Laser eye surgery reshapes the cornea so that light focuses on the retina without glasses or contact lenses, and Turkey does more of it than almost anywhere in Europe: the private eye hospitals of Istanbul and Antalya run LASIK, SMILE and PRK lists every day on the same laser platforms used in London, Berlin and Paris, and they price the operation for both eyes at a level that makes the flight worth considering. The operation takes minutes per eye and is done under anaesthetic drops; what decides whether the trip works is the examination that says whether you are a candidate and which procedure fits your cornea, the surgeon's own numbers, and the follow-up on both sides of the flight. This page covers all of that, plus what the price does and does not include, how to read reviews, what the risks are, and what the years after look like.
Figures are ranges, not promises. Suitability needs an individual assessment by a doctor.
Each clinic sets its own price, so check what the price includes before comparing two of them.

All laser vision correction does the same thing: an excimer or femtosecond laser removes a precise layer of corneal tissue so that the cornea's curve matches your prescription. The procedures differ in how the laser reaches that tissue. LASIK cuts a thin flap, lifts it, reshapes underneath and lays it back. SMILE removes a small lenticule of tissue through a keyhole incision with no flap. PRK and its variants remove the surface layer first and let it regrow. Each has a candidate profile, a recovery pattern and a price, and the examination on arrival decides between them, not the brochure.
Why Turkey: volume and price. The large eye hospitals grew up on laser correction for Turkish patients long before international ones arrived, so the surgeons who operate on you are doing the same operation many times a week, and the platforms, femtosecond lasers for the flap, SMILE systems, wavefront-guided excimer lasers, are the ones sold everywhere else. The price is usually quoted for both eyes and often as a package with the hotel and transfers, which is the number people compare with a per-eye private quote at home. Most patients come from the UK and Ireland, Germany and the Gulf, and most of them go to Istanbul; Antalya has a smaller cluster of established clinics and is where the beach-and-surgery packages come from.
The clinics listed below are ranked by FlymediScore, and each price carries its basis, all-inclusive package or treatment only, so you can see what a figure actually buys. This page is the explanation that sits around that list.
Laser correction is an operation on healthy eyes that happen to need glasses, and the candidate rules exist to keep it that way. You are a straightforward candidate if:
Who should not have it: anyone with keratoconus or a suspicious topography, because thinning a cornea that is already weak can make it bulge; anyone whose prescription is still moving; anyone with severe dry eye, which LASIK makes worse for months; and anyone past the age where reading glasses have arrived, because a laser fixes distance vision and leaves you needing readers, so a lens exchange is often the better conversation. A clinic that quotes you a price and a date before it has seen a topography of your cornea is not screening you, and the point of the examination on arrival is that a good surgeon will send some people home unoperated.
| Procedure | How it works | Who it suits, and the trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| LASIK (microkeratome flap) | A blade creates a thin flap, the excimer laser reshapes the cornea underneath, the flap is laid back | The standard, fastest recovery, clear vision within a day; the flap is a weak point for contact sports and it causes the most dry eye |
| Femto-LASIK | Same as LASIK but the flap is cut by a femtosecond laser rather than a blade | More precise flap, fewer flap complications, higher price; the same dry-eye and sport caveats as LASIK |
| SMILE | A femtosecond laser cuts a lenticule inside the cornea, removed through a small incision, no flap | Less dry eye and no flap risk; treats short sight and astigmatism, not long sight; enhancement is harder; the highest laser price |
| PRK, LASEK, trans-PRK | The surface layer is removed and the laser reshapes the cornea directly; the surface regrows | For thin corneas, dry eyes and contact sports; painful for days, blurred for a week or two, priced below the other laser options, and the slowest to settle |
| ICL or lens exchange (not laser) | An implantable lens is placed inside the eye, in front of or instead of the natural lens | For prescriptions too high or corneas too thin for laser, and for the reading-glasses age; a different operation, on the pages for those procedures |
Scroll sideways for the full table
The table is a starting point. Which procedure you get is decided by corneal thickness and shape, pupil size, tear film and prescription, measured on the day. Two honest things to know before comparing prices: a clinic that offers only one of these procedures will tend to find that it suits you, and the marketing names that clinics attach to their lasers, iLASIK, no-touch, premium, custom, describe the platform's options rather than a different operation. Ask which machine, which procedure and why, in those words.
Both eyes are treated in the same session, which is normal for laser correction everywhere and is part of why the trip is short. The sequence is examination, surgery within a day or two, a check the next morning and a discharge check before you fly, and the whole thing fits in well under a week for LASIK and SMILE; PRK needs a few days more because the surface has to regrow before you are cleared to travel.
The starting prices on this page come from the clinics and are shown per clinic with their basis, all-inclusive package or treatment only. We do not print a figure in the text, because a laser price without the procedure, the number of eyes and the basis is not comparable with anything, and a number typed here would be wrong the week the clinics changed theirs. One convention to know: Turkish clinics usually quote for both eyes, most private clinics in the UK and Ireland quote per eye, so double the home quote before you compare.
