Six Pack Surgery (Abdominal Etching) in Turkey

Six pack surgery is the everyday name for abdominal etching, a precision form of liposuction that deepens the natural grooves around abdominal muscles you already have. It does not build muscle and it is not a weight-loss operation. This page compares the 56 clinics in Turkey that list the procedure on Flymedi, sets their prices against UK list prices, and sets out who the procedure suits, what recovery involves and what can go wrong.

Why the same operation costs EUR 2,900 at one clinic and EUR 4,100 at another

A 40% spread inside one city is not a discount. It usually reflects a genuine difference in what you are buying, and the difference is worth finding before you compare figures.

  • How much of you is treated. Abdomen alone, abdomen plus flanks, or the full torso including chest and upper arms are three different operations at three different prices.
  • The surgeon. Experience specifically in high-definition work, and how often they perform it, moves the fee more than almost anything else.
  • Technique and equipment. Power-assisted, ultrasound-assisted and laser-assisted devices carry different costs. No device is automatically better or safer.
  • Anaesthesia and facility. A hospital theatre with an anaesthetist present costs more than a day-case clinic room. This is a safety variable, not only a price one.
  • Whether it is a revision. Correcting previous liposuction is harder, takes longer and is priced accordingly.
  • What surrounds the operation. Tests, compression garments, medicines, lymphatic drainage sessions, hotel nights, transfers and follow-up appointments are included by some clinics and charged separately by others.
  • Whether you combine procedures. Adding fat transfer, gynaecomastia correction or a tummy tuck changes theatre time, anaesthetic and price.

Ask every clinic the same question in writing: what does this figure include, and what will I be billed for separately? Your consultation is where that quote gets fixed to your anatomy and your plan.

Ask before you pay a deposit

  • Exactly which areas does this price cover: abdomen, abdomen and flanks, or the full torso?
  • What is in the price: surgeon, anaesthetist, theatre, nights of care, garment, tests, transfers?
  • Who operates, and do they hold Turkish plastic surgery specialty registration?
  • How many abdominal etching cases does that surgeon do a year?
  • What is the clinic's Ministry of Health health-tourism authorisation number?
  • What anaesthetic is planned, and who administers it?
  • How many nights of care are included, and where?
  • What is the written revision policy if the result is uneven?
  • Who handles complications once I am home?
  • What would change this quote after an in-person examination?

Turkey and the UK side by side

There is no official UK price for abdominal etching. It is a private cosmetic procedure and is not available on the NHS, so the only public figures are the list prices individual UK clinics publish. The two below are London clinics that publish a price for this specific operation, checked on 17 August 2026. Treat them as an indication of the gap, not as a quote.

Paying for your treatment

Flymedi offers instalment options that let you spread the cost of treatment over monthly payments, and clinics accept major credit and debit cards. What you can borrow, over how long, and at what rate depends on your country of residence, the provider operating in that market and an individual credit assessment.

See current payment plan terms

Current limits, terms and rates for your market are published on the payment plan page, which is the single source of truth for those figures. Finance is subject to status and eligibility.

Legal sign-off required before publication: consumer credit terms are a regulated financial promotion and the figures currently published across the site do not agree.

What abdominal etching actually is

Abdominal etching is superficial, patterned liposuction. The surgeon does not remove fat evenly. They remove it selectively along the natural anatomical lines of your abdominal wall so that the muscle underneath reads more sharply through the skin.

The technique was first described in 1993 by Mentz and colleagues, who set out the landmarks it follows: the linea alba down the midline, the linea semilunaris running down each side of the rectus abdominis, and the transverse tendinous intersections that cross the muscle horizontally 1. Those intersections are what create the visible blocks of a six-pack. Deepening the grooves over them is what the operation does.

What it does not do

Talk it through before you commit

A coordinator can put your questions to the clinic in writing before you travel, including the ones about the operating surgeon and the revision policy.

How it differs from liposuction, HD lipo and a tummy tuck

These names are used loosely by clinics and interchangeably by patients, and they are not the same operation. The distinction decides whether the procedure will work for you.

ProcedureWhat it addressesChoose it when
Abdominal etchingSuperficial fat over specific muscle lines, to reveal definitionYou are lean, train already, and want sharper definition
Conventional liposuctionDeeper fat, removed evenly to reduce bulkYou want a smaller, smoother abdomen rather than visible muscle lines
High-definition liposuctionThe broader approach that etching belongs to, often across chest, flanks and back as wellYou want whole-torso contouring, not just the abdomen
Liposuction 360Circumferential fat removal around the whole waistlineYour concern is the silhouette all the way round, including the back
Tummy tuckExcess skin, and separated or lax abdominal muscleLoose skin or abdominal wall laxity is the main problem, not fat
Gynaecomastia surgeryMale breast tissueChest tissue is the concern, sometimes combined with torso etching
Non-surgical contouringModest fat reduction without surgeryYou want a small change and no operation, accepting a smaller result

Scroll sideways for the full table

Two points that regularly cause disappointment. First, if the real problem is loose skin or a separation of the abdominal muscles after pregnancy or major weight loss, etching will not fix it and may make it look worse; a tummy tuck or a combined procedure is the relevant conversation. Second, a different device is not a different safety class. Ultrasound-assisted, power-assisted and laser-assisted systems each have their own advantages and their own risks, including thermal injury with energy-assisted devices. Brand names such as VASER describe equipment, and only mean something if the clinic you choose actually uses it and the surgeon is experienced with it.

