Porcelain crowns are ideal solutions for repairing damaged or missing teeth, offering high durability and a natural tooth-like appearance. Porcelain crowns are often recommended by dentists for the restoration of anterior teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Porcelain crowns placement does not harm the tooth, but rather prolongs the life of the tooth. Porcelain crowns are produced from high-quality materials that can be individually designed for each patient and represent the most natural tooth appearance. Porcelain, which is the material closest to the natural appearance and color of the teeth, is one of the most preferred materials for dentists when the aesthetic expectation is highest.

Individuals with advanced tooth decay, gum conditions or with a level of infection that will require canal treatment cannot be suitable for this treatment. However, upon the decision of your dentist, it may be possible to get the porcelain crowns treatment after the completion of your primary treatment.

Who Is This For?

  •  Individuals with crooked or misshapen teeth or dental deficiencies
  • Individuals with tooth decay that are too wide to be completed with a tooth filling
  • Individuals with broken teeth

Treatment Duration

 7-10 days

 Potential Risks & Side Effects

  • Anesthetic complications
  • Chipped or loosened crown
  •  Infection
  • Allergic reaction
  • Loss of crown
  • Gum disease
  • Teeth sensitivity

Recovery Time

There is no need for remarkable recovery time after the porcelain crowns process. You can continue your daily routine immediately unless a local anesthetic is applied. Likewise, you can return to work the day after treatment, or even immediately after treatment.

Success Rate: 90-95%

Alternative Treatments

  • Porcelain Onlays
  • Phasing Treatment
  • Porcelain Veneers

How Does it Work?

Porcelain crowns can be used for aesthetic reasons to correct colorless, shapeless teeth as well as tooth restorations used instead of damaged teeth. Crowns are placed on the teeth above the gum line, but they can also be placed on implants. They can be easily shaped and colored to fit the patient's natural teeth perfectly. In this way, they offer minimum discomfort and maximum naturalness.

What Does Porcelain Crowns Treatment Involve?

1.    Consultation for Porcelain Crowns

The first step to start your Porcelain Crown process will be the online consultation phase. At this stage, our specialist will try to get to know you and your complaint closely to make sure you are a suitable candidate for porcelain crown treatment. Your health history, allergies, medications you use, your ideas about the process and your priority expectations from treatment are the most important data to determine the most appropriate treatment for you at this stage, and if this is porcelain crowns, the most suitable dentist / dental clinic for this.

The photo of your tooth/teeth that you have problems with or want to cover with porcelain crowns will be very useful to understand your eligibility during the online consultation phase.

2.    Planning Your Trip and Choosing the Clinic

At this stage, you have now made your decision for porcelain crowns and you want to consider the options. Therefore, we offer you our clinic or dentist options based on the dates that best suit you and your special requests, if any, and we expect you to choose one.

3.    Final Consultation with Your Dentist

When you arrive at the dentist's office, you will have a face-to-face consultation with your dentist. He or she will ask you some questions to try to understand your expectations better and also make you understand what you should expect from your porcelain crowns treatment. Your dentist will explain everything you need to know about dental crowns in general and porcelain crowns specifically and try to simulate the results as much as possible, in order you to feel ready and comfortable.

4.    Medical Examinations

Before the porcelain crowns process begins, your dentist will conduct medical tests to make sure that you are in acceptable health status for the treatment. Every patient is required to undergo medical tests to ensure that nothing can hinder the success of the process and if any risk obtained, dentists try to eliminate them first.

5.    Application

There will be 2 visits to complete the porcelain crowns application process. These are:

First Appointment: Preparation and Taking Impression

  • In the beginning, the dentist examines the functionality of the tooth nerve and the stability of the tooth root. During the preliminary examination, an X-ray image of the affected tooth is sometimes taken and evaluated.
  •  Treatment begins with the administration of local anesthesia.
  • For preparing the tooth for the procedure, the tooth is cleaned, shaped and a specific amount of tooth structure (generally size of 0.5 or 0.7 millimeters) should be trimmed away. Up to 60 percent of the partially healthy hard substance has to be removed. The shape of the prepared tooth helps to ensure the crown's stability.
  • Then the dentist takes an impression and sends it to the laboratory. Your dentist can do this in the traditional way, by taking molds from your teeth, or through the CEREC technology in a single session using a computer. The impression contains a copy of the prepared tooth, it's surrounding gum tissue, and the other teeth on that jaw.
  •  A temporary crown is then placed on the tooth while the porcelain crowns are produced.
  • The laboratory prepares the crown(s) generally in 7-10 days.

