Reconstructive surgery repairs or rebuilds a part of the body changed by cancer treatment, injury, burns, a condition present from birth or a previous operation: breast reconstruction, skin removal after weight loss, scar revision and revision of operations that went wrong. In Turkey it is done by surgeons holding a single specialty in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, and people travel for it because of waiting lists and funding refusals at home. This page explains which reconstructive operations travel well and which do not, how the stages and follow-up work, the risks, who is not a candidate and what a Turkish quote needs to contain.
Figures are ranges, not promises. Suitability needs an individual assessment by a doctor.
Each clinic sets its own price, so check what the price includes before comparing two of them.

Reconstructive surgery is the branch of plastic surgery that restores the form and function of a part of the body that has been changed by cancer treatment, injury, burns, infection, a condition present from birth or a previous operation. Cosmetic surgery changes something that is normal; reconstructive surgery repairs something that is not. In Turkey the two sit inside one specialty, plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, so the surgeon who does facelifts also rebuilds breasts after mastectomy, revises scars and closes the defects left by skin cancer removal.
People travel to Turkey for reconstructive surgery for two reasons that are worth stating plainly. The first is waiting time: breast reconstruction, scar revision and skin removal after weight loss are funded at home in many countries but sit on long lists. The second is that home systems often refuse to fund them at all, because the loose skin after weight loss or the scar that bothers you is classed as cosmetic. This page explains which reconstructive operations travel well, which do not, what the trip actually involves and what a Turkish quote needs to contain.
Reconstructive surgery repairs or rebuilds a part of the body so that it looks and works as normally as possible after disease, injury or a previous operation. Cosmetic surgery reshapes a normal feature to change its appearance. The techniques overlap almost completely: a breast reconstruction uses the same implants as breast augmentation, a body lift after weight loss is the same operation as a body lift for a patient who was never obese, and scar revision uses the same flaps and grafts that close a wound after cancer. What differs is the aim, the starting point and who pays.
That last point drives most of the searches for reconstructive surgery abroad. Insurers and public health services fund operations they classify as reconstructive and refuse the ones they classify as cosmetic, and the line is drawn differently in every country. Skin removal after massive weight loss is the usual casualty: the skin is a consequence of a medical treatment, but the operation is often declined as cosmetic. If your operation was refused at home, the refusal letter is worth bringing, because it usually states what was assessed and why.
Several of these have their own pages: breast reconstruction, plastic surgery after weight loss, revision rhinoplasty, breast implant revision and tummy tuck revision. This page covers what they share: how reconstruction is staged, what travels and what does not.
An operation travels well when it is planned, elective, done in one or two predictable stages and followed up by examination and photographs rather than by hands-on wound care. Body contouring after weight loss, implant-based breast reconstruction, revision of a settled scar and revision of a previous cosmetic operation fit that description. Flap-based breast reconstruction using your own tissue also travels, but only to a hospital with a microsurgery team and an intensive care unit, because a failing flap has to be taken back to theatre within hours, and the stay is longer.
An operation travels badly when it is part of an ongoing treatment, when it needs repeated dressing changes by the surgical team, or when the next stage depends on how the last one heals. Reconstruction after skin cancer removal belongs with the team that removed the cancer, so that the margins are confirmed before the defect is closed. Burn contracture release in a child, cleft repair and anything needing rehabilitation and splinting for months are hospital-at-home operations. Chronic wounds and infected implants need treating, not flying.
