Tummy tuck in Thailand

A tummy tuck in Thailand is sold as a package in Thai baht by hospitals in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, and the price moves with the type of abdominoplasty: a mini tummy tuck below the navel, a full tummy tuck with repair of the separated abdominal muscles, an extended tummy tuck that carries the incision round the hips, or a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck with a vertical scar for skin left by major weight loss. The package covers the surgeon, the anaesthetist, the theatre, the nights in hospital, the drains and the check-ups until you are cleared to fly, and the stay is closer to two weeks than one.

A tummy tuck removes loose skin and fat from the lower abdomen and tightens the muscle wall beneath it; it is not a weight-loss operation, it leaves a long scar, and it is a bigger undertaking than liposuction, with a longer recovery and a higher risk of a clot on the flight home. This page explains what decides the price, what a package covers, how the types differ, how to check a surgeon and a hospital, what the two weeks in Thailand look like, when the operation may be funded at home instead, and what aftercare in Australia, New Zealand or the United Kingdom means, so the prices in the clinic listing below can be read properly.

  • Compare the type of tummy tuck, not just the price

Every clinic on this page shows its current price with a note of what it includes. A mini tummy tuck and an extended tummy tuck with muscle repair and liposuction are different operations with different scars and different stays.
  • About two weeks in Thailand

Drains come out, the wound is checked and the surgeon clears the flight; most patients fly in the second week, in a binder, walking every hour.
  • Board, licence, accreditation

Thai Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for the surgeon, a Ministry of Public Health licence for the hospital, and hospital accreditation you can verify.
  • Rule out the funded route first

After major weight loss, or for a separated muscle wall after pregnancy, the operation is sometimes funded at home under strict criteria. Ask before you pay in Thailand.

Why people fly to Thailand for a tummy tuck, and what to weigh

Thai plastic surgery hospitals do a great many tummy tucks, most of them for patients from Australia and New Zealand who have finished having children or lost a lot of weight and want the skin, the fat and the muscle wall dealt with in one operation, often with liposuction of the flanks in the same session. The hospitals have theatres and wards set up for long operations under general anaesthesia, surgeons who close a great deal of abdominal skin every week, and international departments used to patients who arrive with photographs and a return flight booked. The package price in baht is known before you travel.

The other side of the ledger is specific to this operation. A tummy tuck is several hours under anaesthesia, two or three nights in hospital, drains, a binder, a hip-to-hip scar that takes a year to settle and a recovery in which you walk bent forward for a week or more. The complications that matter, a seroma, a wound that opens, a section of skin that does not survive, and above all a clot in the leg or the lung, tend to show in the weeks after surgery, which is exactly when a Thailand patient is boarding a long flight home. Thailand is a reasonable choice for a healthy, non-smoking patient at a stable weight who can stay two weeks and has help at home; it is a poor one for anyone who is still losing weight, still smoking, or hoping the operation will do the work of a diet.

The cost of a tummy tuck in Thailand

The price is a package in Thai baht, and the type of abdominoplasty is the biggest thing inside it. Each clinic on this page shows its current price with a note of what it covers, and that is the figure to compare, because a quote for a mini tummy tuck and a quote for an extended tummy tuck with muscle repair, liposuction and three nights in hospital are not the same operation.

  • The type. A mini tummy tuck is a shorter operation with a shorter scar and no muscle repair; a full tummy tuck adds the muscle repair and moves the navel; an extended tummy tuck carries the incision round the hips to the back; a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck adds a vertical scar to remove skin left by major weight loss. Each step up adds theatre time and price.
  • Muscle repair. Stitching the separated rectus muscles back together, the diastasis repair, adds time, adds to the pain afterwards and adds to the fee; it is the part that flattens a bulge no exercise has shifted.
  • Liposuction in the same session. Flanks, back or thighs treated at the same time are priced per area on top of the tummy tuck, and lengthen the operation.
  • Nights in hospital. Two or three nights are usual for a full or extended tummy tuck and are inside most packages; a mini tummy tuck may be one night.
  • The surgeon and the hospital. A surgeon who does body contouring after major weight loss every week charges more than a general list, and a large Bangkok hospital with an international department charges more than a clinic; Phuket often sits between.
  • Primary or revision. Correcting a previous tummy tuck, a high scar, a misplaced navel or dog-ears at the ends of the scar, is slower and priced accordingly.