Second Appointment: Placement and Cementation

  • During your second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and check that the prepared porcelain crowns match perfectly with your natural teeth. If so, he or she will put it on your tooth with special dental cement to restore it to its original appearance.
  • Once cemented, a porcelain crown completely covers the tooth permanently. Porcelain is the material which is mainly used for the manufacture of crowns since it has the most aesthetic qualities. It resembles a real tooth, by its shape and color.

Types of Dental Crowns

1.    All-ceramic or All-Porcelain Dental Crowns: All-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns look so natural that they can hardly be distinguished from your teeth. The naturalness refers to all points: from the shape to the color to the gloss and transparency of the material. While standard crowns consist of a metal framework and a plastic veneer, the higher quality crowns are made entirely of ceramic.

2.    Porcelain-Fused to Metal Dental Crowns: This type of crown offers a stronger bond than normal porcelain because it is connected to a metal structure. It is characterized by extreme durability.

3.    Stainless Steel Dental Crowns: Stainless steel crowns are temporary metal crowns that are used to rebuild the damaged teeth. They are often used in the back of the jaw. In some cases, they are also used in the front area.

4.    Base Metal Alloys Dental Crowns: This type of crown is very resistant to corrosion and consists of very strong base metals. It may not be an advantageous dental crown type for those whose priority is natural appearance and it may also more tend to develop an allergy.

Things You Should Consider After Porcelain Crowns Treatment

  • You should not consume excessively hot or cold foods and beverages for at least a week after the treatment is completed.
  • Hard to chew and sticky foods should also be avoided in this period
  • In the first week after treatment, mild pain and tenderness may occur in your treated teeth. This is normal and the dentist will prescribe you painkillers to relieve pain.
  • If any of your porcelain crowns are damaged, broken, cracked or detached, you should visit your dentist by carefully packing the broken piece. Your dentist will try to reposition the piece, if this method is not aesthetically or medically appropriate, he or she can order a new porcelain crown.
  • As with any dental prosthesis, the longevity of your dental crown largely depends on your oral hygiene. Although it is not particularly prone to periodontal disease or cavities, the tooth below your crown is alive, so you should brush it regularly to avoid the risk of infection. So, remember to brush your teeth after each meal, use dental floss and mouthwash and regularly visit to your dentist to check that everything is fine and that your teeth are in good health.

FAQ

Is Porcelain Crowns Procedure Painful?

After the porcelain crown treatment, the pain is almost non-existent, but if it is felt, it can be relieved with standard pain medication.

How Durable Are Porcelain Crowns?

The durability period of porcelain crowns is 10 years on average; the most frequent reason for failure was a fracture of the ceramic.

What Are the Main Differences Between Dental Crowns and Dental Veneers?

Both crowns and veneers are dental restoration materials and use to cover an existing tooth to improve its appearance or function. The dental crown is used to strengthen a damaged tooth, while veneers are mainly used for cosmetic improvements. Dental crowns cover the entire visible part of the tooth while the veneers are an ultra-thin layer produced to cover the front of a tooth.

I would absolutely recommend this clinic and Dr. Osman. I recently had 20 zirconium crowns placed on my teeth and am so happy with the outcome. At first, I was extremely nervous about the procedure but every step of the way I was able to contact the Flymedi with my questions through WhatsApp. I was provided with transportation to and from each appointment and to the airport even though my flight left very early in the morning. Dr Osman was very patient with me, I am a very nervous patient and the drilling always scares me. He was understanding and patient. My treatment was completed over 3 appointments. Before the procedure started Dr. Osman took the time to explain and answer any of my questions and giving me advice on aesthetics and color of the crowns. During the whole treatment, I was given outstanding service that was above anything I have experienced in the U.S. or U.K. I am so thankful to the team at Umut Antalya Dental Clinic and Flymedi would recommend it to anyone.
