Which procedure matches your concern?

Most people arrive with a concern rather than a procedure name, and the commonest planning mistake is asking for the wrong operation. These are the four distinctions surgeons draw first.

Loose skin or localised fat

Liposuction or a lift procedure

Liposuction removes fat. It does not tighten skin, and on skin that has already lost its elasticity it can make looseness more obvious rather than less.

Where the problem is excess skin, the answer is an excisional operation such as a tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift, which trades a longer scar for skin removal. Pinch the area: if what you are holding is mostly loose skin, liposuction alone is unlikely to be the answer.

Volume loss or tissue descent

Fillers and fat or a lift procedure

A face that has lost volume looks hollow. A face whose tissues have descended looks heavy along the jaw and neck. They are different problems and they respond to different things.

Volume loss is treated by adding volume, with fat transfer or non-surgical fillers. Descent is treated by repositioning tissue, which is what a facelift or neck lift does. Many people have some of both, and the plan depends on the proportions in your face.

Breast size or breast position

Implants or a breast lift

An implant makes the breast larger. It does not raise the breast or the nipple, and using a larger implant to chase a lift usually produces a heavy result that descends again.

A breast lift repositions without adding volume. Where someone wants both fullness and position changed, the two are combined in one operation. The surgeon decides which applies after examining you, because the answer depends on where the nipple sits relative to the fold beneath the breast.

Abdominal fat or muscle separation

Liposuction or a tummy tuck

A stomach that stays rounded after weight loss or pregnancy is often not a fat problem. The abdominal muscles can separate down the midline, which no amount of exercise or liposuction closes.

A tummy tuck repairs that separation and removes the skin excess at the same time. If the muscles are intact and the skin is good, liposuction may be enough. This is one of the clearest cases where the right operation cannot be chosen from a photograph.

Plastic surgery cost in Turkey

There is no single price for plastic surgery, in Turkey or anywhere else. What follows is the starting price for each named operation, what a package normally covers, and how those figures sit against published UK prices for the same operations.

Starting prices by procedure

These are the lowest prices published by the Turkish clinics listed on this page for each named procedure. Individual clinics quote above them, sometimes well above, and the quote you receive depends on the complexity of your case, the surgeon, the hospital and how long you are in theatre. Turkish clinics quote and invoice in euro, so euro is the figure to hold a quote against.

These are clinic-submitted list prices read from live Flymedi listings, not transacted prices. Treat them as a starting point and confirm the current figure on the clinic card before you compare two quotes.

Comparing Turkey with the UK

The UK column below uses the published NHS guide prices for private cosmetic surgery in Britain, which is the most widely used independent reference for what these operations cost at home. 4 They are estimates, and NHS states each range depends on the clinic, the surgeon and how extensive the operation is. Put side by side, the two columns show the size of the gap; they are not a like-for-like quote, and the note underneath explains why.

What a Turkish package usually covers

Confirm in writing before you book

  • Whether garments, drains and dressings for the whole recovery are covered
  • Who pays if a revision is needed, and on what terms
  • Who manages a complication once you are home

Package contents differ between clinics, and nothing on this list is standard across Turkey. Treat the right-hand column as questions to ask, not as a list of exclusions.

Why prices in Turkey are lower

The gap comes from structural cost differences rather than from a shorter operation. Clinical staff costs, premises costs and the exchange rate all sit well below UK equivalents, and Istanbul has a dense cluster of clinics competing for the same international patients, which pushes package prices down further. High volume also lets a clinic run several theatres and spread its fixed costs across more operations.

There is a version of the same economics worth watching. If a quote sits far below the range in the table above, the saving is coming from somewhere: less surgeon time per patient, more operations per day, or a scope of care that stops at the airport. That is a reason to ask what is included and who is operating, which is exactly what the verification section covers.

What the price never includes

Budget separately for flights, a companion's flights and room, travel insurance that actually covers elective surgery abroad, which most standard policies do not, and the cost of a return trip if one is needed. Those four items are what turn a headline saving into a smaller one, and none of them appears in a clinic quote.

Ask before you pay a deposit

  • Who is the operating surgeon, and can I see their TSPRAS listing?
  • Where will the operation take place, and how many beds does it have?
  • Will an anaesthetist be present throughout?
  • How many nights in hospital, and how many in the hotel?
  • What would change this quote after you examine me?
  • How soon after surgery can I fly, for this procedure?
  • What happens, and who pays, if I need a revision?
  • Who do I contact from home if something goes wrong at 2am?

