Just last month, Instagram banned cosmetic surgery filters. Every effect that made people look like they have had lip fillers, facelift or botox were among the banned.

According to Instagram, app owned by Facebook, the decision to ban was aimed at promoting self wellbeing and reducing mental health concerns. This follows after various studies concluded that face-changing filters made people feel worse about their facial appearance.

Speaking to Insider reporters, Facebook’s spokesperson said the Instagram was “re-evaluating its policies,” because they want Instagram’s Augmented Reality effects to be “a positive experience for people.”

Keen to enhance user experience on the application, in August 2019, Instagram introduced an update that allows developers or rather users to create and submit their preferred face filters using Spark AR Studios. If submitted, those filters were then added into the app’s Effects Gallery and used by other users.

Among the submitted cosmetic filters were: Perfect Skin, Holybucks and Beautiful Face. Although most of the cosmetic filters have already been removed, some, like “Bad Botox” are yet to be pulled down.

Social Media Influence People to Have Cosmetic Surgery

Who doesn't know that we are living in a selfie-obsessed world? People are now constantly picturing everything they do – weddings, outings, picnics, work meetings and so on. Google reports that more than 24 billion selfies were uploaded in 2016, the first year of Google Photo.

Nowadays, it’s no secret that social media has pressured people to have fillers, Botox and other procedures. This is probably the reason why Social Media platforms such as Instagram, SnapChat and Facebook have become a marketplace for cosmetic procedures –where surgeons showcase their before-and-afters.

Despite the cosmetic surgery filters ban on Instagram, people go for cosmetic surgery so as to look better in their Social Media posts.

Why do People Prefer Cosmetic Surgery?

There are many reasons behind people’s preference of cosmetic surgery. Some want to have a youthful appearance, while others want to enhance their facial appearance by correcting a feature they don’t like.

Whatever the case may be, the decision is absolutely personal. However, one has to have realistic expectations. The hard, cold truth is that cosmetic surgery won’t make you look like someone else, but it can help boost your self-confidence.

Below are some of the reasons that have driven the people’s desire for cosmetic surgery:

More screen time

Nowadays, people spend a good chunk of time with their eyes glued on their smartphone. According to a research conducted using RescueTime, people generally an average of three hours and 15 minutes on their smartphones on a daily basis.

The point here is, cell phones, social media platforms and selfies have greatly prompted people to desire to get cosmetic surgery. This report suggests that 95 million photos and videos are shared on Instagram every day. Because of this, people constantly scrutinize themselves and they like to be good in front of the camera.

More affordability

In the not-so-distant past, cosmetic plastic surgery was only reserved for the affluent –especially those Hollywood celebrities. For ordinary citizens, plastic surgery was regarded as luxurious or unimaginable.

But today, many plastic surgeons can confirm that their most common patient is a middle-class working professional who is not rich. There also has been an uprising number of stay-at-home moms opting for the mommy makeover –we are talking about ordinary mothers here, not the stereotypical Beverly Hills housewives.

Whether it’s a surgical or nonsurgical, cosmetic procedures have become more affordable, especially in countries like Turkey where there is a low cost of living and dozens of hospitals offering cosmetic surgery services.

Having more payment options has also made more people consider undergoing plastic surgery. From payment plans, medical credit cards and personal loans offered by some hospitals, people now can’t use being “pricey” as an excuse for not having cosmetic surgery.

More technological advances

We are in the digital age, everything is being technologized. In the medical department, technology has been a total game-changer.

Devices and equipment used in cosmetic procedures is technologically advanced –and this has made more procedures to become safer, effective and more reliable.

15 years ago, lasers didn’t exist. And during that period, Botox was the only line-smoothing neurotoxin available. But now, three more options are on the market –thanks to more technological advancements.

Knowing that the procedures are more safe, people are now not scared of having cosmetic surgery.

More health benefits

Many at times, cosmetic surgeries are seen as a way of enhancing one’s appearance. But, the fact that plastic surgery can benefit one’s health is often ignored.

Let’s take Botox for instance, although it is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, this drug has helped people who suffer from chronic migraines, muscular disorders, major depression, excessive sweating, bladder and bowel disorders.

Many women who have undergone breast reduction consider it as an antidote for either disc or back problems. We all know that morbid obesity comes with certain dangers to health – Liposuction can help treat this condition.

More self-confidence

9 out of 10 people who have cosmetic treatment are driven by the need to improve self-esteem or boost self-confidence. This reason is consistent across both nonsurgical and surgical procedures.

We might have different ways of doing it, but everyone wants to present the version of themselves to the world.

Well after all has been said and done, it’s important that you take your time when deciding about any physical alterations of your body. Always consult an expert surgeon – we can help you with that – and remember, be wary of people who pressurize you into having any cosmetic surgery.
