Moustache transplant in Turkey

Angle. Moustache hairs leave the skin at a very acute angle, almost flat against the lip, and they change direction across the upper lip. Placing them at a scalp-like angle is what makes a transplant look transplanted, and correcting it afterwards is far harder than doing it properly first.

This is a more demanding aesthetic job than the scalp, on a smaller canvas that people look at directly when you talk. Ask to see the surgeon's own moustache results, close up, not beard cases and not hairlines.

• Filling a patchy moustache

  The commonest reason. It suits people who already have some growth to blend into and whose pattern is stable rather than still developing.

• Covering a scar

  Including after cleft lip repair or an injury. Hair grows through scar tissue less reliably than through normal skin, so more than one session is often planned from the start.

• Building density and shape

  Reshaping the outline or thickening an existing moustache. Modest, and often the most natural looking result.

• Not yet

  Under the age at which facial hair is still filling in on its own, unstable expectations, or an active skin condition on the lip. Any of these is a reason to wait.

• The transplanted hairs fall out. Within the first weeks, and this is expected. The follicle stays; the visible hair is shed before it regrows.
• Then nothing happens for months. This is the phase people find hardest, and it is the reason judging the result early is a mistake.
• Growth comes in gradually and unevenly. Density builds over many months, and the final appearance is judged at the far end of that, not in the middle.
• It will need trimming. Scalp hair does not stop at moustache length. Expect to maintain it as you would head hair.
• A second session is common. Especially over scar tissue. Ask before you book whether the quote covers one session or the result.

• The graft count. A moustache needs far fewer grafts than a scalp case, and the number should be named rather than implied.
• Whether a scar is being covered. Scar tissue takes grafts less reliably, and the plan may include a second session.
• Who performs the steps. A surgeon making the incisions personally is priced differently from a technician-led service, and the difference is the point.
• Whether it is bundled with a beard case. Often quoted together. Ask for the moustache to be itemised.
• What the package covers. Nights, transfers, medication, follow-up, and whether a touch-up session is included.

• Ask how many moustache cases the surgeon does. Not hair transplants in general. This is a small, specific operation and the numbers are small.
• Ask about angle and direction in their own words. A surgeon who talks about the acute angle and the change of direction across the lip has done this. One who talks only about graft numbers has not.
• Ask what happens if growth is patchy. Whether a touch-up is included, and when it would be assessed.
• Ask about the donor area. Where the grafts come from, and how they avoid a visible thinned patch.
• Ask for your graft records. Count, donor site and design. Useful if you ever need more.
