Appendectomy

Appendectomyis an operation to remove the infected appendix which is an emergency condition known as appendicitis. The appendix is a small pouch that is located in the lower right side of your belly and connected to the large intestine. When the appendix becomes infected as a result of bacteria build-up, it will cause pain and unless treated, the appendix can burst.

Appendectomy Candidates

Candidates of appendectomy surgery may have following symptoms of the appendicitis:

  • Abdominal pain that starts around navel and moves to lower right abdomen
  • Loss of appetite
  • fever
  • frequent and/or painful urination
  • nausea and/or vomiting
  • diarrhea or constipation

Appendectomy Candidates

Patients with burst appendix or who have abscess may be more suitable to open appendectomy. On the other hand, older adults and patients with obesity may be more suitable for laparoscopic appendectomy.

Preparing for Appendectomy

First you will be asked about your symptoms and your abdomen will be examined. If you get a diagnosis, the surgery and instructions will be explained. Make sure that you give a list of your medical history, medicines and allergies. Also you must stop eating and drinking at least 8 hours before your surgery and avoid taking particular medications such as insulin or aspirin.

How is Appendectomy Performed?

At first, general anesthesia will be administered.

  • In open appendectomy, a cut is made in the lower right side of the abdomen to remove the appendix. If your appendix has burst, your abdomen will be washed out with a sterile fluid. Then, the incision will be closed with stitches. Also a small tube may be placed in the incision to drain out fluids.
  • In laparoscopic appendectomy, 3 or 4 small cuts are made in your abdomen. A port will be inserted and carbon dioxide gas will inflate the abdomen so that the appendix can be easily seen with a laparoscope (small tube with camera and light).Through the use of laparoscope and surgical tools, the appendix will be removed. The gas will released through the cuts and the cuts will be closed with stitches.
