Planning a medical trip requires careful consideration. To ensure your experience is safe, smooth, and successful, follow these essential steps:
A mastectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or both breasts, either partially or completely. Its primary purpose is to treat or prevent breast cancer. By removing the breast tissue where cancer can develop or has already been found, the surgery aims to eliminate the disease and significantly reduce the risk of it returning or spreading.
Understanding the recovery process helps you plan accordingly and set realistic expectations for your healing journey.
The mastectomy process is structured to ensure your safety and achieve the best possible outcome.
Your journey begins with a thorough consultation. During this meeting, you will discuss your medical history, diagnosis, and treatment goals with the surgeon. They will explain the different types of mastectomy, recommend the best approach for you, and detail the procedure, potential outcomes, and associated risks.
In the days leading up to your surgery, you will undergo pre-operative medical tests. Your surgeon will instruct you to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners. You will also be required to fast (not eat or drink) for at least 8 hours before the procedure.
The surgeon performs the mastectomy by making incisions on the breast to remove the breast tissue. The amount of tissue and skin removed depends on the specific type of mastectomy being performed. In some cases, nearby lymph nodes may also be removed to check if the cancer has spread. If you have opted for immediate reconstruction, this will be done during the same operation.
A follow-up appointment is scheduled a few days to a week after your surgery. During this visit, your surgeon will monitor your healing, remove any surgical drains if they were used, and discuss the next steps in your treatment or recovery plan.
The cost of a mastectomy can vary dramatically between countries. Turkey offers a significant financial advantage without sacrificing the quality of medical care.
Note: Prices are estimates and can vary based on the complexity of the procedure and the specific clinic.
As with any major surgery, a mastectomy has potential side effects. Your surgical team will work to minimize these risks. They may include:
A mastectomy is a highly effective procedure for treating and preventing breast cancer. The primary goal is the complete removal of cancerous tissue, and success is measured by the reduction in cancer recurrence. Studies show that for localized breast cancer (stages I-III), the 5-year survival rate after treatment, which often includes a mastectomy, is over 90%. Patient satisfaction is generally high, particularly when post-operative care and emotional support are prioritized.
Proper preparation is key to a smooth procedure and recovery. Your medical team will provide specific instructions, but general guidelines include:

Flymedi did everything very quickly and professional. They arranged the hospital and gave me options on which one to choose. From the first contact I was very impressed and Mustafa took very good care of my wife and I. He even took a day of work to take us to the Bosphorus. Flymedi is the company to use if you require any private medical treatment. There service to the client is better than first class. Gaziozmanpasa hospital was fantastic and ALL the staff from the Administrators to the Medical Team who were involved in my wife's breast cancer treatment were beyond excellent. They treated you as if you were the most important person there. The facilities were excellent and the hospital is immaculate throughout. A great big thank you to all involved. A special thank you to Mustafa Gamze and Elif for there personal care and attention. Mustafa is a terrific representative of Flymedi.

A mastectomy is performed to remove breast tissue in order to treat existing breast cancer or to prevent cancer from developing in high-risk individuals.
You will be under general anesthesia during the surgery and will not feel pain. Post-operative pain and discomfort are expected but can be effectively managed with prescribed pain medication.
Most patients stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days after a mastectomy, depending on the extent of the surgery and whether reconstruction was performed.
Yes, breast reconstruction is a common option. It can be done at the same time as the mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date (delayed reconstruction). You can discuss your options with your surgeon.
Types include total (simple) mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, skin-sparing mastectomy, and nipple-sparing mastectomy. The best type for you depends on your specific medical situation.
Yes, it is common to have one or two temporary surgical drains placed to remove excess fluid from the surgical site. They are typically removed during your follow-up appointment.
You should wear loose, comfortable clothing that opens in the front to avoid lifting your arms. A special post-surgical bra or camisole will be provided to offer support and hold drains.
Your surgeon will provide detailed instructions. Generally, you will need to keep the incision area clean and dry and follow specific guidelines for changing dressings.
Numbness in the chest, underarm, and upper arm is a common and often permanent side effect because nerves are cut during the surgery. Some sensation may return over time.
Lymphedema is a chronic swelling that can occur in the arm on the same side as the surgery if lymph nodes were removed. Your team will teach you how to reduce your risk.
Yes, a bilateral mastectomy involves removing both breasts. This is often done for preventative reasons in high-risk individuals or if cancer is present in both breasts.
Yes, a mastectomy will leave a scar across your chest. The appearance of the scar will depend on the type of surgery and your body's healing process.
Yes, when performed at an accredited hospital by a board-certified surgeon, a mastectomy in Turkey is as safe as it would be in any other developed country.
Most surgeons and medical staff at hospitals catering to international patients are fluent in English, and translators are readily available if needed.
This depends on your specific cancer diagnosis, such as the stage and type. Your oncologist will create a comprehensive treatment plan that may include additional therapies after surgery.
It is vital to seek emotional support. Consider joining support groups, speaking with a counselor, and maintaining open communication with your loved ones to navigate the emotional aspects of your recovery.