What is included in the cost

A Thai tummy tuck package normally covers everything that happens inside the hospital, from the pre-operative tests to the last wound check before you fly, plus the binder. What it rarely covers is anything that happens after you land at home. Get the inclusions in writing before you pay a deposit, and get the type of tummy tuck written on the same page.

  • Usually included. Consultation and marking, blood tests and an electrocardiogram, the surgeon's and the anaesthetist's fees, the theatre, two or three nights in hospital, drains and their removal, medication including clot prevention in hospital, a binder, dressings and the check-ups until you are cleared to fly.
  • Sometimes included. A second binder, hotel nights near the hospital, transfers, a nurse visit at the hotel and compression stockings for the flight.
  • Rarely included. Flights, travel insurance, an extended stay if a seroma needs draining or a wound is slow, treatment of complications after you return, and revision surgery with or without a return flight.
  • What the deposit buys. A date and a surgeon. Ask whether it is refundable if the examination in Thailand changes the type of tummy tuck or the price.

Instalment options that cover the whole trip are described on the payment plans page. The clinic listing on this page shows each hospital's current price with a note of what it includes, and that note is what to compare, not the number above it.

Price comparison: a tummy tuck at home and in Thailand

The comparison most people want is not a table with two numbers, because the numbers do not cover the same things. A quote at home usually lists the surgeon, the anaesthetist and the hospital separately, with follow-up in the same rooms for as long as it takes and the complication managed by the person who operated. A Thai quote is a package in baht that covers the hospital side and stops when the plane takes off. And for some patients there is a third column: after significant weight loss, or for a separated muscle wall after pregnancy, abdominoplasty is sometimes funded under strict criteria, through Medicare items in Australia, through an exceptional funding request to the NHS in the United Kingdom, or through public prioritisation in New Zealand. That route has to be ruled out before Thailand makes sense.

To compare honestly, add to the Thai price the flights, two weeks of hotel, the cost of a companion, travel insurance that does not cover the operation itself, and a reserve for aftercare at home, then ask what a revision would cost, because a seroma, a slow wound or dog-ears at the ends of the scar are the things that bring tummy tuck patients back to a surgeon. The technique is the same in both places; what differs is who looks at the wound in week three, and how far away that person is.

What a tummy tuck is, and how mini, full, extended and fleur-de-lis differ

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes the loose skin and fat between the navel and the pubic line through a horizontal incision low on the abdomen, tightens the separated abdominal muscles with sutures if they need it, and brings the navel out through a new opening in the skin above. It is an operation for skin and muscle, which is why it suits people after pregnancy or major weight loss and does not suit people whose problem is fat alone, for whom liposuction is the operation, or people who are overweight, for whom it removes skin and leaves the weight.

The types differ by how much skin is removed and where the scar runs. The right one is decided by the amount of loose skin, whether it sits below the navel only or above it too, whether it wraps round the hips, and whether the muscles have separated. A surgeon who names the type before seeing you in person has guessed from photographs; the examination on arrival is where it is confirmed.

  • Mini tummy tuck. A short scar low on the abdomen, skin removed below the navel only, no muscle repair and the navel left where it is. For a small fold of skin after pregnancy with muscles that have not separated. Shorter surgery, shorter stay.
  • Full tummy tuck. A hip-to-hip scar, skin removed from navel to pubic line, repair of the separated muscles and a new navel opening. The standard operation after pregnancy and after moderate weight loss.
  • Extended tummy tuck. The incision continues round the hips towards the back to take loose skin from the flanks as well. For skin that hangs at the sides after significant weight loss; a longer operation with a longer scar.
  • Fleur-de-lis tummy tuck. A vertical scar up the midline in addition to the horizontal one, to remove skin above the navel as well as below. For an apron of skin after major weight loss, when a horizontal scar alone would leave the upper abdomen loose.
  • Tummy tuck with liposuction. Liposuction of the flanks, back or thighs in the same session, which shapes the waist but lengthens surgery and raises the clot risk; the combination is common in Thailand and needs a surgeon who does it routinely.
  • Body lift and belt lipectomy. A circumferential operation for skin that hangs all the way round after massive weight loss, which is a different operation with its own page.

The type pages describe each operation in detail: mini tummy tuck, full tummy tuck, extended tummy tuck and fleur-de-lis tummy tuck. Fat without loose skin belongs on the liposuction in Thailand page, skin that hangs all the way round on the body lift and belt lipectomy pages, skin removal after weight loss more generally on the skin removal surgery page, and a previous tummy tuck that needs correcting on the tummy tuck revision page.

