Eyelid Surgery: Before and After

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Sometimes referred to as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is a procedure that is designed to give the eyes a refreshed youthful appearance by removing excess skin or fat tissues on the upper or lower eyelid. Diminishing of eyelids as one age is inevitable; fortunately, it can be addressed and further delayed through blepharoplasty.

Today, blepharoplasty has two sophisticated techniques used to perform, and it is a surgery performed using technologically advanced equipment. One technique is for the upper eyelid, and the other one is meant for the lower eyelid. Of course, the techniques differ in terms of how they performed, and they also serve different purposes, but the ultimate goal is alike.

Before the surgery

During the first consultation with your surgeon, you will be given a list of instructions to follow before the day of the surgery. Following these instructions is as important as the surgery itself, and it can also contribute to the success of the surgery. Whether you have your surgery in Turkey or anywhere else, you can expect to be given these instructions by your surgery prior to the surgery:

• Avoid smoking two weeks before the surgery day. Tobacco and Nicotine are two substances that can lengthen the healing process.
• Any medication that contains Ibuprofen, Aspirin, or Vitamin E should not be taken two weeks prior to the surgery day.
• Always wear a sunhat or sunglasses so as to avoid exposing your eyes to the sun. This should be done for at least a week before the surgery.
• The midnight before the surgery, patients should not eat or drink anything.

 

 

How is the eyelid surgery performed?

It takes about 60 to 75 minutes for a surgeon to complete the eyelid surgery. This means that once the surgery is done, the patient will return back home. Depending on the type of eyelid surgery being performed, the patient will either be given local or general anesthesia so as to avoid any sort of pain during the surgery.

In most cases, lower and upper blepharoplasty is performed during the same surgery, and in such instances, patients are given IV sedation instead of local anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has kicked in, here is how eyelid surgery is performed:

Upper eyelid surgery: this type of eyelid surgery is usually done so as to remove excess skin that comes with aging, or to drain fat tissues that cause upper eyelids to be baggy. When performing this surgery, your surgeon will make incisions in the natural creases within the eyelids. Loose skin or fat tissues will be removed from the eye through the incisions made. All this will be done with the patient, not feeling anything. Generally speaking, your eyelid skin is very delicate, and this means that your surgeon will have to take extra caution so as to avoid scarring.

Lower eyelid surgery: Unlike the upper eyelid surgery, lower blepharoplasty can be performed using two different techniques. The first approach is to make incisions in the lower eyelid —fat tissues that have accumulated in that area are then drained out. The other approach would require your surgeon to make incisions along the lash line of the lower eyelid —and the excess or loose skin is then trimmed. As you can see, the first approach is used to remove fat tissues and the second approach is for baggy eyes that are caused by excess skin. As different as the two techniques can be, the end goal is the same: give the eye and the area around it a rejuvenated, youthful look.

 

After the surgery

Soon after the surgery is completed, you will be moved to a different room for close monitoring. This process will only take 60 minutes or less. In case of any pain or discomfort, which is normally rare, your surgeon will give you painkillers.

As mentioned earlier, eyelids have delicate skin, and this makes the eyelids to heal swiftly. You will be given yet another list of instructions by your surgeon, and this list makes look like this:

• Wear dark-tinted sunglasses wherever you go outside so as to protect your eyes from the sun or wind.
• After a week, remove the stitches. Do not worry, you won’t feel any pain and the pain are so easy to remove.
• Avoid taking alcohol or smoking for a period of one week after the surgery.
• Be very gentle when you are cleaning the area around your eyelids.
• Don’t rub your eyes.
• Don’t swim
• Keep your elevated when sleeping. You should use several pillows.
