Gastric Band Side Effects & Risks

Like any other surgical procedure, gastric band side effects include:

  • Acid reflux
  • Anesthesia-related risks
  • Chronic nausea and vomiting
  • Dilation of esophagus
  • Inability to eat certain foods

  • Obstruction of stomach

What's The Recovery Time For Gastric Band Surgery?

After the surgery, you will spend the first night in the hospital under medical supervision to monitor your recovery. You will be under a strict fluids diet for the first few weeks, then slowly progress to soft food like puree before returning to solid food.

Your doctor will recommend you visit a dietitian to discuss your lifestyle changes to reach your weight loss goals. The diet plan will include an exercise plan and food choices you should make.

You will need to attend a follow-up appointment to adjust the band. It is common for the gastric band to be adjusted 4 - 6 times in the first year. You can expect to experience recovery and get back to your daily routine after two weeks.

Gastric Band Success Rate:

On average, you can expect to lose 50% of your weight following gastric band surgery within the first two years.

Gastric Band Alternative Treatments

  • Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (Non-invasive alternative)

How Does Gastric Band Surgery Work?

The surgeon places the band around the upper portion of the stomach and attaches a tube to the band. The tube is accessible through a port under the skin of the abdomen.

The surgeon injects a saline solution into the band to inflate it using this port. Adjustments can alter the degree of constriction around the stomach. The band creates a small stomach pouch above it, with the rest of the stomach below.

Having a smaller stomach pouch reduces the amount of food that the stomach can hold. The result is an increased feeling of fullness after eating a smaller amount of food.

What Gastric Band Involve?

We will plan and arrange the procedure to suit your preferences and needs and match you with the best gastric band surgeon available in Turkey. There are a few primary steps involved in this procedure. Here is what you can expect:

1. Final consultation with your specialist

When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with the specialist. During this session, you are expected to inform the surgeon about your medical record, allergies, and if you're currently taking any medication. The surgeon will discuss the treatment plan and best approach that fits your condition.

2. Examination before the surgery

After sharing with your surgeon your medical record, you must go through some medical tests. Afterward, you will discuss the procedure in detail.

3. Anesthesia Stage

Planning anesthesia for gastric band surgery differs from one patient to another. The gastric band surgery anesthesia considers the psychological changes caused by obesity.

Besides, the pre-anesthetic approach depends on the nature of the anticipated procedure and anticipated recovery from surgery and anesthesia.

4. During the Surgery

The procedure is minimally invasive, and it's performed through keyhole incisions. The surgeon makes between one and five minor surgical cuts in the abdomen. Surgery is carried out using a laparoscope, a long narrow tube with a camera.

What Should I Expect After Gastric Band Treatment?

  • You will need to spend one night at the hospital to monitor your recovery
  • For the first few weeks, you will be on a strict diet and allowed to eat only fluids.
  • From 4 - 6 weeks, you will be allowed to expand your food option to soft food, mostly pureed.
  • After the sixth week, you will progress to solid food.
  • You can return to work and daily routine within two days after the surgery.
  • Follow up with your doctor to track your recovery progress
  • Follow up with your dietitian for your weight loss plan

Things You Should Consider Before Gastric Band Surgery?

  • A week before the procedure, you should stop taking Aspirin and any other medication that causes blood thinning.
  • If you are allergic to any drugs, you should inform your surgeon as soon as possible.
  • Avoid smoking before the surgery.
  • Consuming any alcoholic beverages can affect anesthesia. So it would be best if you did not take in anything alcoholic before surgery.
  • Follow your doctor-prescribed medication that adjusts your current medicines.
  • The patient should not eat from midnight before the day of the surgery. Most people can resume most normal activities within two days, but they may need to take a week's leave from work.

Ana was extremely helpful, friendly and made planning my trip so much easier. I don't know what I would have done without her! Going overseas to a country you've never been to before to get plastic surgery can be scary, having Ana made it a lot less scary knowing you have somebody there that's on your team to help you.
