Breast reduction in Turkey

Breast reduction in Turkey, medically reduction mammaplasty, removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin, reshapes what remains and moves the nipple to sit with the smaller breast. It is sold as a package covering the surgery, the hospital stay, the hotel and transfers. Most people stay 5 to 8 nights, return to desk work at about two weeks and see the final shape between four and six months. This page covers what moves the price, how Turkey compares with the UK and what the NHS actually funds, the techniques and the scars each one leaves, recovery week by week, and who is not a candidate.

Breast reduction in Turkey

Breast reduction in Turkey, also called a boob reduction or reduction mammaplasty, removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin, then reshapes what remains and moves the nipple to sit with the new breast. Most people travelling for it are not chasing a look. They are trying to stop the back, neck and shoulder pain, the grooving from bra straps and the rashes that come with carrying more weight on the chest than the frame was built for.

What breast reduction costs in Turkey

The current package price, and the label saying what it covers, all inclusive package or treatment only, are in the quick facts card at the top of this page. Read that label before you compare anything. A figure covering theatre time alone and a figure covering the hospital stay, the surgery, the hotel, the transfers and your follow-up are not the same number, and almost every confusing quote comparison starts there.

What moves the figure up or down:

  • How much tissue is being removed. A larger reduction takes longer in theatre and is priced accordingly.
  • The technique. A liposuction-only reduction is shorter than a vertical or anchor pattern reduction, and the anchor pattern is the longest of the three.
  • Whether an uplift is combined with it. Reduction usually lifts the breast as a consequence, but a formal mastopexy adds work, scars and cost.
  • The surgeon. Years in the specialty and how many breast reductions they do a year show up in the quote.
  • The hospital. A fully licensed hospital with intensive care on site costs more to run than a day clinic, and breast reduction is a general anaesthetic procedure with a one to three night stay, so this is not a place to economise.
  • What the package contains. Flights are usually excluded. Accommodation, transfers, your surgical bra and an interpreter are usually included.

Ask for the quote in writing with a line for each item before you pay a deposit. A clinic that will not itemise a quote has already answered your question.

Is breast reduction cheaper than it looks?

Two costs are routinely left out of the comparison people make in their heads. The first is flights, for you and for anyone travelling with you, because you will not be lifting your own case for a couple of weeks. The second is time: this is a five to eight night trip and a two to three week absence from anything physical, so unpaid leave belongs in the sum. Neither changes the conclusion for most people, but a quote that ignores them is not the real number.

Turkey compared with the UK

The price difference is real, but it is not the only difference, and the rest is what people discover late. Here is what changes when you have the surgery abroad rather than in a UK private hospital.

TurkeyUK, private
What the quoted figure usually coversSurgery, hospital stay, hotel, airport transfers, surgical bra and a coordinatorSurgery and hospital stay; consultations, garments and some follow-up are often billed separately
Consultation before surgeryUsually online, from photographs, before you flyIn person, often more than once, with the surgeon who operates
Time away from homeRoughly 5 to 8 nights plus flightsOne to three nights, no travel
Follow-upFirst check in Turkey before you fly, then remoteIn person with the surgeon who operated
If a revision is neededTerms depend on the clinic contract, so get them in writing before you payHandled through your surgeon and the hospital under UK rules
Route if something goes wrong at homeYour GP and the NHS treat the complication; the original surgeon is not localYour surgeon and the private hospital are reachable

Scroll sideways for the full table

Neither column is automatically the right answer. If you cannot take five to eight nights, or you know you will want the person who operated to look at you in person at three months, the travel works against you whatever it costs.

Does the NHS cover breast reduction?

Sometimes. Breast reduction is one of the few breast procedures the NHS does fund, because for many people it is treatment for pain rather than a cosmetic choice. It is not routinely available: each integrated care board sets its own criteria, and they typically ask for documented symptoms, a period of trying other measures first, and a body mass index below a stated threshold. Waiting lists are long where funding is granted. Start with your GP rather than assuming either way, because a funded operation at home is worth more than a fast one abroad, and finding out costs you nothing.

