How Does It Work?

It is a treatment aimed to eliminate tooth decay to preserve the health of the affected tooth. Therefore, the dentist must treat the damaged part of the tooth to prevent tooth decay from spreading to the root of the tooth. This will cause a “hole” in the tooth that will have to be filled so that the patient can eat and smile normally.

What Does a Tooth Filling Involve?

1.         Consultation for Tooth Filling

Your treatment process begins with an online consultation. Our experts listen to your complaints and your expectations; They will inform you about whether you need a tooth filling or any other/additional treatments. It is important to share all your medical information that may be useful at this stage.

2.         Planning Your Trip and Choosing the Clinic

At this second stage, we will offer a list of dental clinics or dentists that meet the criteria you provide us. You will then examine all of them and select one of them. Depending on your choice, we start planning your trip and the entire treatment process. You may need to stay in the city you choose for your dental filling procedure for 2-3 days on average.

3.         Final Consultation with Your Dentist

When you arrive at the dental clinic, you will have a consultation with your dentist. The dentist will ask you some questions to try to understand your expectations and concerns and also make you understand what you should expect from your treatment and the potential risks or complications of the procedure. Your dentist and the dental clinic will explain the whole process clearly and try to simulate it as much as possible, in order you to feel ready.

4.         Medical Examinations

Before the tooth filling procedure begins, your dentist will conduct physical and blood tests to make sure that you are in acceptable health status for the process. If you have any condition to be treated before the tooth filling process, your dentist will try to eliminate it first.

5.         Treatment

The tooth filling is a technique that is used to fill the cavity of a tooth that has been caused by tooth decay or trauma. Before performing any tooth filling, the dentist must ensure that the area is clean and prepared. Some dentists use a spray to refresh the area where they will inject the anesthetic. In this way, the patient will hardly perceive the perforation. After a few minutes, the area will have become numb and will be ready to have the tooth filled. The dentist will use appropriate instruments to remove all decay and deterioration that has occurred. Once the area is cleaned, the tooth can be restored by filling. If the damage has come near the root, the dentist may decide to place a resin material that protects the nerve before.

Once the tooth is prepared, the selected tooth filling material will be placed gradually and a special light will be applied that hardens each layer. When the drying process of all the layers is finished the dentist will remove the excess material until reaching the desired shape, and finally, the piece will be polished so that there is hardly any difference with the rest.

Usually, this entire procedure can be done in one session. However, there are some fillings that once the area has been prepared are not placed immediately, they are made in a laboratory.

Occasionally, the patient may notice some sensitivity in the treated area. This sensitivity will disappear in a few days. If this does not occur, it is best to go to the dentist again to evaluate if there is an additional problem.

Types of Tooth Filling

There are different types of tooth filling, depending on the filling materials used:

  • Metals: the amalgam of silver, gold, and copper are the most frequent. They are the most durable (up to 30 years) but have the disadvantage of their low aesthetic value since they stand out a lot about the natural color of the teeth. Until recently, mercury was also used, but it has been largely eliminated because of its toxicity.

  • Resin: they allow to recover the original appearance of the tooth, even in its color. The materials used today are ceramic and plastic (composite). The disadvantage is that despite its aesthetic achievement, the duration of the dental filling is shorter: a maximum of 10 years. They are the ones that are commonly used on the front teeth. These materials are also used to mask tooth defects (differences in size, separation, etc.) and color alterations.

FAQ

What Is A Tooth Decay?

The foods we eat have different degrees of acidity. The little pieces of food remain in our teeth and if we do not remove them immediately, they can affect our dental health. Thus, the enamel of our molars may disappear in some areas. From this moment, we can talk about tooth decay.

How Durable the Tooth Fillings?

Although the average duration of a dental filling is ten years, it will depend largely on the patient's habits. Hence undergoing an annual dental examination is advised, so that before you feel discomfort or have become visible, their replacement must be considered.

What Is the Difference Between Dental Reconstruction (Implants) And Tooth Filling?

The tooth filling is intended to repair small areas of a tooth. However, when tooth decay is very large and has affected a large part of the tooth, a reconstruction will be necessary, which also involves removing the damaged part and restoring the missing tooth.

I had a wonderful experience booking my dental work with Flymedi. I needed a fair amount of work done and was required to visit twice but luckily the clinic was so hygienic and professional that it was a no-brainer to return. The dentist was great, he explained the procedure very clearly and I knew exactly what was going to happen in each session. The procedure itself was totally painless which was a first for me having had bad experiences with dentists in the past so that was really encouraging. I would highly recommend Flymedi's services as they exceeded my expectations (:

I was considering several different options, however Abud was by far the most committed and helpful of all the agents I'd been in discussions with. Everything was organised for me and I was guided throughout and if I was feeling apprehensive about anything or had any questions Abud was always on hand to answer my questions and give reassurances. I'm so happy with the results of my operation and I was left overwhelmed by how friendly and supportive everyone was throughout. If you're considering using flymedi then I can honestly say you'll be delighted with the service both before during and after your surgery.
