What's a Sinus Lift Surgery?

A sinus lift procedure is typically used in the case of being insufficient bone height or significant bone deficit for the placement of dental implants. Raising the maxillary sinus floor or sinus lift, also called a sinus graft, is a surgical procedure that involves raising the lower Schneiderian membrane that lines the maxillary sinus.

With the sinus membrane raised, it is then possible to perform a sinus lift and bone graft in the maxillary sinus vertically and horizontally to place an implant simultaneously or subsequently, reaching certain primary stability. The main advantage of this technique is that it allows the dental sinus lift surgeon to place the dental implants in a correct position, with an axis that will allow a good fit of the prosthesis on the implants.

Who Can Have Sinus Lift Surgery?

Healthy patients whose jawbone density is insufficient to perform dental implant procedures.

Sinus Lift Treatment Duration

Sinus Lift surgery takes 90 to 120 minutes.

Sinus Lift Side Effects & Risks

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Perforation of the sinus membrane
  • Graft resorption
  • Loss of the graft or implants

Sinus Lift Recovery Time

The sinus lift procedure needs a minimum of 3 days of rest.

Sinus Lift Success Rate

Sinus Lift surgery has a success rate of 95%.

Sinus Lift Alternative Treatments

  • Angulated implants
  • Short implants

How Does It Work?

One of the most preferred implant surgery techniques that allow the placement of dental implants is the elevation of the maxillary sinus, which is called a sinus lift. This procedure is used when there is not sufficient bone height at the level of the upper jaw to be able to place a dental implant.

A sinus lift is a surgery during which bone is added to the posterior area of the upper maxilla at the level of the molars and premolars. This technique then allows implants to be placed where there were not enough bones before.

Although there are various techniques to perform sinus lift, typically synthetic bone mixed with autologous bone is added between the maxilla and the sinus membrane. This membrane is raised, and space is soon filled with regenerated bone which will serve as the basis for future dental implants.

What Does a Sinus Lift Surgery Involve?

1.       Consultation for Sinus Lift

After you submit your request for information, you will take an online consultation to make sure that you are a suitable candidate for sinus lift surgery. During this consultation, your complaints and story will be learned in detail and you will be asked if you have had any current health conditions or any surgery that you have experienced before.

And the imaging results or dentist’s report show a lack the sufficient jawbone density if any. Thus, we can better evaluate your case and prepare a customized treatment plan for you.

In light of all the information you provide, it will be decided whether you are eligible for this treatment and if you want to continue the process, the second phase will begin.

2.       Planning Your Trip and Choosing the Clinic

This is the stage where you choose one of the clinics and surgeons that we offer you according to your criteria and expectations, and also where we arrange the date and trip plan that suits you upon your preferred clinic/surgeon.

3.       Final Consultation with Your Surgeon

When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with your surgeon who performs your sinus lift surgery. Everything about your surgery will be discussed between you and your surgeon during this consultation.

The surgeon will ask you some questions to try to understand your expectations and goals better and also make you understand what you should expect from your treatment and the potential risks or complications of the procedure. You will also decide together the individualized surgical and recovery plan that can be followed, especially during the first 24 to 48 hours after the surgery.

At this stage, it is very important to find the answers to all the questions you have in mind. The surgeon will explain the whole process clearly and try to simulate it as much as possible, in the order for you to feel comfortable and well-prepared.

4.       Medical Examinations

Before the surgery begins, your surgeon will conduct physical and blood tests to make sure that you are in acceptable health status for the surgery. Also, before surgery, a radiological examination of the patient applying for a sinus lift must be carried out.

Every patient is required to undergo medical tests to ensure that nothing can hinder the success of the surgery and if any risk is obtained, surgeons try to eliminate them first.

5.       Surgery

First, a panoramic examination must be carried out, supplemented by a CBCT examination (Cone Beam) to measure the height and width of the sinus cavity and to detect any pathologies at this level.

