Gynecomastia surgery is a medical procedure meant to correct the excess development of enlarged breast tissues in males –both young and old. This condition of overgrowth of breast tissues occurs due to an imbalance in two hormones, testosterone, and estrogen.
It’s also believed that excess use of medication such as androgens, anabolic steroids, anti-anxiety medications, and stomach medications can also result in the enlargement of breasts.
For your online consultation, we will kindly ask you to send your photos as shown in the Photography Guide down below, so we can evaluate your case.
If you decide to have the Gynecomastia surgery, we will make sure that you have a pleasant trip and on the other hand, the surgeons will make it a point that they customize the surgery so as to match your needs, preferences as well as the clinics’ practices.
Here are 4 of the techniques that are used to perform the surgery.
Intra-areolar: This is the most common technique used when performing Gynecomastia. The incisions made during this technique extend to the bottom of the areola so that surgeons can easily access the excess skin tissue.
Skin resection: This technique is reserved for severe cases –and it does not only involve the removal of excess tissue but the nipple will be transposed as well.
Pull-through: This is a less invasive technique and it takes less time to complete. Your surgeon will make a small incision and will remove the excess tissue via liposuction.
Ultrasonic liposuction: If your gynecomastia is due to excess fat, your surgeon will more likely use the ultrasonic liposuction technique.
With that said, here are the 6 stages you should expect to go through if you decide to go through this procedure.
Your first consultation will be done online, and when you arrive at the clinic you will have a face-to-face consultation with your surgeon. During this session you are expected to inform the surgeon about your medical record, allergies, and if you’re currently taking any medication.
Even after telling your surgeon about your medical record, it’s mandatory that you go through some medical tests. After going through the details of the surgery, your surgeon will then begin to prepare you for the surgery.
When the test results are out and your surgeon is satisfied, you will be then given general anesthesia. In some cases, this procedure can be performed while the patient is under local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Your surgeon will decide what’s best for you.
Once the anesthesia has kicked in, your surgeon will begin the surgery by making incisions. If the procedure is going to be performed using the Liposuction technique, the surgeon will make small incisions. But if any other technique is used, the incisions made will be substantial.
This depends on the technique used. Generally speaking, after incisions have been made, excess fat and glandular tissues from the breasts are removed. After this process, your nipples and areola will be repositioned in a way that brings out the desired results.
When your surgeon is done repositioning your nipples and areola, the next step is to close the incisions using sutures. In some cases, drainage tubes are inserted under the skin so as to drain fluid –this is done so as to minimize the risk of swelling or infection.
After the closing of incisions, the surgeon’s assistants will take you to the next room where you will be monitored. Incisions will be bandaged and you will be helped to wear a compression garment.
After the surgery, you should have someone to drive you home and help you around for the first 2 days after the surgery.
Expect to feel some discomfort in the first three days post-surgery. Fortunately, the pain is not severe as it can be handled by the surgeon’s prescription.
The drain tubes placed just below your breasts will be removed in 7 or 10 days after the procedure.
You are required to take a lot of liquids and add more raw fruits to your diet –this also helps avoid constipation since you won’t be moving around more often.
Besides being harmful to overall health, smoking should also be avoided as it can increase the risk of complications and lengthen the healing process.
Starting some light exercises such as walking as soon as possible helps to reduce swelling and lowers the chance of blood clots.
You should stay away from any job or sport that risks a blow to your chest for at least 4 weeks.
You should have incisions cleaned and inspected daily for signs of infection is recommended by the surgeons.
You should avoid the sun for at least 12 months is important.
You should wear a special compression garment continuously for 6 weeks to minimize post-op bruising and swelling and to maintain a smooth recovery.

You may feel pain or soreness after the procedure is done. However, your surgeon may prescribe painkillers to relieve this pain and discomfort.
Does Gynecomastia Leave a Scar?
Incisions made during surgery leave a scar around the nipple in gynecomastia as in any procedure. If a large reduction is required, the incision and scar will be larger. All gynecomastia scars are permanent, but some scars can be hidden in the natural lines of the breast.
