Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty surgery, also known as eyelid surgery is a type of plastic surgery used by men and women from all around the world to correct certain defects, disfigurations or deformities of the eyelids. Eyelid surgery can also be used to aesthetically enhance the eyes region, giving it a more youthful appearance.

During blepharoplasty surgery, the surgeon can remove excess skin and excess fatty tissue but in the same time strengthen the muscle and tendons from the eyes region.

Eyelid Surgery Candidates

Blepharoplasty surgery or eyelid surgery is recommended for patients with loose skin in the eyes region, droopy upper eye lids, bags under their eyes or simply patients who wish to rejuvenate their facial appearance.

Am I Suitable for Eyelid Surgery?

According to an article on eyelid surgery complications, blepharoplasty is not recommended for patients suffering from one or more of the following:

● Dry eye syndrome
● Hyperthyroidism
● Detached retina
● Glaucoma
● Diabetes
● Cardiovascular disease
● Hypertension

Preparing for Eyelid Surgery

Patients should avoid smoking for at least a month before and after going in for blepharoplasty surgery. Blood thinners, herbal teas and vitamins are prohibited at least 2 weeks before the eyelid surgery. These measures are taken in order to limit potential side effects such as bruising and swelling during the blepharoplasty surgery recovery period but also to ensure the results of the procedure.

How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Blepharoplasty surgery or eyelid surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia. The surgeon will decide on the type of anesthesia used after the patient’s first examination.

Once the anesthesia kicks in, the surgeon will begin creating incisions according to the patient’s needs. Incisions are usually created in the eyelid creases in order to make them less visible after surgery – just below the lashes for the lower eyelids and in the creases of the upper eyelids.

Once the incisions are created, the surgeon begins eliminating excess skin, muscle and fatty tissue from the area. Pockets of fat under the lower eyelids can be removed through incisions made on the inside of the eyelid. Once the excess fat and skin are removed, the muscle itself can be tightened for a better effect. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures and the eyelid surgery recovery period can begin.

Eyelid Surgery FAQ

What is an Asian Blepharoplasty surgery?
Asian blepharoplasty surgery is a type of cosmetic procedure where a crease is created in the eyelid. This type of surgery is very popular among Asian patients who wish to have a more Caucasian looking appearance. The crease is created and the eyes seem to look somewhat bigger. Many patients from all around the world, especially the USA request Asian blepharoplasty surgery on a daily basis.

Can blepharoplasty surgery help reduce eye wrinkles or sagging eyebrows?
Unfortunately no, blepharoplasty surgery cannot be used as a means to remove wrinkles from the eyes region. Sagging brows or crow’s feet wrinkles require other procedures, such as a brow lift or facelift surgery.

What other procedures can be combined with blepharoplasty surgery?
The procedure can be combined with a neck liposuction, facelift surgery, brow lift or skin resurfacing treatments.

Types of Eyelid Surgery

Every eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is different, because each individual has different skin types and underlying tissue. Individuals tend to age differently as well, so patients opting for eyelid surgery have different needs and expectations – this requires a multitude of techniques in order to ensure that these expectations are met in full. Eyelid lift procedures fall into three main types of surgery, depending on the placement and type of incision applied. Here are the main types of eyelid lift procedures:

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed in order to improve functionality of the eye. With age, the upper eyelid will start to lose its elasticity and begin to droop, affecting the eyelid’s functionality and ultimately impairing vision. Activities such as writing, driving or reading are much harder for patients with droopy upper eyelids. While this procedure is very effective at correcting the eyelid’s functionality, it also provides patients with aesthetic benefits. This procedure usually lasts between one or two hours and the recovery period usually lasts between one and two weeks. The benefits of this procedure will last around eight to ten years or even more.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery is the second-most common procedure, also called a lower eyelid blepharoplasty. While upper eyelid surgery was performed in order to improve functionality of the eye, lower eyelid surgery is mostly cosmetic, with the goal of improving the appearance of the eye region. This procedure will diminish the bags under the eyes and tighten the skin underneath the eyes, removing any wrinkles. Lower eyelid surgery is recommended for patients wishing to improve the look of their eyes region. The procedure usually lasts about one or two hours, with a recovery period between 10 days up to 2 weeks. As with upper eyelid surgery, the benefits of this procedure will last around eight to ten years or more.

Combined Eyelid Surgery

The third main type of eyelid surgery is called a combined eyelid surgery or combined blepharoplasty. This procedure is used to fix any problems of both eye areas, including the lower eyelid and the upper eyelid. Combined eyelid surgery is mostly cosmetic, rejuvenating the appearance of both eye sections. When combined with a brow lift, the results tend to be more pleasing due to the fact that any wrinkles above the eyes are eliminated as well. This procedure usually lasts between one and three hours, with a total recovery period of between 10 days and 2 weeks. After the procedure is done and the recovery period is completed, patients can enjoy a more youthful appearance that lasts around eight to ten years.

While these are the three main types of eyelid surgery, other procedures can be performed for different defects or problems in the eye region, including benign cysts removal. A consultation with a professional plastic surgeon is the best way to find out which solution is better suited to fulfil your needs and expectations.