Why it costs less in Turkey

The difference is structural, not clinical. Salaries, hospital rents and running costs are lower than in the UK, the exchange rate adds to it, and Turkish clinics operate at volume, which spreads fixed costs across more cases. None of that changes what happens in theatre. What it does change is how carefully you should check what a low price has quietly removed: the grade of hospital, the surgeon's caseload, and how long the follow-up lasts.

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction, known medically as reduction mammaplasty, removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to bring the breasts into proportion with the rest of the body. The remaining tissue is reshaped and the nipple and areola are usually moved upward to sit correctly on the smaller breast. It takes two to three hours under general anaesthetic and normally involves one to three nights in hospital.

It is worth being clear about what it is not. It is not a weight loss operation, and the weight removed is small compared with body weight. It does not treat the causes of back pain unrelated to breast size. And it leaves permanent scars, which is the trade most people accept knowingly in return for the relief.

Breast reduction for medical reasons

For most people who have this surgery, the reason is physical and has been building for years. The usual picture includes:

  • Persistent back, neck and shoulder pain that does not settle with physiotherapy or painkillers.
  • Deep grooving where bra straps cut into the shoulders.
  • Recurrent rashes, irritation or infection in the fold under the breast.
  • Posture changes from carrying weight forward on the chest.
  • Difficulty exercising, and the knock-on effects of that on general health.
  • Difficulty finding clothing that fits the rest of the body.

Symptoms like these are what most funding criteria are written around, and they are also what your surgeon will ask you to describe. Bring the detail: how long, how severe, what you have already tried. It shapes how much tissue is removed, not just whether you are a candidate.

Turkey breast reduction benefits

What the surgery reliably changes, and what patients most often report afterwards:

  • Less load on the back, neck and shoulders, which for many people is the main reason they came.
  • Bra straps that stop digging in.
  • Easier and more comfortable exercise, which tends to compound over the following year.
  • Clothing that fits the whole body rather than the chest.
  • Relief from irritation and rashes in the breast fold.

And the honest other half, which belongs in the same list:

  • Permanent scars. Their pattern depends on the technique and their appearance depends on how you heal, but they do not disappear.
  • Changed or reduced nipple sensation, which usually recovers but sometimes does not.
  • Breastfeeding may be harder afterwards, and for some people it is not possible.
  • A real recovery: two to three weeks off anything physical and six weeks before exercise.
  • Breast tissue can grow again with weight gain, pregnancy or hormonal change.

Turkey breast reduction techniques and costs

The technique is chosen for your anatomy and for how much tissue has to come out, not from a menu. It is worth understanding the three because they differ in scarring, in theatre time and therefore in price, and because a surgeon who cannot explain why they are proposing one is not the right surgeon.

TechniqueSuitsScarRelative cost
Liposuction onlyMostly fatty tissue, good skin tone, little sagging, modest reductionA few small puncture marksLowest of the three
Vertical, the lollipop patternSmall to moderate reductions with some saggingAround the areola and straight down to the foldMiddle
Anchor, the Wise patternLarge reductions and significant saggingAround the areola, down to the fold and along the foldHighest of the three

Scroll sideways for the full table

Liposuction alone removes volume but does very little for position, so it only works when the skin will retract on its own. If the breast needs lifting as well as reducing, one of the other two patterns is the honest answer, and a surgeon offering liposuction for a large, sagging breast is offering you the wrong operation.

Types of breast reduction

Alongside the incision pattern, the other decision is how the nipple keeps its blood supply and its nerves. This is the part that determines sensation and whether breastfeeding stays possible.

  • Pedicle techniques. The nipple and areola stay attached to a stalk of tissue that carries their blood supply and nerves. This is the usual approach and preserves sensation more reliably than the alternatives.
  • Inferior pedicle. The stalk comes from below. Common in traditional anchor pattern reductions.
  • Superior or superomedial pedicle. The stalk comes from above or above and inward, often paired with a vertical pattern.
  • Free nipple graft. In very large reductions the nipple is removed completely and replaced as a graft. It makes the operation safer at that size, but sensation is lost and breastfeeding is not possible afterwards. A surgeon proposing this should explain clearly why the alternative is not safe for you.