How to check a surgeon and a hospital in Thailand

Thailand licenses doctors and facilities separately. The surgeon should hold registration with the Medical Council of Thailand and the specialist qualification of the Thai Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, awarded through the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand; membership of the Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Thailand or the Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons of Thailand is a further sign of training in the specialty. A tummy tuck is not an operation for a doctor without that training, and it is worth asking how many abdominoplasties after major weight loss the surgeon does, because that is where the judgement lies.

The hospital needs a Ministry of Public Health licence for inpatient surgery under general anaesthesia, with a named anaesthetist, a recovery unit and a ward, and it needs a written protocol for preventing clots, which for a long abdominal operation means calf compression during surgery, early walking and often an injection afterwards. Private hospitals in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya commonly hold Hospital Accreditation from the Healthcare Accreditation Institute of Thailand, and several also hold accreditation from Joint Commission International. The question people type into search, which hospital in Thailand is right for a tummy tuck, is answered by these checks rather than by a ranking.

  • Ask for the surgeon's full name and licence number and check both against the Medical Council of Thailand register before paying anything.
  • Ask what the hospital does to prevent clots, in writing: compression during surgery, walking on the first day, whether an anticoagulant injection is given and for how long, and what they advise for the flight.
  • Ask for healed photographs at six months or a year, front and side, of patients with your amount of loose skin, and look at the height of the scar and the shape of the navel rather than the flatness.
  • Ask who gives the anaesthetic and how many nights you stay. A named anaesthetist and two or three nights on a ward for a full or extended tummy tuck; a hospital that discharges the next day is cutting the wrong corner.
  • Ask about weight and smoking limits. Reputable hospitals defer patients above a certain body mass index, ask for a stable weight for months, and refuse smokers who have not stopped, because nicotine is the main reason wound edges die.
  • Ask what happens if a seroma forms or the wound opens, who treats it, what it costs, and whether the fee is waived for a revision.

Bangkok, Phuket or Pattaya

Bangkok has the large private hospitals with international departments and the biggest concentration of surgeons with overseas fellowships in body contouring, which matters for extended and fleur-de-lis operations after massive weight loss; it has direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Auckland and London. Phuket has a dedicated plastic surgery hospital and general hospitals used to Australian patients. Pattaya has a large hospital experienced with international patients, and Chiang Mai a handful of serious surgeons.

Wherever you operate, the recovery is not a beach holiday. You walk bent at the hips for a week or more, wear a binder day and night in the heat, manage drains for the first days, and stay out of the sea and the pool until the wound is closed. Book the excursions for the days before surgery, and choose a hotel near the hospital with a lift and a bath you can step into.

How the tummy tuck procedure works, step by step

  1. Online consultation with photographs

Front, both sides and back, standing, plus a photograph bending forward to show how much skin hangs, with height, weight, weight history, pregnancies and any hernia. The surgeon should reply with a type of tummy tuck, whether muscle repair is needed, whether liposuction is advised, the number of nights and the reasoning, not only a price.
  2. Arrival and examination

Two or three days before surgery: examination standing and lying down, a check for muscle separation and hernia, marking, blood tests, the anaesthetic interview and a frank word about the scar. This is where the type of tummy tuck and the price are confirmed.
  3. The operation

General anaesthesia, several hours depending on the type. The skin is lifted, the muscles are repaired, the excess is removed, the navel is brought out through a new opening, drains are placed and the binder goes on in theatre. You wake in a bent position and stay two or three nights.
  4. The first days

Drains, a binder, walking bent forward from the first day, pain that is controlled with medication and worst when the muscles have been repaired. Calf compression and clot-prevention injections in hospital. You move to a hotel near the hospital once the drains are out or nearly out.
  5. Check-ups and clearance to fly

Drains removed, the wound checked, fluid collections looked for, stitches or glue reviewed. Most patients are cleared to fly in the second week, in the binder and compression stockings. A seroma or a slow wound means staying longer, which is why the return flight should be changeable.
  6. At home and the long tail

Standing upright over the second and third weeks, desk work from the third or fourth week, lifting and exercise later. Swelling settles over months, the scar is red for a year before it fades, and numbness above the scar takes months to return. Send photographs at the agreed points and see a doctor the same day for fever, spreading redness, a wound that opens, a swelling that grows, or pain or swelling in a calf.

