The term LASIK is an acronym for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. Lasik surgery is the most common surgery when it comes to treating myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
Just like other types of refractive surgery, the LASIK procedure reshapes the cornea so as to enable the light that comes into contact with the eye to properly focus on the retina for clearer vision. This surgery is essentially pain-free and takes only about 15 minutes to complete.
It’s well-known that having vision problems can cause a lot of challenges in life. So if you have eye problems that can cause you to be nearsighted, farsighted, and astigmatism, then you should really consider having LASIK surgery.
When preparing to perform LASIK surgery, your doctor will begin by giving you some pain-numbing eye drops. This surgery doesn’t involve any type of anesthesia.
We understand that every patient is different, so we carefully plan your trip to suit your preferences, goals, and expectations. Here are some of the stages you should expect when you choose to have LASIK Eye surgery:
As mentioned earlier, the procedure does not involve anesthesia, your eyes will be numbed using eye drops. The eye drops are effective and they tend to last for an hour.
After your eyedrops are done, a vacuum device will be placed on your eye to open it and hold it in an open position. Probably, you will be aware of the sensation of this process but since your eyes will be numb, you won’t feel any pain or discomfort.
Then your doctor will ask you to focus on the laser or light and keep your eyes steady. Then the doctor will create the flap by using precision instruments. During this process, your vision will be blurred or even faded completely but it will return to normal when the flap is created.
After your doctor has created the flap, he/she will remove the tissue from the cornea to create a new shape, with an excimer laser. The amount of tissue removed will be based on your pre-op consultation.
After the reshaping process of the cornea is done, your doctor will carefully replace the flap and then the journey to recovery begins.
Right after the surgery, you may feel temporary discomfort and itching.
You should also expect blurry vision immediately after the surgery.
You should avoid rubbing your eyes for 6 weeks following the surgery.
If your eyes are very itchy, you can inform your doctor and he/she can prescribe an anti-itch medication if necessary.
You should rest your eyes after the surgery, it’s better to keep them close.
You shouldn’t look at light emitters such as mobile phone, computers,s or TV for 24 hours.
You can take a shower the day after surgery, but you should keep your eyes closed. It is important to avoid water spraying directly into your face and you should also avoid soap and shampoo from your eyes for one week after the surgery.
You will visit your doctor within the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery and your doctor will remove the eye shield, test your vision and examine your eye.
You may also be given one or more types of eye drops to help prevent infection and/or inflammation.
It may also be advisable to use artificial tears to prevent dry eyes. After this visit, you should see your doctor regularly for at least six months.
A week before the procedure, you should stop taking Aspirin and any other meds associated with blood thinning.
If you are allergic to any drugs, you should inform your surgeon as soon as possible.
Patients are advised to avoid smoking 24 hours before the surgery.
Consuming any alcoholic beverages can affect anesthesia. So you should not take in anything alcoholic 24 hours prior to surgery.
If you are taking meds for chronic or acute diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, you should inform your surgeon before the surgery commences.
