In Vitro Fertilization, also known as IVF is a type of artificial insemination meaning that an egg is fertilized with sperm in a laboratory, outside the body, before being reinserted into the uterus. Every year, around 30.000 couples from the USA alone opt for an IVF procedure, and around 30% of them finish their first IVF cycle with live birth.
IVF is recommended for patients or couples that cannot or are having troubles in conceiving naturally. Reduced fertility or ovarian function in women over the age of 40, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, uterine fibroids, male infertility, such as low sperm count or abnormalities in sperm shape or unexplained infertility are the main reasons to start an IVF process. Same-sex couples and single individuals are also good candidates for IVF treatment.
