Segmental mastectomy (partial mastectomy or lumpectomy) is a type of mastectomy procedure that removes the only breast cancer and the tissue around it without intervening the look of the breast. Because it lets breasts mostly intact, it cannot be considered as a breast removal surgery.
Recommendation of segmental mastectomy is to patients that are in the early stages of development of breast cancer. If the breast cancer spread through to the breast, then professionals cannot perform partial mastectomy and need to use radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or modified radical mastectomy.
