Eyes are the reflection of our emotions and the mirror of our beauty. A young and bright eye contour makes you more beautiful and attractive. If the eye area is particularly important, its shape is even more so. This is why many women dream of having almond-shaped eyes.

Canthopexy or lateral canthoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves modifying the original shape of the eye. During the operation, the surgeon will make sure to raise the corner of the eye to stretch it and then give an “almond-shaped look” which is more charming. This canthal facelift allows a person to have a more exotic and younger look. Canthopexy is for men and women who want to change the way they look.

Who Is This For?

  • Healthy women and men who want to reshape their eyes to get an almond shape
  • Individuals who have a sad and tired look due to inherited lower eyelid retraction with negative canthal tilt
  • Individuals who have round eyes which can occur following a thyroid disease

Treatment Duration

1-2 hours

Potential Risks & Side Effects

  • Swelling and bruising
  • Eyelid asymmetries
  • Adverse reactions to anesthesia
  •  Infection
  • Visible scars
  • Dry eyes
  • Tearing
  • Hypertrophic scarring

Recovery Time

You will need to rest for 24 hours. In general, it is possible to resume social activities or work two or three days after surgery.

Success Rate: 85-90%

Alternative Treatments

  • Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

How Does it Work?

Performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia, this eye surgery is performed through an incision in the corner of the eyelid.

The external canthus is detached and replaced a little higher than the inner canthus, to ensure the almond-shaped look so coveted. The position of the eye pupil plays an important role and serves as a benchmark for the final external location, to ensure that it does not interfere with vision in any case.

Hospitalization can be done on an outpatient basis or with a short stay in the clinic or hospital.

What Does an Almond Eye Surgery Involve?

1.       Consultation for Almond Eye Surgery

As in every process, you will take an online consultation to make sure that you’re a suitable candidate for the almond eye surgery. During this consultation, your complaints and story will be learned in detail and you will be asked if you have had any current health condition or any surgery that you have experienced before, as well as the photos of your eyes. Thus, we can better evaluate your case and prepare a customized treatment plan for you.

In light of all the information you provide, it will be decided whether you are eligible for this treatment and if you want to continue the process, the second phase will begin.

2.       Planning Your Trip and Choosing the Clinic

This is the stage where you choose one of the clinics and surgeons which we offer you according to your needs, and also where we arrange the date and trip plan that suits you upon your preferred clinic/surgeon.

3.       Final Consultation with Your Surgeon

When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with your surgeon. Everything about your surgery will be discussed between you and your surgeon during this consultation. The surgeon will ask you some questions to try to understand your expectations and goals better and also make you understand what you should expect from your treatment and the potential risks or complications of the procedure. You will also decide together the individualized surgical and recovery plan that can be followed after the surgery. The surgeon will explain the whole process clearly and try to simulate it as much as possible, in order you to feel ready and comfortable.

4.       Medical Examinations

Before the surgery begins, your surgeon will conduct physical and blood tests to make sure that you are in acceptable health status for the surgery. Every patient is required to undergo medical tests to ensure that nothing can hinder the success of the surgery and if any risk obtained, surgeons try to eliminate them first.

5.       Surgery

The surgery will consist of the following steps:

  • Administration of Anesthesia: Almond eye surgery can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation. However, for the comfort of patients, general anesthesia may be requested.
  •  Making the Incision: During the almond eye surgery procedure, the surgeon will create small incisions at the level of the external canthus to stretch the eye.
  • Procedure: There are many types of techniques for performing almond eye surgery. The choice of one or the other depends on the preferences of each surgeon. Generally, the surgeon makes an incision of about 1 cm in length in the upper eyelid, in one of the horizontal folds in this area. This will keep the scar hidden. If almond eye surgery is performed at the same time as blepharoplasty, the same incision is used for both procedures. Through this incision, the surgeon accesses the canthal tendon, the one that supports the edge of the lower eyelid. He or she then puts it back in tension and fixes it to the membrane covering the periosteum. Finally, sutures the incision. In cases where the edge of the lower eyelid has too much excess skin, the surgeon can also cut a small portion of skin close to the commissure, remove it and join the resulting edges to produce an additional increase in tension. In general, almond eye surgery is not painful and does not cause other symptoms. However, for one or two weeks after the procedure, there is always the presence of local swelling and bruising.

What Should I Expect from Almond Eye Surgery?

  • After an almond eye surgery, rest is recommended first, as after any surgery elsewhere. Don't panic, you can quickly resume your social activities and work as if nothing had happened.
  • Your eyes will certainly be more sensitive to light than usual. It is therefore recommended to wear sunglasses to protect them. For patients who wear contact lenses, they cannot be worn during the 2 weeks following the operation. Make-up should also be avoided to ensure good healing.
  • You may feel your eyes too dry, irritated or itchy. Your vision may become temporarily blurred or double. Don't be afraid, it's normal and will improve in a couple of days.
  • The pain is moderate. You will feel your eyelids tight and irritated for a few days. Your doctor will tell you about pain relievers that you should take every 6 to 8 hours. Eye drops also help relieve discomfort.
  • Your surgeon will provide you with precious advice regarding the post-operative procedures. It is important to take note of it and to follow the indications provided.
  •  During each cosmetic surgery procedure, there are risks and side effects to be expected. It is important that when you meet the surgeon, these risks are clearly explained to you. However, complications during an almond eye surgery are considered rare, especially if you have chosen a qualified and reputable specialist.
  • The goal of almond eye surgery is first to provide a better appearance of the eyelids to the patient while leaving an almost invisible scar. Its natural result allows a real change of look while remaining discreet. Your entourage will surely find you a little "changed", in the good sense of the term, without being too obvious.

Things You Should Consider Before Almond Eye Surgery

  • You should get all the lab testing and see your surgeon make him/her evaluate your current health status
  • Your surgeon may prescribe you a certain medication or may adjust your current medications
  • You should stop smoking
  • Avoiding to take aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements is also important because it can increase bleeding in the whole process of septoplasty.

FAQ

Is Almond Eye Surgery Procedure Painful?

You may feel pain or soreness after the procedure is performed. However, your surgeon will prescribe painkillers to relieve this pain and discomfort.

Does Almond Eye Surgery Leave a Scar?

To avoid causing an external scar, the surgeon often makes an incision from the natural folds of the upper eyelid.

What Is the Difference Between Canthopexy And Canthoplasty?

Although these are two different procedures, canthopexy and canthoplasty are synonymous terms. These two practices concern intervention at the level of the external canthus. Canthopexy is the technique used by the surgeon to tighten the corner of the eye. Lateral canthoplasty is a more invasive method and an uncommon technique in cosmetic surgery. It creates a new way to support the eyelid. It will be this surgery that will, therefore, be performed on patients who have the lower eyelid drooping.

Canthopexy is intended for people who have a lot of skin on the eyelid or who have a sagging eyelid. Canthopexy is also the best solution for people who are getting older to mask wrinkles in the eyes. Following eyelid surgery or paralysis, the eyelids may be drooping. In this case, the patient can use canthopexy to improve the aesthetics of his gaze. Canthopexy is also used to correct round eyes, a phenomenon that occurs after a thyroid disease.