How does breast reduction with breast uplift work

In practice most reductions include a lift. Removing tissue and reshaping what is left naturally raises the breast, and the nipple is moved up to sit correctly on the new shape. When a surgeon talks about a combined reduction and uplift, or mastopexy, they usually mean the lift element is being given more weight than the reduction alone would need.

How the combined operation runs:

  1. General anaesthetic, with an anaesthetist present throughout.
  2. The incision pattern is marked with you standing, because gravity is part of the plan.
  3. Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed.
  4. The remaining tissue is reshaped and lifted into position.
  5. The nipple and areola are moved up on their pedicle, and often reduced in diameter.
  6. The incisions are closed in layers, then dressings and a surgical support bra go on.

It adds theatre time and cost compared with a reduction alone, and the scars are the same pattern rather than extra ones. What it buys is position, which volume on its own does not fix.

Choosing a surgeon and a hospital for breast reduction

Breast reduction is not a straightforward cosmetic procedure. It is done under general anaesthetic, it involves a hospital stay, and the technique decision affects sensation, breastfeeding and scarring for the rest of your life. That makes the surgeon and the facility worth more of your attention than the price.

What to verify about the surgeon

  • Their base specialty, in writing. Ask for plastic and reconstructive surgery specifically, not a general description of aesthetic work.
  • How many breast reductions they perform in a year, and across what range of sizes.
  • Which incision pattern and which pedicle they are proposing for you, and why that one.
  • What they expect for your nipple sensation and for breastfeeding, given the technique chosen.
  • Before and after photographs at six and twelve months, from patients with a similar starting point to yours. Ask for cases like yours, not the most flattering ones.

What to verify about the hospital

You need a licensed hospital rather than a day clinic, because this is general anaesthetic surgery with an overnight stay. Ask for the legal name of the facility, its licence from the Turkish Ministry of Health, and its health tourism authorisation. If a clinic tells you a hospital holds an international accreditation such as Joint Commission International, ask them to name the accredited entity and show you the certificate, and check it yourself against the accrediting body's own register. Accreditation is verifiable, and a claim that cannot be verified should be treated as a claim rather than a fact.

Also ask a plain question that gets skipped: who looks after you overnight, and is there intensive care on the same site if it is needed.

What an all inclusive breast reduction package covers

Travelling for breast reduction usually means five to eight nights. That covers your assessment on arrival, the surgery, one to three nights of monitoring in hospital, the removal of any drains, and a final check with your surgical team before you fly.

A package normally includes:

  • Pre-operative assessment on arrival, including blood tests and any imaging required.
  • Surgery, anaesthesia and theatre costs.
  • The hospital stay for the monitoring period.
  • Post-operative nursing, prescribed medication and your surgical support bra.
  • Hotel accommodation for the rest of the stay.
  • Transfers between the airport, hotel and clinic, including any drain removal visits.
  • An interpreter and a coordinator.
  • A check before you fly and remote follow-up afterwards.

What is normally not included: flights, extra garments beyond the one supplied, medication once you are home, and revision surgery if it is needed. Revision terms vary a lot between clinics, so settle in writing before you pay what is covered, for how long, and by whom.

Aftercare and follow-up

Primary recovery runs about six weeks. The final shape, position and scar appearance keep settling for four to six months after that. Before you leave you should have a written week-by-week plan covering when to move from the surgical bra to a soft supportive one, when to start scar care, when light activity resumes, when exercise resumes, and which warning signs mean you call rather than wait. Ask who your point of contact is once you are home, and at which milestones a remote review is scheduled.

Breast reduction recovery week by week

Recovery follows a predictable curve, and knowing the curve is what makes the first three weeks less frightening. Breasts sit high and firm at first and settle over months. That is the process working, not a bad result.

Week 1

You wake with dressings and a surgical support bra, and often with drains, which usually come out in the first few days. Expect swelling, bruising and a tight, heavy feeling across the chest. Sleep on your back with your upper body raised. Gentle walking, nothing lifted, no driving.

Week 2

Stitches come out unless they dissolve. Swelling and bruising start to drop. Many people return to desk work around the end of this week. Still no lifting, no arms above shoulder height, still sleeping on your back. Scar care usually starts once the wounds are fully closed and your surgeon says so.

