All You Have to Know About Mommy Makeover?

For most women, pregnancy means back pains and morning sickness. What is supposed to be a celebratory occasion descends into an unpleasant moment right up to one’s due date. As each month passes, the pregnant woman’s physical appearance and mental wellbeing tend to flip back and forth.

Whether it’s a first, second or third, pregnancy does things to the body —the abdominal wall is stretched resulting in a sagging tummy, breasts become droopy and sometimes the skin laxity of the abdomen increases. To counter these unwanted changes, most women undergo a mommy makeover.

Mommy makeover is a lovely term that refers to a package of plastic surgeries that are designed to restore or improve a woman’s post-childbearing physique. The term is somehow misleading in the sense that implies that the patient is a mother, but in truth, any woman can undergo procedures in the mommy makeover.

In the mid-90s, mommy makeover was considered to a taboo, but since the turn of the century, there has been an upswing in the number of women who opt for a mommy makeover. Due to technological advancement in medical facilities, mommy makeover has now become safer and effective.

If you are somehow feeling “blah” after pregnancy, you might as well consider having a mommy makeover, and this article will walk you through everything you need to know before you even book a consultation.

Why is Mommy Makeover Done?

The primary goal of the mommy makeover surgery is to restore and improve the shape and appearance of a woman’s body following childbirth. These improvements can be done in many areas of the body such as the breasts, buttocks, waist, abdomen, and genitalia. There are many techniques used to perform this surgery, but the mommy makeover surgery is typically performed as a single-stage procedure. When choosing the right techniques to use, these are three factors taken into consideration:

  • Type of implant used.
  • The desired amount of restoration
  • Incisions placement

What Includes Mommy Makeover?

As indicated above, a mommy makeover is a combination of multiple cosmetic procedures that restore post-procedure bodies. Surgeries that make a mommy makeover include:

Breast Augmentation / Breast Lift

Childbirth and breastfeeding can change the physical appearance of a woman’s breast. As part of the mommy makeover procedures, breast augmentation or ‘boob job’ can enhance the female’s breast size and shape. If the breasts are saggy, then the patient will require a breast lift. From a cosmetic point of view, a mommy makeover can really give the most attractive breast profile which is youthful in appearance.

Tummy tuck

Also known as Abdominoplasty, tummy tuck is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the world. The surgery involves removing unwanted excess skin or fatty tissues from the abdomen so as to make the tummy thinner, flat, and more firm. In most instances, a tummy truck restores the abdominal muscles that might have separated or weakened during pregnancy.

There is a general misconception around the tummy tuck surgery as many people think of it as a weight-loss procedure than a cosmetic operation meant to contour the body. Not every woman qualifies as an ideal candidate for the tummy tuck surgery unless they do not plan on having any more children.

What Is Vaginoplasty?

This is a reconstructive cosmetic procedure that aims to tighten the vaginal canal after childbirth. Vaginoplasty comes with several advantages. One of the greatest benefits of this surgery is increased sensitivity during sexual intercourse. Vaginoplasty can help couples to enjoy intimacy just like they did before they had children.

What Is Labiaplasty?

The shape, size, and color of the labia can be affected after pregnancy —and this where labiaplasty comes in. This procedure alters the inner and outer labia. Although it can be done for medical reasons, labiaplasty is regarded as a cosmetic procedure in the mommy makeover package.

Mommy Makeover preparation!

In most cases, a mommy makeover procedure is performed in an ambulatory surgery setting or in a hospital. The duration of the surgery varies from one patient to the other and patients are given general anesthesia as part of the surgery.

With that said, as you prepare for the mommy makeover surgery, you may be asked to do the following:

  • Stop smoking and drinking any alcoholic liquor
  • Go for medical evaluation
  • Start taking certain meds or to alter your current meds.
  • Avoid taking herbal supplements, Aspirin, and anti-inflammatory drugs two weeks prior to the surgery.

What Should You Ask the Doctor Before the Procedure?

Before you let any surgeon lay your hands on you, you have to be sure that the doctor is experienced and certified. During your first consultation, ask the surgeon the following questions:

  • Which national board-certified you?
  • Were you trained to specifically perform plastic surgery procedures?
  • How many years of plastic surgery training or experience do you have?
  • What specific training do you have in mommy makeover procedures?
  • Have you performed any of the mommy makeover procedures at any other hospital? If so, which hospitals?
  • What makes you think that I am an ideal candidate for this surgery?
  • Is there anything on my part that I should do to ensure that I get the desired results?
  • Where and how do you intend to perform the surgery?
  • Is there a specific surgical technique you recommend for me?
  • What is the duration of the recovery period, and what kind of assistance will I require during this period?
  • What are the possible risk and side effects associated with the surgery?
  • In case of any complications, how are they handled?
  • Suppose I’m not satisfied by the outcome, what are my options?
  • Do you have before-and-after photos of your previous patients that had this surgery? Can I see them?
  • What are the reasonable results for me?

What Will Happen After the Procedure?

Soon after the procedure, bandages will be applied to your incisions and you will be moved from the operation room to the next room where you will be closely monitored. Your breasts will be supported by a support bra so as to minimize swelling. In the area around the abdomen, waist, and buttocks, swelling will be controlled by a compression garment

You are more likely to spend two days at the hospital before being discharged. In case of any pain or discomfort, of which it's rare, your surgeon will prescribe painkillers for you.

Most patients think that the mommy makeover results are apparent, and they usually like to look at themselves in the mirror immediately after the surgery. But results can be noticeable after several months.

Scar line will begin to fade, although not completely, in a couple of months and the implants will begin to settle. When it comes to the surgery and the practice of medicine, results may vary from one person to the other as some patients will need more than one surgery to achieve optimal results.

It’s important that you follow the specific instructions given by your surgeon so as to achieve the desired outcome.

What Will Happen in the Recovery Time?

As soon as you are discharged, the process of recovery begins and it is bound to last for several weeks. The exact amount of time you need to completely recover is determined by the complexity of the surgery and how careful you follow your surgeon’s post-surgery instructions.
