Details

As the name implies, inverted nipple surgery is a procedure that is designed to recontour the nipple so that it projects outward from the breast. The surgery has proven to be safe and it guarantees natural results when performed by experienced hands. Basically, there are two techniques used to perform this procedure. The first technique preserves the milk ducts and the second one does not. In other terms, the former can correct the patient's condition while preserving her ability to breastfeed, whereas the latter can correct the condition but not the patient may not be able to breastfeed again. It's estimated that 8 out of 10 of women have at least one inverted nipple world over.

Who is it for?

  • All women whose nipples are sunken and don't normally protrude above the mammary areola.
  • Although most 90% of patients are women, men can also have inverted nipples.

Treatment Duration

It often lasts between 30 to 120 minutes depending on the severity of the inversion.

Potential Risks and Side Effects

  • Nipple could invert again
  • Milk duct may be damaged impacting future breastfeeding
  • Scarring
  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Asymmetry (nipples do not look the same on each side)

Recovery Time

Most patients return to work in about 2 days after the procedure but heavy physical activities should be avoided for approximately 2 weeks as well, giving the nipple ample time to heal.

Success Rate: 80–90%

How does it work?

Once you have decided to undergo an inverted nipple surgery, we will make sure that you have a pleasant trip and your procedure will be customized in a way that minimizes scarring. During the online consultations, expect the following questions:

  •  Have you ever had a breast lift/implant surgery before?
  • Do you smoke?
  • How intense is the current pain you are feeling?
  • Do you have any medical conditions that we should be aware of?
  • Are you currently taking any medication?

Planning your trip and choosing the clinic

When you decide to have a pterygium surgery, our first step will be to present to you several detailed options of clinics and doctors. After you have chosen your preferred clinic and doctor, we will then set up an operation date and arrange your trip. All the dates are set according to your preferences!

This surgery is usually performed in the morning or afternoon, so we always recommend that you arrive in Turkey a day before the surgery –so that you can have enough time to rest.

Final Consultation with Your Surgeon

When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with your inverted nipple surgery. Part of the discussions will be about your expectations and goals.

Medical Examinations

Before the surgery commences, your surgeon will conduct physical and blood tests to make sure that you are in a good health state. Every patient is required to undergo medical tests so as to ensure that nothing can hinder the success of the surgery.

Preparation for Surgery

To make you feel comfortable during the surgery, your surgeon will give you local anesthesia. If you have Trypanophobia (fear of needles), you should let us know so that we can offer you doctors who can give you anesthesia without using needles.

What Does Inverted Nipple Surgery Involve?

Obviously, the way the inverted nipple is performed depends on the type of technique used. Patients who are having inverted nipple surgery in order to breastfeed can have a procedure that uses a technique that partially preserves milk ducts. Here is what you should expect from such a surgery:

  • Once local anesthesia kicks in, your doctor will make an incision around the base of your nipple.
  • While still attached, the nipple and areola are both lifted from the breast and sewn into a protruding shape.
  • Your doctor will then close the incision and apply medicated gauze.

For patients who are not planning to breastfeed, the inverted nipple surgery with milk duct detachment is their best shot. This procedure is more common. Here’s what you should expect from this surgery:

  • Your doctor may use a combination of local anesthesia and sedation before making an incision at the base of the nipple.
  • Your milk ducts are then detached. This will allow the nipple to protrude.
  • Your doctor will then close the incision and apply medicated gauze.

Your doctor will help you choose the best option for you.

FAQ

Can I Breastfeed After Having Inverted Nipple Surgery?

The answer depends on the degree of your situation. Generally speaking, patients with severe inversion do not breastfeed after inverted nipple correction.

How Long Do the Results Last?

The results of this surgery are usually permanent, but some factors, such as pregnancy or rapid weight gain, may cause the nipple to be inverted again.

Is it Possible to Get A Breast Lift and/or Breast Implant done in conjunction with inverted nipple surgery?

Each procedure reduces the patient's blood supply and is not wise to be done in conjunction – the healing process will take much longer.

Will Nipples Invert Again After Surgery?

Corrective surgery for inverted nipples have a high success rate, and nipple inversion re-occurrence is not common. Cases of nipples inverting after the surgery are rare, but not possible.
