VASER liposuction abroad

VASER is a brand of ultrasound-assisted liposuction. The surgeon first infiltrates a fluid into the treated area, then uses an ultrasound probe to loosen the fat, and removes it through a thin cannula. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) describes assisted liposuction as liquefying the fat before it is removed; the NHS lists high-frequency vibrations among the ways surgeons break up fat cells. It is still liposuction, with the recovery and risks of an operation.

• the number and size of the areas treated: one area, a lipo 360 or abdominal definition such as six pack surgery are different operations;
• the type of anaesthesia and the number of hospital nights;
• compression garments and medicines;
• whether the quote is Treatment only or a package with hotel and transfers;
• extras: flights, extra hotel nights, follow-up at home, and a revision or second trip.

For a UK reference, the NHS gives a usual price range for liposuction in the UK that varies with the clinic and the areas treated. Ask every clinic for a written, itemised quote and compare like for like. Payment plans depend on your country of residence; see payment plans.

• Surgeon: check the surgeon's specialist registration in the destination country with the body that keeps the register, and ask how many VASER procedures they perform.
• Facility: check the clinic's licence. Accreditation such as JCI shows the hospital passed an external audit of its processes; it does not tell you about an individual surgeon.
• Device: ask whether the clinic uses a genuine VASER system, or a different ultrasound device.
• Before surgery: ask who examines you before the operation and who gives the anaesthetic.
• Aftercare: ask for a written aftercare and complication plan, and for copies of your operation note and medication list to take home.

ASPS lists the risks of liposuction as including anaesthesia risks, bruising, swelling, changes in skin sensation that may persist, fluid accumulation (seroma), infection, irregular contours or asymmetry, irregular pigmentation, poor wound healing, the need for revision surgery, deep vein thrombosis and heart or lung complications, damage to deeper structures and, with ultrasound-assisted techniques such as VASER, thermal burn or heat injury from the ultrasound. A 2024 review of 39 studies found contour irregularity the most common complication. Large volumes can also cause toxicity from the local anaesthetic (lidocaine), and fat embolism is a rare, serious risk.

Before you book, ask who treats a complication while you are abroad and after you return, what the clinic covers, and what to bring to your GP.
