CT Scan is a very common medical procedure that is used to identify injuries and diseases. CT stands for Computed Tomography and is comprised of numerous X-ray photographs compiled together in order to give a detailed picture of one’s body or body parts. CT scan is one of the main techniques to identify tumors and injuries, but it is not a recommended procedure for healthy patients just to look for undiagnosed medical conditions.

Usually, the CT scan with contrast is performed to recognize better the anomalies. The most common types of CT scans are:

• Abdominal CT scan

• Heart CT scan

 • CT scan of the brain

Patients who experienced injuries as a result of accidents are the main candidates for a CT scan. Also, for patients who are thought to be suffering from cancer, CT can be performed to locate the tumor.

A CT scan involves a very small amount of radiation. Therefore, it is thought to be a relatively safe procedure. However, pregnant women should inform their doctors since the radiation may cause harm to the fetus.

How long should you stay in the hospital after the surgery?

Overnight stay is not required.

The length of a CT procedure depends on the size of the area being scanned, but it usually lasts only a few minutes to half an hour.

Outpatient procedure

Before the procedure, you should inform your doctor about your medical conditions as well as the allergies you are suffering from(usually the CT scan with contrast is performed – a dye may cause allergy). Before the CT scan, you need to fast for several hours so that a dye can be used to improve the quality of the CT. Lastly, before entering the CT scanner, you need to take away all the metal objects in your body, such as jewelry. During the procedure, wearing a gown might be required.

CT scan procedure is a very short medical procedure. Patients would be lying on the CT scanner’s examination table as the dye is given to them either in the form of a pill or injection (unless the patient is allergic to the dye). Sedatives would be given to patients who experience anxiety or those who have trouble staying still, including younger children. After that, the patient needs to stay still as the CT scan is being performed. When the procedure is completed, the patient can leave the hospital.

CT scan procedure does not require a recovery period. After the procedure, you can leave the hospital and continue your daily routine.

Even though the CT scan machine involves a small dose of radiation, there is not enough proof for stating that it causes any complications regarding the radiation. However, it is not suggested that pregnant women have a CT scan. Some people may have an allergy to the dye used in a CAT scan, but this is usually ruled out before the procedure.

CT scan procedure has no known side effects. It is thought to be a very safe medical procedure.

CT scan is a very common medical procedure because of its benefits like identifying tumors in addition to injuries caused by accidents

Because of the CT scan, doctors can identify the medical problems patients are suffering from, and they can come up with a treatment plan accordingly.

What Does CT stand for in a CT scan?

CT is short for computed tomography. A CT scan involves a sequence of X-ray photographs in order to provide a clear image of the patient’s organs, blood vessels, and bones.

Can a CT scan Detect Cancer?

It may detect anomalies thought to be Cancer. Initially, doctors identify Cancer by medical examination and medical tests; afterward, CT is performed to locate Cancer.

CT scan vs. MRI – What Is Better for Me?

While a CT scan involves X-rays, there are magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses in the MRI scan. Some doctors believe that MRI scan results are more accurate than CT scan results, but it remains controversial.
