Today, beard transplantation has become a procedure that is almost as popular as a hair transplant. As the beard became more essential to men (and women alike), interest in the beard transplant increased and the procedure is now regarded as the most effective way to eliminate beard problems. The procedure is simply the process of transplanting hair from the scalp or other areas, such as under the chin, into the empty, missing or patchy beard regions. This can be done using the FUE or FUT technique.

Who Is This For?

  • Men who desire to have a thick, full beard
  • Men who suffer from beard hair loss or patchy beards with enough donor hair

Treatment Duration

2-5 hours

Potential Risks & Side Effects

  •  Infections
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Bleeding
  •  Itching and swelling
  •  Inflammation of hair follicles (folliculitis)

Recovery Time

After six days, patients can continue moderate exercise, such as weight lifting. They can resume their swimming exercises 10 days after the procedure. On the sixth day, they can start washing their faces normally. They will be able to return to work 1-2 days after the beard transplant procedure. And they can start shaving eight days after the procedure.

Success Rate: 90-95%

Alternative Treatments

  •  Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
  •  Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)

Before / After

Beard Transplant at Lifemed Medical Center

How Does it Work?

Surgeons will mostly likely use the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique with local anesthesia, just as they do when performing a hair transplant. The surgeon will harvest hair follicles from the donor area and then implant them into a patchy beard area. If you don’t have sufficient hair in your donor area, the surgeon can also take follicles from other areas such as your chest.

For your online consultation, we will kindly ask you to send your photos as shown in the Photography Guide down below, so we can evaluate your case.

What Does a Beard Transplant Surgery Involve?

Each and every beard transplant the procedure is customized according to every patient’s needs, preferences, and the clinic’s practices. To help you better understand, here is the beard transplant step-by-step guide:

1.     Preparation

First things first, an online consultation (between you and a Beard Transplant specialist) will be scheduled –this is done in order to make sure that you’re a suitable candidate for the beard transplant surgery. You will be asked to send some pictures of your face and head (from the front, left, and right sides of the face, under the chin, and back of the head). After a Hair Transplant specialists reviews your pictures, you will be told the approximate number of grafts that you need. During the online consultations, expect the following questions:

  • Have you ever had a beard transplant before?
  •  Do you have any medical conditions that we should be aware of?
  • Are you currently taking any medication?
  • What do you expect from the beard transplant surgery?

2.     Planning your trip and choosing the right clinic

When you decide to have a beard transplant, our first step will be to present to you several detailed options of clinics and doctors. After you have chosen your preferred clinic and doctor, we will then set up an operation date and arrange your trip. All the dates are set according to your preferences!

We recommend that you arrive in Turkey a day before the surgery, so that you can have enough time to rest.

3.     Final consultation with your surgeon

When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with your beard transplant surgeon. Part of the discussions will be about your expectations and goals. After this, the surgeon will make an illustration of what to expect by drawing marks on your new beard line.

4.     Medical Examinations

Before the surgery commences, your surgeon will examine your overall health state by making different tests such as physical and blood tests. When the tests results are known, your final surgery preparation will begin.

5.     Preparation for surgery

As part of your final surgery preparations, your surgeon will give you local anesthesia. This is done so that you don’t feel any sort of pain or discomfort during the procedure. If your surgeon decides to use the FUE technique, the donor area will be shaved down. Suppose you have Trypanophobia (fear of needles), you will have to let us know during the first consultation so that we get you a doctor who can make anesthesia without using needles.

6.     FUE beard transplant surgery

Once the anesthesia kicks in, the surgery will commence. Your surgeon will extract hair follicles one-by-one using microblade and micro punches. All extracted hair follicles will be stored in a container that has a special solution that keeps the grafts alive.

Depending on the amount of hair follicles to be transplanted, it usually takes between 3 and 8 hours to complete the surgery.

7.     Post-surgery check-up

A day after the surgery, you will meet with your surgeon for a post-op review, and it is during this session that the surgeon will give you some guidelines to follow during the recovery period.

What to Expect After a Beard Transplant Procedure

  •  In the first 3-4 days after the surgery, treatment marks will still be visible on your beard area. But the good part is that you can start to do your daily routines during this period.
  • You are advised not to wash your beard area in the first 5 days after the surgery. This also means that you should also avoid the rain.
  • Expect most of the transplanted hair to shed off during the second and third week.
  • If the procedure is performed using the FUE technique, your surgeon won’t use a surgical suture, but if it’s carried out using FUT method you can expect the use of absorbable sutures.
  • It is normal to feel numb or have a tingling sensation on the treated area for several weeks.
  • You can expect to see some results after 2 or 3 months, but you are advised to start shaving your beard 6 months post-surgery.

Things You Should do Before Surgery

  • A week prior to the surgery, you should stop taking Aspirin or any other blood thinners.
  • If you are allergic to any drugs, you should inform your surgeon before the surgery begins.
  • 24 hours before the surgery, you should avoid smoking because it might lengthen your recovery period.
  • Any alcoholic beverages should be avoided 24 hours before the surgery. Anesthesia doesn’t well with alcohol.
  • If you are taking medication for chronic or acute diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, you should inform your surgeon as soon as possible.

Is Beard Transplant Painful?

You may feel a little bit of some discomfort after the procedure. But it’s nothing that can’t be handled by painkillers.

Does Beard Transplant Leave a Scar?

If a beard transplant is performed correctly and carefully, there will be little to no apparent scarring. We always recommend Hair Transplant specialists who know how to minimize scarring.

Are the Beard Transplant Results Permanent?

Yes, beard transplant results last for a lifetime. This is the reason why this procedure is regarded as an effective remedy for beard loss or patchy beards.

Great Experience With Flymedi and Medicana (Istanbul). Flymedi was overall a great company to deal with. From the very start, I was provided with a Whatsapp contact number that was extremely responsive to all my queries. This attentiveness was continued throughout the process and even after during recovery. All in all, was a good experience and I would recommend both FlyMedi's service and Medicana to my friends. Will Be using this service again in the future
