Canthoplasty surgery, also known as lateral canthoplasty or eyelid lift surgery is a type of cosmetic procedure usually performed in order to improve the aesthetic appearance of the eyes region.
Canthoplasty surgery can correct sagging, drooping or bagginess of the lower eyelids. Some individuals may be born with drooping lower eye lids but lower eyelid droopiness can also be caused by the natural aging process – the skin becomes less elastic after a certain age and small bags begin to develop under the lower eyelids. Sun exposure can also lead to drooping and sagging of the lower eye lids. Patients are usually left with a tired looking face. The primary goal of canthoplasty surgery is to remove any bags from under the eyes and rejuvenate the face of the patient. This procedure is also known as lower eye lift surgery.
Canthoplasty surgery is recommended for patients with droopy or saggy lower eye lids. The procedure is also recommended for patients with baggy lower eye lids or simply patients who wish to rejuvenate their appearance.
Canthoplasty surgery, also known as lower eye lift surgery is not recommended for patients suffering from one or more of the following:
● Cardiovascular disease
● Detached retina
Patients are required to stop smoking for at least 3 weeks before and after the canthoplasty surgery. Oral supplements, herbal teas and blood thinners such as aspirin need to be avoided for at least 2 weeks before canthoplasty surgery. Alcohol consumption is prohibited for at least 48 hours before and after the lower eye lift surgery.
Canthoplasty surgery can be performed either under local anaesthesia with sedation or under general anaesthesia. The surgeon will discuss these options with the patient and decide on the best approach.
Once the patient is under anaesthesia, the surgeon will begin marking the incision spots. The incisions are usually created in a crease located at the corner of the eye, so it can remain hidden.
A thin plastic shield is placed in order to protect the patient’s eyeball. Canthoplasty surgery varies from patient to patient but usually the lower canthal tendon is cut, then repositioned and tightened in order to achieve a more pleasing aesthetic effect. Once the procedure is over, the plastic shield is removed and the incisions are carefully closed. Bandages are applied on the area to prevent infection.
Local or General anesthetic
Usually overnight stay is not required
1 to 3 hours
The canthoplasty surgery recovery period usually lasts around 2 weeks. If normal stitches are used, they will be removed in around a week after the procedure. If dissolving stitches are used, they don’t need to be removed. Patients can return to work and normal activities in around a week after the canthoplasty surgery. Eye drops can be used in order to keep the eyes moist. Patients will be provided with a special type of gel that can be used to keep the eyes region clean.
Makeup should be avoided for at least a week after the canthoplasty surgery. Patients can also use cold compresses to help reduce swelling during the canthoplasty recovery period.
Canthoplasty surgery complications can include:
● Allergic reaction to anaesthesia
● Canthoplasty revision surgery
Canthoplasty surgery side effects can include:
● Dry eyes
● Increase in sensitivity to light
● Teary and itching eyes
● Nausea and vomiting
● Blurred vision
The average canthoplasty surgery success rate is over 90%.
The procedure’s results are visible immediately. After canthoplasty surgery, patients can enjoy a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. The patient’s eyes will be bigger and any droopiness or sagginess will be a thing of the past. These results usually last anywhere between 10 and 15 years – some patients opt for revision surgery during or after this period.