How to check a Turkish plastic surgeon before you book

People search for the best plastic surgery clinic in Turkey, but there is no single answer to that, because the surgeon who is right for a rhinoplasty is often not the one you want for body contouring. What there is, is a set of checks you can make yourself. These come from the joint guidance published by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, the two bodies that see the results at both ends. 3

  1. Check the surgeon is a TSPRAS member. The Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons publishes a searchable member directory. The joint BAAPS and TSPRAS guidance is explicit that any Turkish surgeon you see should be a member and listed there. Search the name yourself rather than accepting a screenshot. 3 6
  2. Ask for the Turkish board certification. Surgeons should hold Turkish board certification in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery and be able to produce it on request. Membership of the European Board, EBOPRAS, is a further mark in its favour but is not a substitute. 3
  3. Ask how long they have practised, and where. The joint guidance suggests at least five years in plastic and aesthetic surgery, and at least three years at the clinic where you would be treated. A surgeon who has just arrived at a clinic is harder to hold to account afterwards. 3
  4. Check they are not working outside their specialty. Confirm that the person operating is a plastic surgeon rather than a doctor from another specialty offering aesthetic work, and that the specific procedure you want is one they perform regularly. Years in medicine is not the same as years performing your operation. 3
  5. Check the facility, not just the surgeon. Surgery should take place in a fully recognised hospital, which the joint guidance suggests in Turkey means one with at least 30 beds. Ask where you will actually be operated on, because it is not always the address on the website. 3
  6. Check the Ministry of Health authorisation. Providers treating international patients in Turkey require health tourism authorisation, and the Ministry of Health publishes the list of authorised hospitals, medical centres and practices. 2
  7. Insist on a written consent process before you travel. A comprehensive consent form completed ahead of travel is compulsory in Turkey. NHS guidance for anyone having surgery abroad is that you should have two consultations with the surgeon who will treat you before any operation, which in the UK gives a cooling-off period of about two weeks. 1 3
  8. Get the aftercare plan in writing, with a name on it. The joint guidance says your surgeon should offer you an aftercare plan, and that you should know their name and how to reach them if you have a complication. Ask specifically what happens if the complication appears three weeks later, at home. 3
  9. Ask to see their results, for your case. NHS advice is that a surgeon should be able to show before and after photographs of their own work. Ask for cases like yours, with the interval since surgery stated, and treat a gallery with no dates and no attribution as marketing rather than evidence. 1
  10. Check they speak a language you understand. NHS guidance names this explicitly: the surgeon has to be able to explain the procedure to you and understand your questions. An interpreter who works for the clinic is not the same as talking to your surgeon directly. 1

Getting credentials the right way round

These words are not interchangeable, and marketing pages often blur them.

TSPRASA professional society for plastic surgeons. Membership sits with the surgeon, and the joint guidance treats it as the baseline check.
TSAPSA separate Turkish aesthetic plastic surgery society. Again a membership held by people, not a facility accreditation.
EBOPRASA European board qualification held by the surgeon. Desirable, and not a replacement for Turkish board certification.
JCIAn accreditation held by a hospital or clinic. It says nothing about any individual surgeon's training.
ISO 9001A quality management standard held by an organisation. It is not a clinical outcomes measure.
Health tourism authorisationA Turkish Ministry of Health permission held by the provider, required to treat international patients. 2

Board certified means different things in different countries, and internationally trained is not a regulated credential anywhere. Ask which board, in which country, in which specialty.

Reading reviews of plastic surgery in Turkey

Reviews are strong evidence about logistics, communication, cleanliness and how a clinic behaves when something goes wrong. They are weaker evidence about surgical quality, because most are written within a few weeks of surgery and the final result of most of these operations is not visible for months. Swelling settles over three to six months, and scars keep maturing for a year or more.

Give more weight to reviews posted a year or more after surgery, to reviewers who name the procedure they had, and to how a clinic responds to its negative reviews rather than to the average score. Read the score and the review count together: a perfect rating from two patients tells you almost nothing.

What a plastic surgery trip to Turkey involves

The length of the trip is set by the operation, not by the destination. A rhinoplasty and a tummy tuck are not the same journey.