Tummy tuck recovery timeline in Thailand

  • The first week. In hospital and then the hotel, drains, a binder, walking bent forward, pain controlled with medication, no lifting. Sleeping with pillows under the knees.
  • The second week. Drains out, standing straighter each day, the wound checked and the flight cleared. Short walks, no driving, no lifting a child or a suitcase.
  • Weeks three to six. Upright, desk work, the binder still on, swelling and a firm ridge above the scar. Light exercise with the surgeon's agreement towards the end of this period.
  • Months two to six. Exercise and lifting return, the swelling settles and the shape appears, numbness above the scar starts to come back.
  • Six months to a year. The scar fades from red to pale, the final shape is judged and a revision, if one is needed, is planned after this and not before.

Flying home and aftercare in Australia, New Zealand or the UK

The flight itself is rarely the problem once you are cleared; the problems are the ones that declare themselves later. A seroma can form in the weeks after surgery, a wound can open at the ends of the scar after you land, a clot can form in the days around a long flight, and the shape is not judged until the swelling has gone. An emergency, an infection, a clot or a fluid collection is treated at home under Medicare, the NHS or the public system in New Zealand, as it would be for any patient. What nobody funds is the correction of a cosmetic result, and routine follow-up of an operation done abroad is not something a public clinic owes you; expect to pay a private surgeon for wound reviews, and expect some to decline.

Decide before you leave which doctor will see you after you land: a plastic surgeon for the wound and the shape, a general practitioner for fever, infection or calf pain. Take the operation report in English, naming the type of tummy tuck, whether the muscles were repaired, whether liposuction was done and what clot prevention was given. If you are in the group who might qualify for funded surgery at home, get that answer before you book, not after.

Who should not have a tummy tuck in Thailand

  • Anyone hoping it will help them lose weight. It removes skin; reputable hospitals defer patients above a certain body mass index and ask for a stable weight for months first.
  • Anyone still losing weight, planning another pregnancy or still smoking, because the result stretches, the muscle repair fails, or the wound edges die.
  • Anyone who qualifies for funded surgery at home and has not asked. After major weight loss or for a separated muscle wall after pregnancy, ask about the funded route before paying in Thailand.
  • Anyone who cannot stay about two weeks, or who has no help at home for the first weeks with lifting, children and shopping.
  • Anyone with a clotting disorder, previous thrombosis, anticoagulants that cannot be paused, or poorly controlled diabetes, without a medical assessment first.
  • Anyone whose problem is fat rather than skin, for whom liposuction is the operation, or whose skin hangs all the way round, for whom a body lift is.

The next steps if you plan to have a tummy tuck in Thailand

  1. Reach a stable weight, stop smoking and rule out the funded route at home before you spend anything.
  2. Compare the clinics on this page by what the price includes and which type of tummy tuck it is for, and shortlist two or three.
  3. Send each the same photographs and history and judge the replies by whether they name a type, a view on muscle repair, the number of nights, a surgeon and a written inclusions list.
  4. Check the surgeon and the hospital against the Medical Council of Thailand register and the accreditation lists before paying a deposit, and ask for the clot-prevention protocol in writing.
  5. Book changeable flights for about two weeks, a companion for the first days, a hotel near the hospital with a lift, and stop smoking and blood-thinning medication as instructed.
  6. Take the operation report home and book the first wound review at home before you take off.

If you are weighing Thailand against Turkey, the tummy tuck in Turkey page describes a market built for European patients with short flights. The tummy tuck abroad page compares countries, and the plastic surgery in Thailand section lists the operations commonly combined with a tummy tuck, including a breast lift and a Brazilian butt lift.

After losing a lot of weight, I decided to get a Tummy Tuck at BKFL Clinic. From the first video consultation, the doctor explained everything in detail and answered all my concerns. The results are better than I expected, and the scar is healing beautifully. Thailand offers excellent service without the crazy UK prices, which made it even more worth it. The nurses were so attentive, always smiling and making sure I was comfortable. Recovery was smoother than I imagined!

Frequently asked questions

Answers from the medical content team, reviewed by the medical reviewer named on this page.