What moves the price, roughly in order: the procedure, because SMILE and femto-LASIK cost more than blade LASIK and PRK costs least; the platform and whether wavefront or topography-guided treatment is included; the surgeon and the hospital; whether the examination, the drops and the check-ups are inside the price; the enhancement policy, meaning whether a touch-up within a set period is included and whether you must fly back for it; and, in a treatment-only price, the transfers and the hotel. An all-inclusive laser eye surgery package in Turkey typically bundles the examination, the surgery for both eyes, the drops, the checks during your stay, airport and clinic transfers and the hotel nights; it typically does not include flights, a change of procedure decided after the examination, treatment of a complication once you are home, or a return trip for an enhancement.
What the written quote must name before you pay:
The lasers, the diagnostics and the procedures are the same as in Western Europe, and the safety of your operation depends on three things that are not national: whether the screening was thorough enough to exclude you if it should have, how many of these operations your surgeon does, and whether someone competent sees you afterwards. Those are what you check, clinic by clinic. The risk travel adds is real but specific: if a flap problem or an infection appears in the first days, you want to be in the same city as your surgeon, which is why the next-day and discharge checks are not optional and why the return flight should not be booked for the evening of surgery.
Reviews are the other thing people search for, and most of what exists is written on the day after surgery, when everyone is delighted. Read for the ones written months later, which mention dry eye, night vision and whether a touch-up was needed and how the clinic handled it; read the reviews of Turkish patients too, because the same surgeon operates on them; and treat with suspicion a clinic whose every review is perfect, a page that promises that no one ever needs glasses again, and any price that arrives before the topography does.
Searching for which laser eye clinic in Turkey is the one to pick brings up pages that award themselves the title; nobody keeps that ranking. What you can check is more useful. The clinic must be licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health. The surgeon must be an ophthalmologist whose work is cornea and refractive surgery, not a general eye surgeon who lasers on Fridays; ask how many laser procedures they do in a year and how many of the one you are having. Ask which platform they use for the flap and for the reshaping, and whether SMILE and PRK are also on the table, because a clinic with all three chooses; a clinic with one sells. Ask who sees you the next day and who answers the phone once you are home. An international hospital accreditation such as JCI describes the hospital's processes, not the surgeon's hands.
Istanbul has the most eye hospitals, the most international departments and the most flights, so most patients go there. Antalya has a smaller group of established clinics and a resort around them, and the packages that combine surgery with a hotel week come from there; the surgery is the same, and the choice should still be made on the surgeon. Izmir and Ankara have good clinics with fewer foreign patients. Whichever city, do not book a holiday-first itinerary: no swimming, no sunbathing with sweat running into the eyes and no dusty excursions in the days after surgery.
After LASIK and SMILE, most people see well the next day and are back at a screen within days; the drops continue on the written schedule, the eyes stay dry and light-sensitive for a while, and the prescription settles over months. Keep water, soap and make-up away from the eyes for the first week, do not rub them, sleep with the shields as long as you are told, and wait for the surgeon's go-ahead before swimming, contact sports and dusty work. After PRK, count on several uncomfortable days and a fortnight of blur before the surface has healed and the drops schedule can ease.
What happens years later is the question people ask least and should ask most. The reshaped cornea is stable in most people, and a small regression, usually in the higher prescriptions, is what enhancements are for. Presbyopia arrives regardless: in your forties or fifties you will need reading glasses whether or not you had laser, because that is the lens ageing, not the cornea. A cataract can still form later, and the surgeon who operates on it will need your laser records to calculate the new lens, which is one more reason to keep the operation report. Dry eye that persists is the long-term complaint that matters most, and it is more likely if your tear film was marginal before surgery, which is a screening question, not luck.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Procedures | LASIK, femto-LASIK, SMILE, PRK and its variants; implantable lenses for eyes that laser does not suit |
| Anaesthesia | Anaesthetic drops; awake throughout, minutes per eye |
| Both eyes | Treated in the same session |
| Stay in Turkey | Examination, surgery, next-day check, discharge check: days for LASIK and SMILE, longer for PRK |
| Flying home | After the discharge check; the cabin air is dry, so bring the drops |
| Back to screens and work | Within days after LASIK and SMILE; longer after PRK |
| Cost | Usually quoted for both eyes; see the clinic list with its basis, all-inclusive package or treatment only |
| Main side effects | Dry eye, night halos and glare, fluctuating vision, under- or over-correction |
| Rare complications | Flap problems, infection, corneal ectasia, persistent dry eye or night-vision problems |
| Not a candidate | Keratoconus or suspicious topography, unstable prescription, severe dry eye, pregnancy, uncontrolled autoimmune disease |

I had LASIK eye surgery here, and it’s like seeing the world in HD. I was a bit nervous about lasers near my eyes but the surgeon was fantastic. Vision was blurry for a day, then suddenly crystal clear. Can’t believe I waited this long to fix my eyes 👀
