• Parts availability, years later

  Implants need servicing. Screws loosen, abutments break, crowns need replacing. Every system uses its own components, and if yours is obscure or discontinued your dentist at home may not be able to get them.

• Documented long-term data

  Established systems have published follow-up going back decades. Newer or budget systems may work perfectly well, but there is less evidence about what they do over a lifetime.

• Surface and design

  The implant surface affects how quickly bone integrates. This is where the real technical differences between systems lie, and it can shorten the wait before the crown goes on.

• What the brand does not do

  It does not compensate for poor placement, insufficient bone, untreated gum disease or smoking. Those determine success far more than the label on the screw.

   Assessment and imaging

   A cone beam scan shows bone volume and the position of nerves and sinuses. Gum disease must be treated before any implant is placed.

   Bone grafting, if needed

   Where bone is insufficient, grafting or a sinus lift comes first, and that adds months to the timeline before the implant itself.

   Placing the implant

   Done under local anaesthetic. The screw is placed in the bone and the gum closed over or around it.

   Healing and integration

   Bone grows onto the implant surface over a period of months. Some cases allow a temporary tooth immediately, many do not.

   The crown

   An abutment and crown are fitted once integration is confirmed. This second stage is why implant treatment abroad usually means two trips.

• How many implants. The main factor, and whether they carry single crowns or support a bridge or denture.
• Whether grafting is needed. Bone grafting or a sinus lift adds cost and adds months.
• The crown material. Zirconia, porcelain fused to metal and other options are priced differently and should be itemised.
• What the package covers. Whether the crown, the abutment, follow-up and any repair are included, or only the implant itself.
