Breast implants are medical devices placed under the breast tissue or breast muscle to either increase the breast size, reconstruct the breast after a breast cancer trauma, and to correct congenital formal errors. Implants are also used to correct or improve the outcome of a previous surgery.
The FDA approves two common types of breast implants: saline filled (saline solution) and silicone gel filled. Although they both have a silicone outer shell, they vary in size, shell thickness, shell surface texture and shape. These implants can also be used in the breast augmentation (breast enlargement or "boob job") procedures, which ranked first in 2018’s most performed plastic surgeries.