Before you travel 2 to 6 weeks ahead

  • Remote review from photographs and your medical history, which indicates whether you are broadly a candidate
  • Medical history, current medication, previous operations and any implants already in place
  • Two consultations with the operating surgeon before surgery is agreed 1
  • Written consent form completed ahead of travel, which is compulsory in Turkey 3
  • Stopping smoking and nicotine, which most surgeons require for a period before and after surgery
  • Checking whether your travel insurance covers elective surgery abroad, because most policies do not 1

In Turkey procedure dependent

  • In-person examination and final consent, which is where the plan can still change
  • Pre-operative blood tests and anaesthetic assessment
  • Surgery, with hospital nights where the procedure requires them
  • Hotel recovery, with a coordinator or nurse contact
  • Drain removal, dressing changes and garment fitting where relevant
  • A post-operative review and a fitness to fly assessment before departure

How soon you can fly home

This is the part most commonly got wrong when people book a return flight before they book the surgery. Flying soon after an operation raises the risk of a blood clot, and the recommended interval depends on what was done. NHS guidance for people having cosmetic surgery abroad is set out below. 1

Book a flexible return, or build in a spare night or two. These are general intervals: your surgeon signs off whether you are fit to fly, and a combined operation is judged on its most demanding component rather than its least.

After you fly home

This is the stretch that cosmetic tourism marketing tends to skip, and it is the stretch where problems surface. A rapid review published in BMJ Open examined 655 patients treated by the NHS between 2011 and 2024 for complications after surgery abroad. Turkey was the most common destination, at 61% of cases where the destination was recorded, infection and wound breakdown were the complications most often reported after cosmetic surgery, and treatment cost the NHS between £1,058 and £19,549 per patient in the studies that reported costs. 7

The authors are clear that the underlying data are incomplete, so those figures describe the patients who reached an NHS hospital rather than the risk of travelling. That is not an argument against surgery in Turkey. It is an argument for choosing a clinic that plans for the weeks after you leave, and for taking your paperwork home with you.

Risks, recovery and combining procedures

These are real operations under real anaesthetic. Recovery and risk are set by the procedure and by you, not by the country you have it in.

Recovery is procedure-specific

Any page that publishes one recovery timeline for plastic surgery is describing nothing in particular. Swelling and bruising after facial surgery follow a different curve from swelling after abdominal surgery. Compression garments matter after liposuction and a tummy tuck and are irrelevant after a rhinoplasty. Drains are used in some operations and not in others. Time off work depends on the operation, on how physical your job is, and on how you personally heal.

What is broadly true across this group of operations: swelling usually peaks in the first two to three days, most people are through the acute phase within two weeks, exercise is restricted for several weeks, and the final result of most body and facial procedures is not settled for somewhere between three and twelve months while swelling resolves and scars mature. Your surgeon gives you the version that applies to your operation, and that version is the one to follow.

Risks reported across plastic surgery

Individual risk depends on the procedure, your health, your anatomy, your medication and your surgeon's planning. Every item below carries a different likelihood for a rhinoplasty than for a tummy tuck.

Brazilian butt lift is not in the same risk category as the rest

Buttock fat transfer deserves separating out rather than listing alongside the others. The NHS states plainly that this operation has the highest death rate of any cosmetic procedure, because injected fat can enter a blood vessel and block a vessel in the lungs. It also notes that roughly half the injected fat may not survive, so a second procedure is sometimes needed to reach the intended result. 4

If you are considering it, that specific risk, how the surgeon plans to reduce it, and what monitoring is in place afterwards are the questions to put at your consultation, before price comes into it at all.

Combining procedures in one trip

Combining operations is genuinely attractive when you are travelling: one anaesthetic, one recovery, one set of flights. It also means longer in theatre, more blood loss, a longer anaesthetic, a bigger total wound burden and a harder recovery, and those things do not add up in a straight line. A mommy makeover is a real operation, not a shopping basket.

How much can safely be done in one sitting depends on your health, your BMI, the total operating time and the specific combination, and it is a judgement the operating surgeon makes at your consultation. A clinic that agrees to any combination you propose, before examining you, is not doing you a favour. Where a combination is too much for one trip, staging it across two is the safer plan even though it costs more in flights.

When to get urgent help

Contact the treating clinic and seek medical assessment promptly, wherever you are, if you have:

  • • Pain that worsens after the first few days rather than easing
  • • Fever, spreading redness, increasing swelling, or discharge from a wound
  • • A wound that opens
  • • Bleeding that does not settle with pressure, or rapid one-sided swelling
  • • A hot, swollen, painful calf, which can be a blood clot
  • • Chest pain, breathlessness or coughing blood, which needs emergency care immediately
  • • Skin that turns dusky, dark or numb over an operated area

If you are already home, go to your GP, an urgent care service or an emergency department rather than waiting for a clinic in another country to reply. Take your operation note and implant details with you.
