Vaginoplasty is a type of plastic surgery, usually done for cosmetic as well as functional reasons. Vaginoplasty surgery can change the vulvovaginal structures, the vaginal canal and surrounding muscle tissue.

Vaginal rejuvenation is also referred to as cosmetic vaginal surgery, aesthetic vaginal surgery or simply vaginoplasty surgery – these procedures usually aim to strengthen the functions of the vaginal area and in the same time reshaping it for a more youthful appearance. Vaginoplasty surgery is also referred to as a “face lift” for the vagina and vulva region.

Vaginal rejuvenation is generally seen as a type of plastic surgery made up out of two distinct procedures:

● Vaginoplasty surgery – This procedure refers to the surgery in which excess tissue from the vaginal lining is removed and the surrounding tissue is tightened.
Labiaplasty surgery – This procedure refers to a cosmetic genital enhancement through the reduction of the labia minora. The shape of the labia can also be changed to a more pleasing form.

The vaginoplasty procedure is usually done for functional reasons while labiaplasty surgery is done for aesthetic reasons.

Vaginoplasty Candidates

Vaginoplasty surgery or vaginal rejuvenation surgery is recommended for women suffering from:

● Congenital diseases such as vaginal hypoplasia
● Physical trauma related to giving birth
● Cancer
● Chronic labial irritation from tight clothing, sports or sex

Trans women can also benefit from a vaginoplasty procedure, as part of their sex transition.

Am I Suitable for Vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty surgery is not recommended for women suffering from active gynaecological diseases such as malignancies or infections. Patients should not have this procedure done while menstruating – sometimes it’s best to simply wait. Women planning to have children soon should wait before going in for vaginoplasty surgery as well.

Preparing for Vaginoplasty

Patients need to stop smoking at least a month before and after the procedure. Women should have a thorough gynaecological examination to check for any signs of infection or disease. Planning for the procedure is as important as the procedure itself. The patient’s menstrual cycle needs to take place at least a week before vaginoplasty surgery. The menstrual cycle can increase the chance of developing complications following the vaginoplasty procedure.

Patients need to refrain from taking any blood thinners such as aspirin at least 2 weeks before the vaginoplasty procedure. Anti-inflammatory drugs, herbal teas, green teas and Omega 3 capsules are also forbidden.

How is Vaginoplasty Performed?

The vaginoplasty procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Once the anaesthesia kicks in, the surgeon will begin effectively tightening the vaginal walls by removing excess external tissue. The supportive muscle and tissue of the vulvovaginal structure are also tightened at this point. Once the appropriate amount of tissue is removed from the vaginal lining and the muscles are tightened and repositioned, the surgeon will begin closing the incisions with dissolving stitches. The procedure lasts around an hour – the patient will enjoy a much narrower vaginal canal and tighter vaginal muscles. The vaginoplasty recovery period can begin.
