How Does It Work?

Chin augmentation surgeries are typically performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation - usually light anesthesia for sleep - or, when combined with other procedures, with general anesthesia.

The operation itself is a relatively simple procedure in which the doctor first makes a small incision in the skin just below the chin, and then inserts the implant, attaching it to the jaw bone to ensure stability. To complete the chin implant procedure, your doctor simply closes the incision.

The results, which will not be entirely apparent at first, will last a lifetime.

The complete chin implant procedure takes between one and two hours to complete. The incisions are placed as unobtrusively as possible, although the exact location depends on the facial structure. Some surgeons prefer to place their incisions in the mouth, also known as intraoral, while others prefer under the chin, also known as extraoral.

5.         Surgery

In chin implant surgery, the type of anesthesia is usually local, although it can be general if it is combined with other facial surgery that requires it.

A small incision is made in the mucosa of the lower lip or just in the part of the chin that is not seen. Through this incision, the implant is placed just in front of the chin. The position is checked and fixation sutures are given both inside the oral area and outside, to guarantee correct placement. Those sutures are absorbable and do not leave a scar.

What Happens After Chin Implant Surgery?

• After the surgery, it is normal for the patients to feel discomfort, they may also have small bruises and inflammation on the chin and face that after the first few days will disappear.
• After 2 weeks you can do sports, but you should practice light and moderate exercise and increase their intensity gradually.
• The treated area will be slightly inflamed for about 10 days.
• Some patients report that their chin has been numb for three months after the operation, although this is very rare.
• You will also likely be given a support brace to wear when you lie down or sleep for the first few weeks after the operation so that the implant remains in the desired position and does not begin to shift during the healing process.
• Although the results are immediate, due to the inevitable swelling that occurs after the chin implant procedure, the final result of your new chin will not be fully apparent for three to four weeks.
• If you encounter any of the following symptoms after the operation, this could indicate something potentially serious that will require you to inform your doctor:
  • Sudden swelling or discoloration of the lower face
  • Fever
  • Increased redness and/or tenderness of the wound, suggesting a possible infection.
  • Hemorrhage
  • Allergic reactions to prescribed drugs in the postoperative period.