Weeks 3 and 4

You feel much more like yourself. Swelling falls away and the new shape starts to be visible. Light activity returns. Impact exercise does not, and the surgical bra stays on until your surgeon changes it.

Weeks 5 and 6

Most people are back to a normal routine. This is usually when exercise is cleared, upper body work included, though you should expect to build back rather than pick up where you left off.

Three to six months

Swelling has gone, the breasts have softened and dropped into their final position, and scars begin to fade from red toward pale. This is the first honest point at which to judge the result.

A year and beyond

Scars keep fading for a year or more. The relief from pain and posture problems is usually the change people notice most by this stage, and it tends to be the one they say they wish they had had sooner.

Everyone heals at their own pace and this is a general guide. Follow the instructions your own surgeon gives you where they differ.

Ten tips to aid your recovery from breast reduction surgery

  • Follow your surgeon's instructions over anything you read, including this page.
  • Sleep on your back with your upper body raised for as long as you are told to.
  • Wear the surgical support bra exactly as instructed, including at night.
  • Arrange help for the first fortnight. You will not be lifting shopping, children or your own case.
  • Set everything you use daily at waist height before you travel, so you are not reaching upward.
  • Walk gently and often from day one. It helps circulation and lowers clot risk.
  • Eat and drink properly. Wound healing is a metabolic job and it needs fuel.
  • Do not smoke, and do not start again during healing. Smoking measurably raises the risk of wound breakdown, and in breast reduction it particularly threatens the nipple.
  • Start scar care only when your surgeon clears it, then be consistent about it for months.
  • Call the clinic rather than waiting if you have spreading redness, a fever, a sudden swelling on one side, or pain that is getting worse instead of better.

Exercise after breast reduction

The usual pattern is gentle walking from the first days, light lower body work from around four weeks, and a return to full exercise including upper body and impact at around six weeks, once your surgeon has cleared it. Running and anything that bounces the chest waits for that clearance and for a properly fitted high support sports bra.

Going back too early is the common mistake, and the cost is not soreness. It is wound tension, wider scars and fluid collecting where it should not. For a lot of people the whole point of the surgery was to be able to exercise comfortably, which makes the temptation strong and the patience worth it.

Side effects and risks

Expected in the first weeks, and not a sign anything has gone wrong:

  • Swelling and bruising across the chest and upper abdomen.
  • Tightness and a heavy, firm feeling that eases over months.
  • Altered or reduced nipple sensation, which usually returns.
  • Pain that responds to the prescribed regime.
  • Shooting or tingling sensations as nerves recover.

Less common, and reasons to call the clinic rather than wait:

  • Infection, with spreading redness, local heat or a fever.
  • Bleeding or a collection of fluid that swells one side quickly.
  • Wound edges separating, most often at the point where the scars meet under the breast.
  • Loss of blood supply to the nipple or to the wound edges, which is rare but is the reason smoking matters so much.
  • Blood clots in the leg or lung.
  • Asymmetry, or a shape that does not settle as expected.
  • Permanent loss of nipple sensation, or an inability to breastfeed.

Breastfeeding after breast reduction

Many people can still breastfeed after a reduction, but fewer than after no surgery at all, and nobody can promise you either way beforehand. It depends mostly on the technique: a pedicle method that keeps the nipple attached to its own tissue preserves the ducts far better than a free nipple graft, after which breastfeeding is not possible.

Say at the consultation if you may want to feed a baby later. It genuinely changes the technique discussion, and it is the kind of thing that is easy to raise before and impossible to fix afterwards.

When to consider a second breast reduction

Second reductions are uncommon but they happen, usually for one of these reasons:

  • Breast tissue has grown again after significant weight gain, a pregnancy or a hormonal change.
  • Asymmetry that did not settle once healing was complete.
  • The first reduction removed less than was needed and symptoms came back.
  • The breast has dropped over the years and a lift rather than a further reduction is what is wanted.

Wait until the result is fully settled, which means a year rather than a few months, and take your operation note and any imaging to the consultation. A surgeon planning revision needs to know which pedicle was used the first time, because it determines what is safe the second time.

