our specialists will ask you some questions to define your problems well and try to learn your complaints and expectations first. The target of this stage is to make sure whether you are a suitable candidate for gastrectomy procedure or not. Your current health status, allergies, regular or current medications, previous surgeries, and any other medical data you may provide will be very useful to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you at this stage.

2.    Planning Your Trip and Choosing the Clinic

After your candidacy is decided, we will start to make the best treatment plan for you. We prepare a list of the clinics and surgeons meeting with your criteria and share it with you. Once you select one of them, we proceed to the next stage which involves the date determination and detailed adjustments.

3.    Final Consultation with Your Surgeon

When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with the surgeon who will perform your gastrectomy surgery. He or she will ask you some questions to try to understand your expectations and concerns and make you understand what you should expect from your surgery. Everything you need to know about your gastrectomy process will be very well explained and tried to be simulated as much as possible, in order you to feel ready and enlightened.

4.    Medical Examinations

Before the gastrectomy procedure begins, your surgeon will conduct some medical tests to make sure that you are in acceptable health status for the surgery. Every patient is required to undergo medical tests to ensure that nothing will hinder the result of the procedure and if any risk detected, surgeons try to eliminate it first.

5.    Surgery

The surgery is performed while you are under general anesthesia (asleep and pain-free). The surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen and removes all or part of the stomach, depending on the reason for the procedure.

Depending on which part of the stomach has been removed, it may be necessary to reconnect the intestine to the remaining portion of the stomach (partial Gastrectomy) or the esophagus (total Gastrectomy).

Currently, some surgeons perform Gastrectomy using a camera. The surgery, which is called laparoscopy, is done with a few small surgical incisions. The advantages of this surgery are faster recovery, less pain, and only a few small incisions.

Things You Should Consider After Gastrectomy Surgery

The patient may consume any food or drink that does not cause discomfort unless the doctor tells him otherwise. Certain foods may be more difficult to digest after gastric surgery, often the patient has to change his diet because his stomach is smaller and he may be less able to handle certain foods.

Some people experience nutritional deficiencies after gastrectomies. Medical professionals should monitor a person's levels of vitamin B12, iron, folic acid, calcium, vitamin D.

How to Recover Faster After Gastrectomy?

  • Exercise. Getting around works well to avoid problems like blood clots and muscle weakness. Turning your feet, stretching your legs, and moving your toes works well to increase blood circulation and maintain muscle strength.
  • Deep breathing. Lying in bed for long periods can lead to pneumonia. Deep breathing techniques can prevent these kinds of complications. After surgery, a doctor can give a person an inspirometer, which is a device designed to help with deep breathing.
  • Pain control. It is important to communicate pain levels to medical personnel to successfully manage pain, which will help the person return to regular activities more quickly.
  • Avoid certain activities. Limit the amount of bathing and swimming, lifting heavy objects, and driving until a doctor recommends resuming them completely.
