Laser teeth whitening is a type of dentistry procedure used to improve the color and look of teeth, with instant results. Laser teeth whitening procedures have several advantages over traditional teeth whitening procedures, including the fact that they are less intrusive and offer better results with less discomfort for the patient. • General teeth stains
  • Discoloration of the tooth due to various reasons

In general, the procedure is only recommended for patients with healthy gums and teeth who want to improve the look of their smile.

Laser teeth whitening is not recommended for patients who fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • Patients suffering from bruxism
  • Patients with decayed teeth or cavities
  • Exposed gums
  • Patients with unhealthy gums and teeth
  • Teeth with worn enamel
  • Patients with very sensitive teeth
  • Patients undergoing pregnancy
  • Patients with other types of teeth restorations such as dental crowns, fillings or veneers

Patients who want to opt for this procedure are required to have a dental checkup beforehand in order to see if laser teeth whitening is the right solution for them. The dentist may advise other treatments before undergoing this procedure. It’s also important to clarify what results can be achieved and how many sessions will be required – some patients may require multiple sessions before achieving their goal. Patients with other dental issues such as cavities will be required to treat these first before undergoing laser teeth whitening.

Laser teeth whitening starts with the isolation of gums and lips (for protection reasons) followed by the application of a special gel on the surface of teeth. The professional gel will be activated with the laser’s light, giving a whitening effect. Laser technology allows the dentist to be very precise and save the bone structure of the teeth. The operation is pain-free and it lasts around 60 minutes. If during the operation the teeth become too sensitive, the process can be continued in another session. At the end of the procedure, the patients will be able to see the effects immediately.

There is no recovery period associated with laser teeth whitening. The patients can go back to their routine activities immediately after the procedure is done.

Laser teeth whitening is a safe and painless procedure but it can have some minor risks:

  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Gums irritation or sensitivity
  • Touch-up sessions

Laser teeth whitening can have some secondary effects but they will subside in a couple of days:

  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Gums irritation or sensitivity

The secondary effects can be ameliorated by avoiding drinking or eating too hot or too cold and by using a desensitizing toothpaste.

Laser teeth whitening treatment is a very popular procedure and it has a 70% rate of success.

Patients can enjoy the benefits of laser teeth whitening for up to three years, provided that they avoid certain food, drink, or habits:

  • Excessive smoking
  • Drinking red wine, soda, certain teas, and coffee
  • Excessive fluoride use
  • Use of certain medications which can stain teeth

Patients are also required to maintain healthy oral hygiene and visit the dentist regularly after the procedure is performed. It’s also important to note that teeth do colour naturally with age.