Who is not a candidate

Breast reduction does not suit everyone, and a surgeon who says otherwise is not the right surgeon. Expect to be turned down, or advised to wait, in these situations:

  • You are still growing. Surgeons wait until breast development has finished.
  • You smoke and are not willing to stop. In breast reduction this is not a formality: the nipple depends on a blood supply that smoking measurably compromises.
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning either in the near future. The breast changes with both, and the result changes with it.
  • Your weight is still moving significantly. Losing a lot of weight after surgery changes breast size and shape, and most surgeons would rather operate on a stable weight.
  • You have an untreated clotting disorder, uncontrolled diabetes or another condition that makes general anaesthetic unsafe until it is stabilised.
  • You want the volume gone but not the scars. The scars are not optional with any technique that reduces a large breast.
  • Someone else is pushing the decision, or you are in an unstable period. Serious clinics decline patients who are not deciding for themselves.
  • You have body dysmorphic disorder. Surgery does not help and usually makes the distress worse. A responsible clinic refers for assessment rather than operating.
  • You cannot stay in Turkey long enough for the wound check and the final visit.

How to read reviews and scores

Reviews of breast reduction are worth more than reviews of most procedures, because the thing being judged is not only how it looks. Read for whether the pain, the posture and the daily restrictions actually improved, and read reviews written at six months or later, because a review written at three weeks is describing a swollen chest.

Three different things get called a score, and they do not add together:

  • FlymediScore is our own clinic score on a scale up to 10, calculated by Flymedi from the data we hold on that clinic.
  • Trustpilot ratings are collected and published by Trustpilot, an independent company. They do not feed into FlymediScore.
  • The review count on a profile shows how much feedback exists, not how good a clinic is.

Keep them apart, and read the negative reviews too. They show you how a clinic behaved when something did not go to plan, which is the one thing an average can never tell you.

For many, the financial burden of upfront payments can be a barrier to accessing treatment abroad. Opting for installment payment plans offers several advantages that make medical treatments more accessible and manageable.

  • Manageable Payments: Small, predictable monthly payments make it easier to plan and budget without depleting savings or emergency funds.
  • Minimized Debt Risk: Installment plans often have lower interest rates and manageable terms than taking a high-interest loan or maxing out credit cards.

I travelled to Istanbul for a breast reduction after dealing with back pain and discomfort for several years. The surgeon at Istanbul Aesthetic Center listened carefully and explained what kind of result would suit my body. The first few days of recovery were a little difficult, but the nurses were very supportive and checked on me regularly. Flymedi organised everything clearly, and I am really happy with how much lighter and more comfortable I feel now 😊

Frequently asked questions

Answers from the medical content team, reviewed by the medical reviewer named on this page.

