Details

Strabismus surgery is a medical procedure performed on the extraocular muscles to correct the misalignment of the eyes –medically known as the strabismus. Besides correcting eye misalignment, strabismus surgery is also designed to straighten the eyes and restore binocular (two-eyed) vision. Depending on how severe the condition is, some patients may need more than one strabismus surgery to straighten their eyes.

Who is it for?

  • People with misaligned eyes.
  •  Patients with eye strain or fatigue
  • People with a double vision caused by strabismus.

Treatment duration

Between 1 and 2 hours

Potential Risks and Side Effects

How does it work

Once you have decided to undergo a strabismus surgery, we will make sure that you have a pleasant trip and your procedure will be customized in a way that minimizes scarring. During the online consultations, expect the following questions:

  • How intense is the current pain you are feeling?
  • Do you have any medical conditions that we should be aware of?
  • Are you currently taking any medication?

Planning your trip and choosing the clinic

When you decide to have a pterygium surgery, our first step will be to present to you several detailed options of clinics and doctors. After you have chosen your preferred clinic and doctor, we will then set up an operation date and arrange your trip. All the dates are set according to your preferences!

This surgery is usually performed in the morning or afternoon, so we always recommend that you arrive in Turkey a day before the surgery –so that you can have enough time to rest.

Final Consultation with Your Surgeon

When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with your strabismus surgery. Part of the discussions will be about your expectations and goals.

Medical Examinations

Before the surgery commences, your surgeon will conduct physical and blood tests to make sure that you are in a good health state. Every patient is required to undergo medical tests so as to ensure that nothing can hinder the success of the surgery.

Preparation for Surgery

To make you feel comfortable during the surgery, your surgeon will give you local anesthesia. If you have Trypanophobia (fear of needles), you should let us know so that we can offer you doctors who can give you anesthesia without using needles.

What does Strabismus Surgery Involve?

  • During the strabismus surgery, the patient’s eyelids are held open by a lid speculum. Before the procedure commences, patients are required to fast for 8 hours. This is the reason why most pediatric cases are often scheduled in the early morning.
  • Children are usually given general anesthesia, whereas adults are given local anesthesia. In some cases, doctors may need to go as far as giving children medication that helps alleviate their anxiety of being separated from their parents.
  • During the strabismus surgery, surgeons will not remove the eyeball from the eye socket. To access the eye muscle, surgeons will have to make a small opening through the conjunctiva. The muscle is then weakened, strengthened or moved to change its action with dissolvable sutures. After the surgery, the patient will have to be at the hospital for several hours as the doctors will be monitoring him/her.

FAQ

Can I wear make-up on the day of the operation?
No. You should appear without makeup and bring dark sunglasses.

Can I smoke before the operation?
Limit smoking if possible. Smoking leads to increased bleeding during the operation and, as a consequence, to bruising and poorer wound healing.

Is a hospital stay necessary?
The doctor will specifically discuss this question with you during your first consultation.

Will I experience pain during surgery?
No. The operation will be painless for you. This applies for both general anesthesias and for local anesthesia.

After the surgery, what can I do to make my eyelids swell as little as possible?
In the first 48 hours, as much as possible should be cooled by means of a cooling face mask. This is delivered to the patient after each operation.