Once the examination has been carried out and the operation validated, the Schneiderian membrane is lifted. The space created between the membrane and the basal sinus floor is then filled with bone shavings derived from autologous bone or exogenous bone, which can be of human origin, or with synthetic bone substitutes.

In the months that follow, this graft will decompose, resorb, and be replaced by newly formed bone, which will lead to bone thickening of the sinus floor.

What Should I Expect from Sinus Lift?

  • You should avoid the creation of negative pressure on the surgical area by suction, for example like that which occurs when drinking through a straw.
  • If you need to sneeze and you can't avoid it, you will need to do it with your mouth open to relieve the pressure.
  • The swelling of the area is very common but less than in other implantology procedures.
  • You will take antibiotic medication after the procedure to prevent any post-operative infections
  • You should avoid bending your head.
  • Sleep in a semi-incorporated, pressurized position with gauze in the wound for 1 hour after the sinus lift surgery to stop the blood.
  • If you feel blood coming out of your nose you can dry it with gauze, but you shouldn't blow your nose
  • The use of systemic decongestants is also considered useful to help reopen a blocked maxillary sinus and to facilitate drainage of the maxillary sinus.
  • If there is a blockage of the sinus with small particles of the grafted bone or edema, it could quickly lead to infection with common pathogens. To help prevent this complication is important to reduce inflammation for this it is recommended that you take anti-inflammatory medication as directed.

Things You Should Consider Before Sinus Lift Surgery

  • You should get all the lab testing and see your surgeon make him/her evaluate your current health status
  • Your surgeon may prescribe you a certain medication or may adjust your current medications
  • You should stop smoking
  • Avoiding taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements is also important because it can increase bleeding in the whole process of a sinus lift.

FAQ

Is Sinus Lift Procedure Painful?

Although postoperative pain is rare, it can be experienced, to relieve this pain your doctor will prescribe you proper pain medication.

What Are the Contraindications Of Sinus Lift?

Contraindications are rare but they do exist. Like any surgery, they are linked to the general condition of the patient, in particular, certain serious illnesses (acute heart disease, valve disease, diabetes, renal failure, respiratory failure, immunosuppression, etc.), certain allergies, or smoking.

It can also be sinus pathologies. An ENT examination is often requested before performing a sinus lift to ensure that the sinus is healthy and free from any pathology (chronic sinusitis, polyp, tumor, neoplasia, etc.).

When Can I Get My Dental Implant After Sinus Lift?

Depending on the situation, the implants can be placed simultaneously with the bone graft, or later. It is possible to place implants at the same time as a sinus lift operation or it may be necessary to wait for the bone tissue to harden. In about six months, bone tissue reaches sufficient stiffness and dental implants can be placed.

I had a wonderful experience booking my dental work with Flymedi. I needed a fair amount of work done and was required to visit twice but luckily the clinic was so hygienic and professional that it was a no-brainer to return. The dentist was great, and I knew exactly what was going to happen in each session.

I absolutely love the way my teeth look now, and I’m so happy I decided to go through with it as it was two trips to Turkey but totally worth it! I had to get a lot of work done actually as my teeth weren’t in the best shape, so I was quite scared, but the clinic was so clean and hygienic and the staff super professional.

The dentist was great, he explained the procedure very clearly and I knew exactly what was going to happen in each session. The procedure itself was totally painless which was a first for me having had bad experiences with dentists in the past so that was really encouraging. I would highly recommend Flymedi's services as they exceeded my expectations (:

I was considering several different options, however Abud was by far the most committed and helpful of all the agents I'd been in discussions with. Everything was organised for me and I was guided throughout and if I was feeling apprehensive about anything or had any questions Abud was always on hand to answer my questions and give reassurances. I'm so happy with the results of my operation and I was left overwhelmed by how friendly and supportive everyone was throughout. If you're considering using flymedi then I can honestly say you'll be delighted with the service both before during and after your surgery.
