What booking through Flymedi adds

Clinics set their prices and carry out your treatment. Flymedi is free for patients and adds support around it.

Every doctor listed on Flymedi is checked as an individual, including their licence to practise and whether the facility they work in holds a current operating licence. How we verify

Why patients choose Spain

  • Dental and cosmetic specialists, and private hospitals. Most clinics listed in Spain are dental clinics and plastic surgery practices. The large private hospitals listed here also treat patients in orthopaedics, eye care, cancer care and fertility.
  • Prices you can compare. Dental clinics listed in Spain publish starting prices, each labelled with what it covers, while hospitals and surgeons usually quote once they have assessed your case. Compare listed prices and what they cover.
  • Short flights. Many Spanish cities have direct flights from the UK and Ireland, which makes a second trip or a check-up visit practical when a treatment needs one.
  • EU rules and public registers. Spain is in the European Union. Every health centre needs authorisation from its regional health authority, private providers must be insured, and doctors and dentists must be registered with a professional college to practise.

Most clinics listed in Spain offer dental treatment, including dental implants, or plastic surgery. Private hospitals listed in Spain also offer orthopaedic surgery, eye surgery, cancer care, fertility treatment, weight-loss surgery and hair transplants. Each link opens the clinics and treatments in that category.

Is medical tourism in Spain safe?

Spain is a member of the European Union, and its healthcare is regulated. Every health centre, public or private, needs authorisation from the health authority of its region before it can open, and the Ministry of Health keeps a public register of authorised centres. Private clinics and professionals in private practice must hold liability insurance or equivalent financial cover, and doctors and dentists must be registered with a professional college to practise. Any surgery or dental procedure carries risks, wherever it takes place.

The added risks of treatment abroad come from choosing on price alone, using a provider you have not checked, flying home too soon and weak follow-up once you are back. The UK government's health advice for Spain is worth reading before you book: it explains that a GHIC or EHIC covers medically necessary state healthcare, and that private hospitals do not accept it.

How to check a clinic before you book

  1. The clinic appears in the Ministry of Health's national register of health centres, known as REGCESS, which you can search online.
  2. You know who will perform your procedure, and their specialty matches it. Doctors appear in the public register of the General Council of Medical Colleges, which you can search by name or registration number, and dentists in Guía Dentistas, the General Council of Dentists' public directory. For cosmetic surgery, ask whether your surgeon is a specialist in plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.
  3. For major surgery, you know whether the hospital has intensive care on site, and where you would be transferred if you needed it.
  4. Your treatment plan, the price and what it includes are in writing before you travel. For dental work, the plan names the implant system or the crown material.
  5. Aftercare and revision terms are in writing, and reviews come from verified patients. See how we verify doctors and how reviews work on Flymedi.

How to plan your treatment in Spain

  1. Share your case

Tell us your goals and your medical history, with photos where they help. For dental work, a recent X-ray of your teeth lets the clinic plan before you travel. If you see a doctor or dentist at home, ask whether the treatment suits you and share what they say.
  2. Compare offers, not headline prices

Check what each offer includes: treatment only, or hotel, transfers and an interpreter as well. Check who performs the procedure and where. Listed clinics are in Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia, Castellón and other cities.
  3. Consult before you book

Speak to the surgeon or dentist online before you commit. Get the treatment plan, the schedule and the price in writing.
  4. Check the entry rules

Spain is in the Schengen area. British citizens can visit without a visa for short stays, and the EU's Entry/Exit System may ask you to register your fingerprints and a photo at the border. Border officers can ask for a return ticket, proof of where you are staying, travel insurance and enough money for your stay, so keep your clinic and hotel confirmations with you. Check the UK government's entry requirements for Spain before you book flights, including the passport rules. If you hold another passport, check with the Spanish embassy or consulate in your country.
  5. Plan your stay

Stay as long as your doctor recommends, including the time before you are cleared to fly. Some treatments take more than one trip: dental implants usually need a second visit for the final teeth once the implants have healed, so ask for the full schedule before you book. If a complication means you need to stay longer than your visa-free time allows, apply to Spain's immigration office (Extranjería) to extend your stay. Each treatment page explains recovery for that procedure, and our pre-op guide covers what to do before you travel.
  6. Plan aftercare at home

Know your medication, when your follow-up checks are and who to contact: your coordinator and the clinic. Tell your own doctor or dentist about the treatment when you are home.

Frequently asked questions

How much does treatment in Spain cost?
It depends on the treatment, the clinic and what the offer includes. Flymedi shows clinics' listed starting prices in the price table on this page, each labelled "Treatment only" or "All-inclusive package". Many hospitals and surgeons in Spain show "Price on request" and quote once they have assessed your case. Either way, your final price comes after the assessment, and you get it in writing.
What does a treatment package in Spain usually include?
It varies by clinic. Most prices listed for Spain are for the treatment only, which excludes travel and stay. Some clinics also arrange a hotel, airport transfers or an interpreter, and flights are usually not included. Check the written offer for exactly what is covered and for how many nights.
How and when do I pay?
Each clinic sets its own payment terms, and your written offer says whether a deposit is due, when the balance is paid and how. Instalment options depend on your country, the clinic and the amount: see payment plans.
Do I need a visa for medical treatment in Spain?
It depends on your nationality. Spain is in the Schengen area, and British citizens can visit without a visa for short stays. Check the UK government's entry requirements for Spain before you book, including the passport rules. If you hold another passport, check with the Spanish embassy or consulate in your country.
How long should I stay in Spain after my procedure?
As long as your surgeon or dentist recommends. It depends on the procedure and on how you recover, and it includes the time before you are cleared to fly. Dental implants usually mean a second trip once the implants have healed. Each treatment page explains recovery for that procedure, and your treatment plan confirms the dates for your case.
Do doctors and staff speak English?
Often, yes. Clinics that treat international patients usually have English-speaking staff, and some provide an interpreter as part of the offer. Ask which languages your surgeon or dentist speaks, and have the interpreter written into your offer if you need one.
Can I bring a companion?
Yes, and many patients travel with a partner, relative or friend who can help during the first days of recovery. Ask whether your offer covers a companion's hotel stay and transfers, or what they add to the price. If your companion needs a visa, check the rules for them too.
Will my GHIC or insurance cover treatment in Spain?
A GHIC or EHIC covers medically necessary state healthcare during your stay. Private hospitals do not accept it, and it does not cover treatment you travel to Spain to have. Look for travel insurance that explicitly covers planned treatment abroad and its complications, and confirm the terms with the insurer before you book. If you are insured in an EU country, including Ireland, EU cross-border healthcare rules may let your health service refund some treatment, up to what it would pay at home; ask before you book, because hospital care often needs approval in advance. The UK government's health advice for Spain sets out what the cards cover.
What happens if I have a concern after I get home?
Tell your coordinator, who stays your contact after treatment, raises your concern with the clinic and follows it through with you. If your surgeon confirms a revision is needed, we arrange it with the clinic under its revision policy, which is in your written offer. See what booking through Flymedi adds.
Is Flymedi free to use?
Yes, Flymedi is free for patients. Clinics pay us a fee when a patient they treated came through Flymedi, and the price you are quoted is the price the clinic charges. See how Flymedi works.