How much does breast reduction cost in Turkey?
The current package figure and the label saying what it covers are in the quick facts card at the top of this page. It moves with how much tissue is being removed, the technique, whether an uplift is combined with it, the surgeon and the hospital. Compare quotes on what they include first and on price second.
Is it safe to get breast reduction in Turkey?
The procedure carries the same risks wherever it is done. What changes with travel is the setting and the follow-up, so the safety question is really about the specific hospital and surgeon. Ask for the facility's licence and health tourism authorisation, the surgeon's base specialty and annual caseload, and who cares for you overnight.
What does an all inclusive package include?
Usually the surgery, anaesthesia, the hospital stay, the hotel, airport and clinic transfers, your surgical bra, an interpreter and coordination. Flights are usually excluded. Ask for the line items in writing, because clinics do not define all inclusive the same way.
Does the NHS cover breast reduction?
Sometimes. It is one of the few breast procedures the NHS does fund, because it is often treatment for pain rather than a cosmetic choice. Criteria are set locally by each integrated care board and are strict, usually requiring documented symptoms and a body mass index below a stated threshold, and waits are long. Ask your GP before assuming either way.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey?
Plan for 5 to 8 nights. That covers the assessment, the surgery, one to three nights in hospital, drain removal and a final check before you fly.
How long is the recovery?
Most people go back to desk work after about two weeks and to exercise at around six, once cleared. The breasts keep settling for four to six months, and that is when the result can be judged fairly.
How painful is breast reduction surgery?
Expect real discomfort for the first two or three days, mostly a tight, heavy feeling across the chest rather than sharp pain, and it responds to the prescribed regime. It eases quickly after that. Shooting or tingling sensations for a few weeks are normal as nerves recover.
How many cup sizes can you go down?
It depends on how much tissue you have and what can be removed safely while keeping the nipple healthy, not on a number you choose. Two to three cup sizes is a common outcome, and larger reductions are possible but may require a technique that costs you nipple sensation. Your surgeon should tell you the realistic range for your anatomy at the consultation.
Will insurance cover breast reduction?
Private insurers usually exclude it as cosmetic, though some will consider it where symptoms are documented and a clinician supports the case. Policies differ, so ask your insurer in writing rather than relying on a general answer.
Does breast reduction leave scars?
Yes, permanently, with every technique except liposuction only, which suits few people. The pattern runs around the areola and, depending on the technique, down to the breast fold and along it. Scars are red and raised at first and fade over a year or more, and how they settle depends partly on your skin and partly on consistent scar care.
Can you breastfeed after a breast reduction?
Often, but not always, and nobody can promise it beforehand. A pedicle technique that keeps the nipple attached to its own tissue preserves the ducts far better than a free nipple graft, after which it is not possible. Say at the consultation if you may want to feed later, because it changes the technique discussion.
Will I lose nipple sensation?
Altered or reduced sensation is common in the first months and usually recovers. In a minority the change is permanent, in either direction. A free nipple graft removes sensation deliberately and permanently.
Do breasts grow back after a reduction?
The tissue removed does not return, but the tissue left behind still responds to weight gain, pregnancy and hormonal change, so breasts can enlarge again. Operating at a stable weight, and after you have finished having children if you can, makes that less likely.
Is there a minimum or maximum size for a reduction?
There is no universal cup size threshold. What matters is how the size affects your daily life and health, and whether you are fit for general anaesthetic. Some funding routes do set weight or body mass index criteria, but those are funding rules rather than surgical ones.
Should I lose weight first or have the reduction first?
If you are planning significant weight loss, most surgeons would rather you do that first, because losing weight afterwards changes breast size and shape and can undo part of the result. If your weight is stable, waiting achieves nothing.
Will a breast reduction make me look thinner?
Often it makes people look more in proportion, and clothes fit differently, which reads as slimmer. The actual weight removed is small, so it is not a weight loss operation and should not be chosen as one.
Can breast size be reduced without surgery?
Weight loss can reduce breast volume, since breasts contain fat, but it does not reliably reduce glandular tissue and it does not fix position. There is no exercise that reduces breast size specifically. If the problem is pain from breast weight, non-surgical routes rarely solve it.
Can men have breast reduction?
Yes. Male breast reduction for gynaecomastia is a different operation with a different technique and scar pattern, usually smaller. Ask about it specifically rather than assuming this page applies.
Is a reduction combined with an uplift?
Usually to some degree, because removing tissue and reshaping what remains lifts the breast and the nipple is moved up to suit. A formal combined reduction and mastopexy puts more weight on the lift, which adds theatre time and cost but not extra scars.
Can I fly home a few days after surgery?
Plan on the 5 to 8 nights rather than the minimum. Flying early raises clot risk, and leaving before the wound check means a problem shows up when you are far from the person who operated. Ask your surgeon to confirm you are fit to fly before you book the return leg.
When can I sleep on my side?
Usually after several weeks, once your surgeon confirms the breasts have settled. Until then, on your back with your upper body raised.
What if I am not happy with the result?
Talk to the clinic first, and expect to be asked to let the four to six months of settling pass. Revision terms differ between clinics, so settle in writing before you pay what is covered, for how long and by whom.
How do I choose where to have a breast reduction?
There is no single answer, and any page that gives you one is selling something. What matters is the individual surgeon's caseload and technique, the grade of hospital, how long you can stay, and what happens if you need review. Somewhere you can return to easily is worth weighing against a lower price.
How do I verify the clinic and the surgeon?
Ask for the surgeon's name and base specialty, how many breast reductions they do a year, the hospital's legal name and its Ministry of Health licence, and photographs at six or twelve months from patients like you. Any accreditation claim should come with a certificate you can check against the accrediting body's register. A coordinator who will not put this in writing before payment has already answered you.
