Septoplasty in Turkey

Most people have some deviation and never notice it. It becomes a surgical question when it narrows an airway enough to change how you breathe, sleep or heal.

• Blockage on one side

  The classic sign. One nostril is persistently harder to breathe through, and it does not change with decongestants or allergy treatment.

• Sleep and snoring

  A narrowed airway makes snoring more likely and mouth breathing more common. It is not the same thing as sleep apnoea, which needs its own assessment.

• Repeated sinus problems

  When one side does not drain properly, sinus infections tend to recur on that side.

• Nosebleeds and crusting

  Airflow across a deviated septum dries the lining, which causes crusting and bleeding in the same spot.

The operation is done from inside the nostrils under general anaesthetic in most Turkish hospitals, though some surgeons use sedation with local anaesthetic for limited corrections.

   Lifting the lining

   The surgeon raises the mucous membrane off one side of the septum, so the bone and cartilage underneath can be reached without cutting the lining that has to heal.

   Correcting the deviation

   Bent cartilage is scored, reshaped or partly removed, and bony spurs are taken away. Enough of the framework is always left behind to hold the nose up.

   Supporting the repair

   The lining is laid back down and held with dissolvable stitches. Many surgeons now use soft internal splints with breathing tubes rather than the older solid packing.

   Waking up

   You go to the recovery unit with the nose stuffy rather than painful. Most patients stay one night, and some go home the same day.

The first week is the uncomfortable part, and almost all of that discomfort is congestion rather than pain.

   The first days

   The nose is blocked with swelling and old blood, so you breathe through your mouth. Sleeping propped up helps. Splints, if used, come out at the first check.

   The first fortnight

   Crusting and a blood-tinged discharge are normal. Saline rinses are the main treatment. No nose blowing, no heavy lifting, no bending forward.

   Weeks three to six

   Breathing steadily improves as internal swelling settles. Contact sport and anything that risks a knock to the nose stay off the list.

   Months two to twelve

   The last of the swelling resolves slowly, and the airway you end up with is the one judged at the far end of this period, not at the first follow-up.

Two quotes for a septoplasty can describe two different operations. Compare what sits behind the number before comparing numbers.

• Whether it is septoplasty alone or a septorhinoplasty. Adding cosmetic work adds theatre time and changes the price bracket entirely.
• Whether turbinate reduction is included. It is frequently needed alongside and is a common separate line item.
• Anaesthetic type and hospital nights. General anaesthetic with an overnight stay costs more than sedation and same-day discharge, and is often the safer choice.
• Whether the follow-up visit before you fly is in the package. Splint removal and the flight clearance check should be included, not extra.
• The revision policy. Ask who pays for theatre, hospital and flights if a second operation is needed, and get it in writing.

• Send imaging and a full history first. Previous nasal injury or surgery changes the plan, and the surgeon needs to know before you are in the country.
• Stop smoking well before the date. Smoking impairs healing of the nasal lining more than almost any other factor and raises the risk of a poor result.
• Agree the blood thinner plan with your own doctor. Aspirin and anti-inflammatories increase bleeding and are usually stopped in advance, but that decision belongs to the doctor who prescribed them.
• Book a changeable return. Flying is normally allowed after the first check, but if there is bleeding or an infection you will be told to wait.
• Arrange the follow-up at home. Ask who you contact after you land, in what language, and what your own GP or ENT will need from the operating team.