Who abdominal etching suits

This is the section that decides most outcomes. Etching rewards people who are already close to the result and disappoints people who are using it to get there.

You will see a BMI number quoted as a cut-off on many pages. The published evidence does not support a single universal threshold: the largest review of high-definition liposuction reported an average patient BMI of 25 with a range from 18 to 38 2. What matters is not the number itself but where your fat sits, how much muscle is underneath, how your skin behaves and how stable your weight is. That is an examination finding, and it is what the consultation is for.

Women and abdominal etching

Abdominal etching is often written about as a men's procedure. The published evidence does not support that framing. In the largest systematic review of high-definition liposuction, covering 6,964 patients, 44% were women and 56% were men 2. The prospective case series most often cited on this procedure included 4 women among 25 patients 8.

What does differ is the aesthetic aim, and any surgeon planning the operation should be explicit about it. Etching in women is usually planned for a softer result: definition of the midline and the outer borders of the abdominal muscles, and a defined waist, rather than the deep horizontal grooves that produce a blocked six-pack. Fat distribution, skin behaviour and hormonal changes differ too, and pregnancy after surgery will change the abdominal wall regardless of what was done to the fat layer.

If you are considering this, ask your surgeon to show you results in patients of your sex with a similar starting build, and to describe in words what pattern they are planning on you. Photographs of a male bodybuilder tell you nothing useful about your own likely outcome.

Consultation and planning

An online assessment from photographs is a screening step. It can tell a clinic whether you are worth assessing properly. It cannot confirm candidacy, and it cannot fix a price, because neither can be judged without examining the abdominal wall in person.

Bring a written list. The questions you plan are the ones you actually ask.

What happens during the operation

Details vary between surgeons, and the steps below describe the usual shape of the procedure rather than a protocol every clinic follows.

Recovery, and how long to stay in Turkey

Recovery from etching is not the same as recovery from ordinary liposuction, because superficial work bruises more and swells in a way that hides the result for longer. The timings below are drawn from NHS guidance on liposuction recovery 3. Your surgeon may advise differently for your case, and their instructions take precedence over any general timetable.

Days 1 to 7

Soreness, bruising, swelling and tightness. You wear the compression garment more or less continuously. You walk regularly from day one to reduce clot risk. Stitches typically come out at around a week.

Weeks 1 to 2

Most people are back to desk work in this window. Bruising is fading, swelling is not. Numbness over the treated area is normal and usually settles over 6 to 8 weeks.

Weeks 3 to 4

Gentle exercise usually restarts. Lymphatic drainage massage may be prescribed. The abdomen may feel firm or lumpy as tissue remodels.

Weeks 10 to 12

Strenuous activity and heavy lifting are generally avoided until this point. Definition starts to become visible as swelling drops.

3 to 6 months

Swelling continues to resolve and the contour settles. This is when the result can fairly be judged, and when any revision conversation should happen.

Risks and complications

The best available evidence on this family of procedures is a systematic review of 21 studies covering 6,964 high-definition liposuction patients. It found an overall complication rate of 14.4%, of which 0.2% were major. The commonest problems were transient hyperpigmentation (3.8%), seroma (3.3%) and transient soft-tissue fibrosis (2.7%) 2.

How to read that: the review pooled studies that did not all report complications the same way, which its authors state as a limitation. Rates from published series performed by surgeons who specialise in this work are not a promise about any individual clinic or any individual patient.

Results, and how long they last

Fat cells removed during liposuction do not grow back. That is the reason results can be long-lasting, and it is also the reason the claim is routinely overstated.

The fat cells that remain can still enlarge. If you gain weight after etching, the fat returns, and because the distribution has been surgically altered it can return unevenly and in a pattern you did not have before. Ageing, pregnancy, changes in training, medication and shifts in skin elasticity all continue to change the abdomen. The grooves are also only as visible as the muscle beneath them: stop training and the definition softens even if your weight does not move.

Satisfaction in the published literature is high. The systematic review reported 92.6% satisfaction across the studies that measured it 2, and the 25-patient prospective series reported 96% happy or very happy at six months 8. Both figures come from patients selected and operated on by surgeons who do this work often, and the second is a small single-centre series graded level IV evidence. High satisfaction is not the same thing as surgical safety, and neither figure predicts your own result.

How to read before and after photographs

Before and after galleries are the single most persuasive thing on any cosmetic surgery website, and the easiest to mislead with. No image manipulation is needed. Lighting, posture and timing do the work.

