Chin reduction surgery, also known as reduction genioplasty or reduction mentoplasty is a type of plastic surgery procedure usually performed to improve the aesthetic appearance of the chin area.
The purpose of chin reduction surgery is to improve the balance and facial harmony by changing the size or shape of the chin. This procedure is performed to remove some of the bone around the jaw to provide a sharper and more balanced appearance.

Most people have a prominent chin generally due to genetics. While a strong and prominent chin can be a good appearance for male patients, females don't usually prefer a large chin as it is symbolized masculinity. As such, most patients requiring chin reduction surgery are females, but it's not a female-only procedure, some males may also feel that a smaller chin can be more balanced with their facial proportions.

Other procedures related to chin area include:
● Chin implant surgery
● Chin augmentation or enhancement surgery
● Sliding genioplasty surgery

Reduction genioplasty or chin reduction surgery can be performed by itself or in conjunction with rhinoplasty surgery or a neck lift procedure – the latter being recommended for patients with excess skin and fatty tissue around the chin (also known as a double chin).

How Does it Work?

The goal of chin reduction surgery is to restore harmony to the chin area with the entire face. The shape of the chin affects the expression of the facial profile. If the chin is far ahead, the balance of the face will be affected. The procedure does not affect the dental joint or the cheeks. This procedure leaves no external scar and the results are very satisfactory. It can be done on an outpatient basis with discharge the same day or in traditional hospitalization and discharge the next day. Chin reduction is usually done with rhinoplasty or liposuction of the neck to create a permanent and complete V-shaped face.

What Does a Chin Reduction Surgery Involve?

1.       Consultation for Chin Reduction

As in every process, you will take an online consultation to make sure that you’re a suitable candidate for the chin reduction surgery. During this consultation, your complaints and story will be learned in detail and you will be asked if you have had any current health condition or any surgery that you have experienced before, as well as the photos showing your chin and face. Thus, we can better evaluate your case and prepare a customized treatment plan for you.

In light of all the information you provide, it will be decided whether you are eligible for this treatment and if you want to continue the process, the second phase will begin.

2.       Planning Your Trip and Choosing the Clinic

This is the stage where you choose one of the clinics and surgeons we offer you according to your needs, and also where we arrange the date and trip plan that suits you upon your preferred clinic/surgeon.

3.       Final Consultation with Your Surgeon

When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with your chin reduction surgeon. Everything about your surgery will be discussed between you and your surgeon during this consultation. The surgeon will ask you some questions to try to understand your expectations and goals better and also make you understand what you should expect from your treatment and the potential risks or complications of the procedure. You will also decide together the individualized surgical and recovery plan that can be followed, especially during the first 24 to 48 hours after the surgery. The surgeon will explain the whole process clearly and try to simulate it as much as possible, in order you to feel comfortable and well-prepared.

4.       Medical Examinations

Before the surgery begins, your surgeon will conduct physical and blood tests to make sure that you are in acceptable health status for the surgery. Every patient is required to undergo medical tests to ensure that nothing can hinder the success of the surgery and if any risk obtained, surgeons try to eliminate them first.

5.       Surgery

  • The chin reduction surgery takes place under general anesthesia.
  • After the anesthesia has been applied, the surgeon makes an incision either inside the mouth along the bottom lip or underneath the chin.
  • Then the surgeon separates the skin from the chin bone and begins to reshape the chin structure. The excess bone and tissue of the chin will be removed and the tip of the chin can be repositioned according to the scope of the surgery.
  • Finally, the incisions are closed. The surgical sutures are dissolving in 1-2 weeks.
  • It normally takes between an hour and an hour and a half depending on the complexity of the surgery.
  • Chin reduction does not affect the position of the teeth because the incisions are made in the bone under the roots of the teeth.
  • A compression garment or facial support band will be placed over the chin and jaw at the end of the surgery to help control the edema.

What Should I Expect from Chin Reduction?

  • When you leave the operating room, you will wear an elastic or compression bandage covering your lower face. Probably it will be removed the next day.
  •  If you want to apply makeup, you can do it the day after surgery.
  • During the first two days, you will have to follow a liquid diet and then you will switch to the soft diet.
  • You must take care of the sores of the lower gums until they heal: to avoid the proliferation of bacteria in the mouth, you should not eat raw dairy or vegetable products or meat that is not well cooked.
  • To help maintain hygiene, you can rinse your mouth with an antiseptic liquid.
  •  If you don't mind being seen with a swollen face, you can resume your social activities a week after the surgery, but you will have to wait two or three weeks before doing heavy work or physical activity.
  • To speed up the recovery process, you will need to sleep with your head up and also apply ice packs.

Things You Should Consider Before Chin Reduction Surgery

  • You should get all the lab testing and see your surgeon make him/her evaluate your current health status
  • Your surgeon may prescribe you a certain medication or may adjust your current medications
  • You should stop smoking
  • Avoiding to take aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements is also important because it can increase bleeding in the whole process of chin reduction.

Is Chin Reduction Procedure Painful?

The patients may experience pain or soreness after the procedure is done. However, the surgeons prescribe painkillers to relieve this pain and discomfort.

Does Chin Reduction Leave a Scar?

As the incision is placed in the lower gum of the lip, scars are hidden inside the mouth after the chin reduction surgery.

When Can I See the Final Results of My Chin Reduction Surgery?

You can see and feel the change of your chin immediately after the chin reduction surgery, but it can take 6 weeks or more for the final result to be achieved.
