Neck liposuction in Turkey

Neck liposuction removes fat from under the chin and across the front of the neck through two or three entry points a few millimetres wide, usually under local anaesthetic with sedation. It sharpens the line between the jaw and the neck by taking away what sits in front of it.

It is a contouring procedure, not a tightening one. Fat responds to suction. Loose skin, a slack platysma muscle, a low-lying salivary gland and a chin that sits too far back do not, and mistaking any of them for fat is the single commonest reason people are disappointed by this operation.

   Examination

   The surgeon pinches the fat, releases the skin and watches how fast it returns, asks you to tense the neck to see the platysma, feels for the salivary glands and looks at your profile. This examination is the entire decision.

   Anaesthetic

   Usually local with sedation. It is a short procedure and most people go home the same day.

   Entry points

   Typically one under the chin and one behind each ear, a few millimetres each, placed so they settle into a crease.

   Suction with fine cannulas

   Fat is reduced evenly across the submental pocket and along the jaw. Taking too much leaves hollows and irregularity that are difficult to correct, and a deliberately conservative surgeon is worth more than an enthusiastic one.

   Compression garment

   A chin strap worn as instructed. It affects how the skin redrapes and it is not optional.

   Review before you fly

   The surgeon checks the entry points and the early contour, and confirms when you can travel.

• It is short, but do not book it around a flight. Swelling peaks in the first days and the strap is worn constantly. Ask when the surgeon will clear you to travel.
• Take the consultation with the operating surgeon. Because the decision here is a physical examination, and a coordinator cannot do it.
• Ask what they will do if the skin does not redrape. And whether a neck lift would then be a second trip, and at whose cost.
• Ask what is combined. Neck liposuction is often done with a chin implant or a neck lift. Each should be quoted as its own line.
• Bring photographs of yourself from a few years ago. They tell the surgeon how your neck has changed, which is more useful than a photograph of someone else.

• Ask them to name what is causing your fullness. Fat, skin, muscle, gland or jaw position. If the answer is only fat and they have not tested your skin, look elsewhere.
• Ask what they would decline. A surgeon who turns down poor skin elasticity for liposuction alone is applying judgement rather than taking an order.
• Ask about the nerve. Specifically the branch that moves the lower lip, and what protects it in their technique.
• Ask to see results at six months. Photographs taken in a strap at two weeks show compression, not contour.
• Ask how many of these they do. Not liposuction in general. The neck is a small field with important structures in it.
