Breast implants abroad

Four things are different: how you are assessed, who answers afterwards, how the price is built, and how much of the recovery happens away from your own doctor.

• Assessment starts remotely

  You send photographs and your medical history, and the surgeon confirms the plan in person shortly before surgery. Ask what happens if that face to face consultation changes the implant size, the technique or the price.

• Follow-up is split in two

  The clinic removes the dressings and clears you to fly. Everything after that, the swelling, the support bra, the return to exercise, is managed at home, so agree in writing who answers your questions once you have landed.

• The quote is a package, not a surgeon's fee

  Two clinics can quote very different figures for the same operation because one includes the implants, the overnight stay, the medication and the transfers and the other does not.

• Revision is a written rule, not a promise

  Before you book, ask what the clinic does if an implant has to be replaced or the result has to be corrected, who pays for what, and how long that offer stands.

Prices differ from country to country, and they differ between surgeons inside one country more than they differ between countries. Each clinic's current price range, with its basis label, appears in the clinic list on this page rather than in this text, because clinic pricing moves.

What moves the price of a breast augmentation:

• The implant itself. Brand, shell surface, profile and volume all change the cost, and a form stable implant is quoted above a standard smooth round one.
• Whether a lift is added. An augmentation combined with a mastopexy is a longer operation with more scarring, and it is quoted as such.
• Whether it is a first operation or a revision. Replacing implants or releasing a tight capsule is harder than a primary augmentation and costs more.
• The surgeon. Someone who operates on breasts exclusively quotes above a general plastic surgeon in the same city.
• What is inside the package. Hospital nights, hotel, transfers, the surgical bra and medication are either inside the number or outside it.

Turkey

Turkey is the country most people think of first when they talk about surgery abroad. Istanbul concentrates surgeons who operate on breasts almost exclusively, quotes are usually all-inclusive, and the volume of international patients means the clinics are set up for the travel side as well as the surgery. Mexico

Mexico is the practical option from North America. Tijuana, Guadalajara and Cancún are a short flight away, many surgeons trained or practised in the United States, and returning for a check-up is realistic rather than theoretical. See breast implants in Mexico.

Thailand

Thailand pairs long established private hospitals with attentive aftercare and recovery conditions closer to a hotel than a ward. Bangkok and Phuket handle a steady flow of international patients, and the larger hospitals hold international accreditation, which makes Thailand a common choice from Australia and the United Kingdom despite the flight.

Colombia

Colombia has a long plastic surgery tradition in Bogotá and Medellín, with a reputation for body contouring and for combining an augmentation with a lift in a single operation.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is the short haul option inside Europe, and Prague clinics have been treating patients from Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom for years. The flight is short enough to make a return visit for a check-up realistic instead of managing everything remotely.

Poland

The implant decides how the result feels and how it ages. The type, the surface, the profile and the volume should all be named in your quote.

Smooth and textured describes the shell surface rather than the filling, and it is a safety conversation as much as a feel conversation. Ask which surface your surgeon is proposing and why, and ask for the manufacturer, the profile and the volume in writing.

Ask every clinic the same questions and compare the answers rather than the brochures.

• Who operates, what is their specialist registration, and how much of their work is breast surgery?
• Which implant are you proposing for me, which brand, surface and profile, and why that one?
• Where does the surgery happen, and is that facility accredited?
• What exactly is inside the price and what is outside it?
• What is the revision rule, in writing?
• Who do I contact after I fly home, and in which language?
• Can I see before and after photographs of patients who started where I am, taken by this surgeon?

Breast augmentation is real surgery with real complications, and implants are not lifetime devices. A page that says otherwise is selling you something.

• Bleeding, infection and reactions to the anaesthetic, as in any operation.
• Capsular contracture, where the scar capsule around the implant tightens and the breast becomes firm, rides high or hurts.
• Rupture or deflation of an implant, which can be silent with silicone gel and is obvious with saline.
• Changes in nipple and skin sensation, which often settle but can persist.
• Rippling, or a visible implant edge, more likely where there is little breast tissue to cover it.
• Asymmetry, or a position you are not happy with, the most common reason for a second operation.
• Breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a rare cancer of the immune system that has been linked with textured implants, which is one reason your surgeon should name the surface and the brand they are using.

Implants are replaced or removed at some point, and the timing is individual rather than fixed. Ask your surgeon what would trigger a replacement in your case, and agree before you travel who decides, who pays for surgery, hospital and flights, and how long that offer stands.

Ordinary travel insurance does not cover planned cosmetic surgery abroad or its complications. Read the exclusions on your policy and ask the clinic what cover it brings.

Cost does not have to decide on its own, because payment can be spread.

What are the hidden costs to watch out for when planning surgery abroad?

An all-inclusive package should remove the surprises, but ask for the exclusions to be confirmed rather than assuming them. What usually sits outside the package is the flights, extra hotel nights if the surgeon keeps you longer, medication once the supplied course runs out, meals and personal spending, a second surgical bra, and any revision surgery.