  • Lighting. Overhead light throws shadows into abdominal grooves. The same abdomen photographed under flat, front-on light looks dramatically less defined. Compare pairs shot the same way.
  • Muscle contraction. A relaxed "before" and a braced "after" is not a surgical result. Look for the same posture in both.
  • Hydration and timing. Photographs taken after a period of dehydration or fasting exaggerate definition. Time of day matters.
  • Tan and skin tone. A tan increases apparent contrast between grooves and flat areas.
  • How long after surgery. A photograph at three months and one at three years are answering different questions. Swelling takes up to six months to settle, so an early photo understates and a well-chosen late one may overstate.
  • What else was done. If the same patient had fat transfer to the chest, gynaecomastia correction or a tummy tuck at the same time, the photograph is not showing you etching alone.
  • Whose result it is. Ask whether the surgeon who will operate on you performed the case in the photograph, not another surgeon at the same clinic.

Ask to see results from patients who started where you are starting, including at least one case that did not go perfectly. A surgeon who will discuss a revision they performed is telling you something useful about how they handle the 14% of cases with a complication.

Frequently asked questions

Answers from the medical content team, reviewed by the medical reviewer named on this page.

How much does six pack surgery cost in Turkey?
Listed prices run from EUR 2,900 to EUR 4,100 across the clinics on Flymedi, checked on 17 August 2026, and three of the ten clinics shown quote only after an enquiry. These are starting prices for the lowest scope each clinic offers. Your final figure depends on how many areas are treated and is confirmed at consultation.
How much is abdominal etching in the UK?
London clinics publish list prices from about GBP 6,500 for abdomen and flanks, rising to around GBP 9,000 for the full torso and GBP 7,300 at another clinic depending on the area treated 5 6. The procedure is cosmetic and is not available on the NHS. Compare against Turkish prices only once you know both quotes cover the same areas.
Can surgery actually give me a six-pack?
It can make the muscle definition you already have more visible. It cannot create muscle, and it cannot add anatomical blocks you do not have, because the number of visible blocks is set by your own tendinous intersections. If there is little muscle underneath, there is nothing to reveal.
Is abdominal etching the same as liposuction?
It is a form of liposuction, but not the ordinary one. Conventional liposuction removes deeper fat evenly to reduce bulk. Etching removes superficial fat selectively along marked muscle lines to create definition, which is a more technically demanding operation with a different risk profile.
Can women have abdominal etching?
Yes. In the largest systematic review of high-definition liposuction, 44% of the 6,964 patients were women 2. The planning differs: the usual aim in women is midline and waist definition rather than deep horizontal grooves. See women and abdominal etching.
Am I suitable if I have loose skin or a lot of belly fat?
Often not, and this matters more than any other candidacy question. Etching does not tighten skin, and it cannot reach the visceral fat behind the abdominal wall that makes an abdomen firm and round. If loose skin or muscle separation is the main issue, a tummy tuck is usually the relevant operation. Your surgeon will assess this by examination.
How painful is the recovery?
Expect real soreness, bruising and tightness for the first week, controlled with prescribed pain relief, and superficial work tends to bruise more than standard liposuction. Most people describe it as manageable rather than severe. Pain that escalates instead of settling is not normal and needs urgent assessment.
How long should I stay in Turkey?
Your clinic sets the minimum stay, since it depends on the extent of your surgery and whether they review you before you leave. As a floor, the NHS advises waiting 5 to 7 days after liposuction before flying 4. Confirm the number in writing before booking flights and allow a spare day or two.
When can I go back to work, drive and train?
Desk work is usually possible within one to two weeks. Gentle exercise typically restarts at around three to four weeks and strenuous training and heavy lifting are generally avoided for 10 to 12 weeks 3. Drive again only when you can perform an emergency stop without hesitating.
Are the results permanent?
The fat cells removed do not come back, but the result is not fixed for life. Remaining fat cells can enlarge if you gain weight, and the definition depends on the muscle underneath, so it softens if you stop training. Pregnancy and ageing also change the abdominal wall.
Will I have scars?
Yes, small ones. Access incisions are a few millimetres and are usually placed where they are least visible, such as the navel or along the bikini line. They typically fade substantially but they do not vanish, and anyone telling you the procedure is scarless is misdescribing it.
What if the result looks uneven?
Some asymmetry and firmness is normal while swelling settles, which takes 3 to 6 months, so the contour cannot be judged fairly before then. Contour irregularity was the pattern of complication most often reported in the published series 2. Agree your surgeon's revision policy in writing before you travel, including who bears the cost.
What support is there once I am home?
This is the question to settle before you book. Ask your clinic who reviews you remotely, how quickly they respond, and what happens if you need to be seen in person. The NHS notes that overseas clinics may not offer the same aftercare access as a UK surgeon and that travel insurance usually excludes surgical complications 4. Your Flymedi coordinator can help you get those commitments in writing before you commit.