How much is a tummy tuck in Thailand?
It is a package in Thai baht, and the type of abdominoplasty is the biggest thing inside it: a mini tummy tuck, a full tummy tuck with muscle repair, an extended tummy tuck or a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck each add theatre time, nights and price, and liposuction in the same session is added per area. Every clinic on this page shows its current price with a note of what it includes. Add flights, two weeks of hotel, insurance and a reserve for aftercare at home.
What is included in tummy tuck packages in Thailand?
Usually the consultation, tests, the surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees, the theatre, two or three nights in hospital, drains, medication and clot prevention in hospital, a binder and the check-ups until you are cleared to fly. Sometimes hotel nights, transfers and a nurse visit. Rarely flights, insurance, an extended stay, treatment after you return or a revision. Ask for the list in writing.
Is a tummy tuck in Thailand safe?
Licensed Thai hospitals are inspected against published standards, but safety depends on the surgeon, the anaesthetist, the hospital's clot-prevention protocol and your own fitness. Check Medical Council registration and the Thai Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery qualification, check the hospital's licence and accreditation, ask what is done to prevent clots, stay the full two weeks, and do not go while still smoking or still losing weight.
How long do I need to stay in Thailand for a tummy tuck?
About two weeks: two or three days before surgery for the examination, two or three nights in hospital, then days at a hotel near the hospital while the drains come out and the wound is checked, with clearance to fly usually in the second week. A seroma or a slow wound means staying longer, so book a changeable return flight.
What is the difference between a mini and a full tummy tuck?
A mini tummy tuck removes a small fold of skin below the navel through a short scar, without muscle repair and with the navel left in place; it suits a small amount of loose skin with intact muscles. A full tummy tuck removes skin from navel to pubic line through a hip-to-hip scar, repairs separated muscles and makes a new navel opening. Many people who ask for a mini need a full.
What is an extended tummy tuck?
A full tummy tuck whose incision continues round the hips towards the back, so that loose skin at the flanks is removed as well. It is the usual choice after significant weight loss when skin hangs at the sides, and it is a longer operation with a longer scar and a longer recovery.
What is a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck with a vertical scar up the midline in addition to the horizontal one, so that excess skin above the navel can be removed as well as below. It is used after major weight loss when a horizontal scar alone would leave the upper abdomen loose, and the trade is a visible vertical scar for a flatter result.
Will I have a scar after a tummy tuck?
Yes, a permanent one from hip to hip, placed low enough to sit under underwear, plus a scar around the new navel and, for a fleur-de-lis, a vertical one. It is red and raised for months and fades over a year or more. The height and evenness of the scar are set by the surgeon; how it matures is set partly by your skin.
Is a tummy tuck a weight loss operation?
No. It removes loose skin and some fat and tightens the muscle wall; the weight removed is small and the operation is done at a stable weight, not to reach one. Reputable hospitals defer patients above a certain body mass index. Weight gain afterwards stretches the result.
Can I combine a tummy tuck with liposuction or breast surgery in Thailand?
A tummy tuck with liposuction of the flanks is common and shapes the waist, at the cost of a longer operation and a higher clot risk. Adding a breast lift or implants in the same session, what clinics call a mummy makeover, is done in Thailand but means a long anaesthetic and a harder recovery, and it suits fit patients with help at home more than anyone else.
Can a tummy tuck be funded at home instead?
Sometimes, under strict criteria. Australia has Medicare items for abdominoplasty after significant weight loss and for repair of a separated muscle wall after pregnancy, each with conditions on weight stability, symptoms and timing. The NHS funds it only exceptionally through an individual funding request, and New Zealand through public prioritisation. Ask before paying in Thailand.
When can I fly after a tummy tuck?
When the surgeon clears you, usually in the second week, after the drains are out and the wound has been checked. Fly in the binder and compression stockings, walk every hour, and ask whether to continue clot-prevention injections through the flight, because the days around a long flight are when clots form.
Will my tummy tuck results be permanent?
The skin removed does not come back and the muscle repair holds if weight stays stable and there is no further pregnancy. Weight gain, pregnancy and ageing loosen the result again, and the scar is permanent.
Can men have a tummy tuck in Thailand?
Yes. Men usually come after major weight loss, often for an extended or fleur-de-lis tummy tuck or a body lift, and the same checks on the surgeon, the hospital and clot prevention apply.
What if I need a revision after a tummy tuck in Thailand?
Wait until the swelling has settled and the scar has matured, which takes months, then send photographs to the surgeon. Dog-ears, a high scar or a navel that looks wrong are corrected by another operation, which means another trip or full price at home, and public healthcare does not cover it. Get in writing before booking what the hospital will cover.
