Limb lengthening surgery in Turkey

Limb lengthening divides the bone and separates the ends slowly so new bone forms in the gap. The lengthening phase takes months and the bone then has to harden for months more, so the process is closer to a year than to a few weeks, with a meaningfully higher complication rate than routine surgery. Flymedi lets you compare accredited hospitals and surgeons in Turkey.

Limb lengthening surgery in Turkey

Limb lengthening cuts the bone and then separates the two ends by a fraction of a millimetre a day, so that new bone forms in the gap. The lengthening itself takes months, and the bone then has to harden for months more before it will take your weight.

This is not a procedure with a recovery measured in weeks. It is close to a year of your life, most of it spent in daily physiotherapy, and the complication rate is meaningfully higher than for ordinary elective surgery. Anyone describing it as straightforward is not describing this operation.

How the lengthening actually works

The principle is distraction osteogenesis. The bone is divided, a device holds the ends apart, and you turn or activate that device a little each day. Bone forms in the gap because it is pulled apart slowly enough to heal continuously. Go faster and the bone does not form; go slower and it fuses before you have finished.

  • The soft tissues are the limit, not the bone

Nerves, muscles and tendons lengthen more reluctantly than bone. Most of the serious complications and most of the pain come from them, not from the bone itself.
  • Consolidation takes longer than lengthening

After you stop lengthening, the new bone is soft and has to harden before you can bear weight. That phase is typically longer than the lengthening phase.
  • Physiotherapy is the treatment

Daily stretching and joint work, for months, is what prevents contractures. People who skip it lose knee or ankle movement, sometimes permanently.
  • There is a limit to how much

Gains are constrained by what the nerves and muscles tolerate. Pushing beyond that is how permanent nerve damage and stiff joints happen.

External frame or internal nail

  • External fixator. A frame outside the leg with pins through the skin into the bone. It allows correction of angle as well as length, but the pin sites are exposed and infection at them is common.
  • Internal motorised nail. A lengthening rod inside the bone, activated by an external magnetic device. No pins through the skin, so far fewer infections, and it is more comfortable and less visible.
  • The nail costs more. The implant itself is expensive, which is a large part of why quotes differ so much between clinics and countries.
  • Not every case suits a nail. Deformity correction, very short bones and some previous surgery may still need a frame. A surgeon who offers only one method is offering their method, not necessarily yours.

Cosmetic lengthening deserves a harder look

Lengthening for a genuine discrepancy between two legs, or for a deformity, is reconstructive surgery with a clear medical purpose. Lengthening both legs purely for height is a different matter: it takes a healthy body and imposes a long, painful and risky process on it. Some surgeons decline it altogether, and reputable ones who do perform it insist on a psychological assessment first and turn people down. Being assessed rather than simply booked is a sign you are in the right place.

What the process involves

  1. Assessment and imaging

Standing alignment images, joint assessment and, for cosmetic cases, a psychological assessment. Expectations are discussed before anything is booked.
  2. Surgery

The bone is divided and the device is fitted, under general anaesthetic, with a hospital stay afterwards.
  3. A waiting period

Lengthening does not start immediately. The bone is left for a short period first so that healing begins.
  4. The lengthening phase

You lengthen a small amount each day, in several turns, alongside daily physiotherapy. This phase lasts months and is the demanding part.
  5. The consolidation phase

Lengthening stops and the new bone hardens. Weight bearing is increased gradually, on the surgeon's instruction and with imaging to confirm.
  6. Device removal

The frame or the nail is removed in a further operation once the bone is solid.

What life is actually like during it

  • Mobility is limited for months. Crutches or a walker for a long period, and adaptations at home. Stairs, bathing and getting around all need planning before surgery, not after.
  • Physiotherapy most days. This is the single largest predictor of how you end up. It is also uncomfortable and it is not optional.
  • Pain is a constant companion. Not the surgical pain of the first week, but the ongoing ache of tissues being stretched, managed over months.
  • Time off is measured in months. Sedentary work may resume partway through. Physical work does not until the bone has consolidated.
  • It is psychologically hard. Long immobility, dependence on others and slow progress are widely reported. Planning support in advance matters.

Doing it abroad, honestly considered

This operation needs close follow-up for the better part of a year, and that is difficult to arrange across borders. Before booking, settle three things: who supervises the lengthening phase and how often they will see you, who provides physiotherapy where you actually live, and who manages a complication if it arises at home. A package that covers the surgery and a fortnight afterwards leaves the longest and riskiest part of the process unaccounted for. On staged payment, see the payment plans page.

What drives the price in Turkey

  • Frame or internal nail. The largest single factor, because the motorised implant is expensive.
  • One segment or two. Lengthening the thigh bones, the shin bones, or both in sequence, changes the cost and the timeline substantially.
  • Length of stay and follow-up. How much of the lengthening phase is supervised locally, and how many review visits are included.
  • Physiotherapy. Whether it is included, for how long, and whether it continues after you go home.
  • Device removal. A second operation. Check whether it is in the quoted price.

The clinic list on this page shows the current price for each hospital with a label saying what it covers. Related orthopaedic procedures are covered on the scoliosis treatment and shoulder arthroscopy pages.

Choosing a surgeon

  • Ask how many they do a year. This is a specialised field and volume matters more here than in most operations.
  • Ask about their complication rate and reoperation rate. A surgeon who quotes both without hesitation is one who audits their results.
  • Ask who does the physiotherapy. And what happens to it when you fly home.
  • Ask what they would refuse. For cosmetic cases in particular, a service that assesses and sometimes declines is safer than one that accepts everybody.

I first saw the limb lengthening surgery video on Flymedi's YouTube channel, and it really helped me understand the whole process. After that, I decided to contact Istanbul European Clinic, and they’ve been amazing from start to finish. The surgery went smoothly, and the team was so supportive throughout my recovery. I’m already seeing the results, and it’s been life-changing!!

Frequently asked questions

Answers from the medical content team, reviewed by the medical reviewer named on this page.

How much does limb lengthening cost in Turkey?
It depends mainly on whether an external frame or an internal motorised nail is used, on how many bone segments are lengthened and on how much follow-up and physiotherapy is included. The clinic list on this page shows the current price for each hospital with a note of what it covers.
How long does the whole process take?
The lengthening phase takes months, and the consolidation phase that follows usually takes longer again. Plan for close to a year before you are back to unrestricted activity.
Is it painful?
Yes, and the pain is prolonged rather than sharp. Most of it comes from soft tissues being stretched rather than from the bone, and it is managed over months.
What is the difference between a frame and an internal nail?
A frame sits outside the leg with pins through the skin and allows angular correction, but pin-site infection is common. An internal nail sits inside the bone and is activated magnetically, with fewer infections and a higher implant cost.
What are the most serious complications?
Nerve injury, joint contracture, and failure of the new bone to form or harden. Further operations are common, and this should be discussed before you agree to anything.
Can I have it done just to be taller?
Some surgeons perform cosmetic lengthening and others decline it. Reputable services assess candidates, including psychologically, and turn people down. Being assessed rather than simply booked is a good sign.
Will I be able to run and play sport afterwards?
Many people return to ordinary activity, but this depends on the amount of lengthening, joint function and how consistently physiotherapy was done. Ask your surgeon about your own case rather than assuming.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey?
Longer than for most procedures, because the lengthening phase needs supervision. Establish before booking who supervises each phase and who handles a complication once you are home.
